Called ândomaâ by the Baule. Portrait masks are said to portray an honored person of the village who is celebrated during a ceremonial dance known as âMbloâ. It is an aesthetic performance in which this beautifully carved mask would be worn with a multicolored costume and danced in the most graceful manner by either the person it represents or a relative. The âMbolaâ dance reflects feminine virtues including graceful movements and elegant dancing steps and celebrates her beauty. These masks are danced to entertain during days that the Baule do not work and they will also appear to honor important visitors to the village. The refined and finally carved face may be similar to the person for whom the mask was originally carved to represent. The closed eyes and pursed mouth indicate propriety and respect in keeping the eyes downcast with a sense of reserve that a mature woman will cultivate. Antique Hand Carved African Tribal Mask 1920s No Reserve Authentic
If you have been following my auctions you know that I recently got into a great multi-generational estate that spanned 4 generations and this mask was brought back from safari by grandpa.keep in mind the ladies I am dealing with on estate are late 60s and early 70s.in the 1920s and he had some outstanding mounts to prove it. I can not tell you what section or what tribe as this would only be a guess. The mask has some neat markings carved into it and has some very small teeth which makes it look almost a little evil but I am sure there is a theme or a purpose for this mask. Being offered is a nice old antique African mask from the Chokwe tribe. This mask comes from a collection formed in the 1940's and this mask pre dates that time. Most probably early 20th century. The passport mask is 5" wide and almost 8" high. The face is covered in scars that have an artistic flair of their own. The eyes are nearly closed and the mouth reveals sharpened teeth. The top of the mask has been carved to emulate hair. There are a number of holes around the perimeter of the mask so it must have had an additional feature at one time. The wood has developed a. It is in good condition except for some missing beads at the bottom of the mouth. It measures 19" H x 10" W. It may need some cleaning or polishing. ANTIQUE TIKAR. CAMEROON AFRICAN TRIBAL CAST BRONZE MASK Less well-known that the bronzes of Benin. Cameroonian Tikar lost-wax casts are exceptional West African artworks. The Tikar are especially noted for their masks, which were originally used in harvest ceremonies. This superb Tikar mask is finely crafted and has a rich patina consistent with age and use. It measures 16.5" by 10" by 7.5" and is a substantial cast. Engraved circles decorate the cheeks; holes around the base(see photo) may once have secured cloth or other woven material to the casting. Antique? Vintage African Dan Deangle Mask Bells Cowrie Shells Tribal Wood Estate
I purchased this African mask at an estate sale. The people running the sale said that it was very likely purchased in New York City from an antique shop in the 1970's or 1980's. I do not know a great deal about African masks but I think that mask is one of the nicer one's that I have seen in my many years of searching for collectible and antique items. Some research leads me to believe that it was made by the Dan people of Liberia and that it is a deangle or dean gle type of mask. Including the rolls of cloth. This mask measures about 11 ½ by 8 inches. It weighs about 2 pounds 4.9 ounces. The mask is carved from some kind of wood. The bells are fashioned from some kind of metal. The clappers are iron and are attracted to a magnet. The bells are not attracted to a magnet even though it looks like rust on the inside of them. ... moreThey are definitely metal that looks cast. I do not know what kind of metal they are. I think that they probably a very oxidized brass or bronze and that the rust on the inside is from the clappers. The clappers move when the mask is moved and make a tinkling sound. The condition is much like you see it in my photos. It is generally in very good vintage condition. One of the cowrie shells is missing. It looks like the threads have loosened one one side where the the roll of cloth on top meets the roll of cloth on the bottom. It is not very noticeable and I have provided a close-up of it. There are no cracks or breaks in the wood. There is a little dusty looking soil. Otherwise. It is generally fine and as shown. Antique Hand Painted African Mask Unique Tribal Estate Find
Here is an interesting African mask. Please note that I know absolutely in regards to this mask other than the owner stated it was from Africa. When you look at the mask you can definitely tell the paint has age to it and is uneven. The wood is a very light weight fragile type of wood hence the damage at the very bottom of the mask. The wood looks weathered. I'm unsure exactly how old it is. On the inside in what looks like red pen is some writing. NGALAMIOSI. I tried to make it out the best I could. The mask is 12 inches tall and 7 inches wide at it's widest point.

Threaded on wooden rods, and held together by plaited straw rope(see photos) It still works. But the straw rope bindings are frail with age, so you might not want to give it vigorous use as an instrument. The rattle would have been used in rituals and ceremonies. As well as for music making. It has light wear in keeping with its age. This is an authentic. Antique hand carved African face mask. Looks like African Blackwood, as there is some lighter colored sapwood running down the left side of the face. It has 5 inlays in the forehead area. This piece was bought in Africa about 1940 and is in really nice shape. But needs a thorough dusting. It measures 9 1/8" x 2 1/8" x 1" and weighs a little over 5 ozs.

It is beaded with colorful beads and cowry shells. On its forehead and cheeks is solid copper over the wood. It’s mouth is also covered with copper. It has some kind of hair and old fabric sown on top of it. Probably to keep the hair down. Because it’s aged, it has some issues. It has a chip on the side, check the picture. Some of the fabric is peeling off of the mask so it needs to be glued or sowed back on. This is the kind that goes over the head.
