They have played a central role in 20th century history of the country. They waged the longest war of resistance to French colonization of any West African people. And maintained their traditional objects and beliefs longer than many groups in such constant contact with European administrators, traders, and missionaries. The Baule belong to the Akan peoples who inhabit Ghana and West Coast. According to a legend, during the 18th century, the queen, Abla Poku, had to lead her people west to the shores of the Comoe, the land of Senufo. In order to cross the river, she sacrificed her own son. This sacrifice was the origin of the name Baule, for baouli means“the child has died. Now about one million Baule occupy a part of the eastern coast between the Komoé and Bandama rivers that is both forest and savanna land. Baule society was characterized by extreme individualism, great tolerance, a deep aversion toward rigid political structures, and a lack of age classes, initiation, circumcision, priests, secret societies, or associations with hierarchical levels. This auction features an old. Interesting, large, hand-carved wooden mask with horns, probably African- Baule Goli in origin. This mask has been painted red and black, but most of the paint has worn or weathered off on the front(see photos) Some gray paint remains on the back(see photos) The front of the mask has interesting geometric and circular carvings, and a nicely carved mouth with teeth, all intact. There is some apparent damage and/or wear to this mask: one eye socket has some wood loss. The wooden horns appear to have been damaged, and the wood has some checking that is evident on both the front and back. The back of the mask has four holes for tying the mask to the wearer's head. The size of the mask is approximately 17" in diameter with horns that are an additional 8" high and 13" wide. ANTIQUE Carved wood metal Central AFRICAN Head or mask UNIQUE implement MUST SEE
This is a carved wood piece from Africa as pictured. I believe it is from Central or central west Africa and that it is an authentic old piece although I do not have any definitive information and can only say what I see. It is approximately 17 inches long and a little less than 8 inches wide at the maximum. It is actually a mix of metal. Wood and twine as well as a little paint and small nails. I don't know exactly what it is- perhaps a mask, perhaps some kind of implement for some purpose I cannot recognize, or perhaps some instrument used in a ceremony or something. In any event, the main area in the front if the rounded shape that seems pretty obviously to be a face. It is covered, as is the back, with a thin metal, which has two different textures/designs, and there is a metal piece sticking up for the nose as well as two rounded ... morepieces for eyes. Below this area and also above are parts of the"handle" which are wrapped with what I'd call twine. The"handle" has a circular opening. My pictures show the front in its entirety, then a close-up of the front, then two of the back and one from the side to show the opening in the handle especially. I have very little information about this but it seems pretty clearly to be old, relatively unique and in exceptionally good condition as well as quite pleasing aesthetically. I acquired it many years ago in France from some Africans who had collected many items from French West Africa as well as some from Central Africa, so I think it came from there but I don't remember what they explained about the piece. All I can do is judge the detail of the metal work and design- obviously something that took a lot of time and which seems to me to have been done with a good artistic sense and skill. Also, I note the sign of considerable use on the handle as that area is worn in a different way than any other part and it seems clear it comes simply from being held a great deal, almost certainly by being used for something for many, many years. I do not have any actual history on its origin but it appears to be African. The"spikes" on the top of the mask are about 7" tall. It looks like there were ear rings attached at one time, probably matching the Metal Nose ring. The mask has wonderful geometric lines carved into the edge of the face and especially at the top forehead and above. It has a very interesting look and is an eye catching display of rustic Folk Art. This mask has gorgeous inlaid beads and inlaid brass and also what appears to leather like suede that it is all set into, stretched over the wood. I do not know the tribe or exact origin so please see all these photos carefully so you know exactly what you are getting. I put the new screw in the top back so it could be hung more safely, that is how it got damaged and the wood split, it had fallen off a nail it used to hang from. So I added the screw so the nails can hang on to it safely now. Antique African Mask Wood Brass Sea Shells Old Bronze 15x5.5"
The primary material is a heavy wood. Over much of this is what looks like hammered bronze or brass. Nailed onto the wood. The nails have iron content. The sea shells are adhered with a muddy-looking cement. Some of the"mud cement" and shells are fallen off and missing. There are 5 hanging bronze tubes which are movable, and 2 of them have some yarn-like fiber sticking out the end, as if they all did at one time. Antique Statue This auction is for a very nice and very rare antique bronze statue or bust. The previous owner took a trip to Nigeria back in the 1950s and brought back many artifacts from African natives– this was one of them. The statue appears to be earlier then the 1950s but I am not an expert so please take a look at the photos. It has to be at least that old. The statue measures about 19½" tall so it’s just about life sized. It’s from the Benin tribe in Africa. Just a great piece and in great condition– the split in the bronze near the bottom was actually made during casting and is not damage. Guaranteed authentic and at least as old as the 1950s.
