When one melts silver one can lose as much as 5% of the weight in the smelting process and I can not be held responsible for weight lost after melting. I do not generally melt anything that is well made as it makes little sense to me. So any potential loss should be considered before purchasing my items. All my items are measured with a standard tape measure and are rounded off to the quarter inch. I attempt to be as accurate as possible. Carved from one piece of wood. Of course. As can be easily seen, there is a piece broken off, not present so not included, of the lower right hanging thing. There is also a section on the top back part that goes over the face which looks like it has some kind of wood filler, which I didn't notice until after I photographed it. NICE Vintage ANTIQUE Wood Carved NATIVE AFRICAN Tribal MASK; Ghana, Burkina Faso
Nice antique. Or vintage, wood carved African Mask in great older shape. There are no cracks or breaks in the wood. There may be a couple small rub marks where the paint has worn slightly. Also due to this piece being older, the paint job throughout has naturally aged, but it has aged nicely and equally throughout giving this piece nice character. Colors still look sharp for being older! Elongated wood on top of the mask which possibly be horns as there looks like there may be smaller ears on the sides. Also there is an animal. Looks like a bird or turtle, perched on top of the head between the horns. There are two objects protruding out from the cheeks which I am not sure what it represents. I spent lots of time trying to find what and where this mask is from. But I am coming up empty handed. Being that I bought this at an estate sale where ... morethe person collected African pieces, I am assuming that this is from Africa. And from the pictures I saw online I am guessing that this piece is either from Ghana, or maybe Burkina Faso, as they had somewhat similar masks. I could not find another one like this piece so maybe it is something rare. Excellent piece for just decor. Or for a collector, as it seems to be a one of a kind piece. The eyes that have seen Gelede have seen the ultimate spectacle” a Yoruba saying. In view of the spiritual power attributed to Yoruba women. Gelede headdresses commonly pay tribute to priestesses and female devotees of various gods. Most Gelede headresses have three short vertical scarification lines(pele) on the cheeks, or sometimes on the forehead of the human face. Traditionally, the Yoruba regarded such markings highly. The Yoruba people have three major festivals at which such headdresses are used: The Efe/Gelede but also the Egungun and the Epa/Elefon ceremonies. The western Yoruba people practise the Efe/Gelede cult to celebrate the mystical power(ashe) ... moreof elderly women. Traditionally. This very dramatic piece was acquired from the extensive collection of a Los Angeles based anthropology professor who collected extensively in Africa from 1955 to 1990. This piece is thought to have been collected in Upper Volta/Burkina Faso in the late 1950s. It is in original condition with a wonderful patina. Antique African Guro Baule red tribal mask bust from Ivory coast RARE!
This is an absolutely amazing piece. The head is carved from a solid piece of incredibly heavy dense wood. The cracks you are seeing are from age. This piece is incredibly solid and dense. It's designed much like a bust sitting on top of an old wicker basket it's attached by old canvas or burlap. It's decorated with shells and old bells. The pony tail is very interesting. At the end of the wooden head there is a piece if black fabric hanging and inside is hair. Not sure if it's animal hair or human hair but there are black and gray strands coming out of the end.
