Though identified with the sacred forest and the menâ s society they do not appear to have a well defined religious or ritual function. However they serve to protect the village from external danger or war. In any case. They are not to be seen by women during their appearance. It is carved from one single piece of wood and adorned with cowry(cowrie) shells, red& white beads, raffia, and seed pods on the base of neck. The teeth and nose and ears are in high relief. Very detailed. Copper plating nailed on cheeks and forehead. This was purchased approx 20 years ago at a Sotheby's auction in Nairobi. Kenya. This is an African portrait. Helmet mask of the Makonde tribe. It is made of a light weight wood. This mask was purchased in the early 60's and is believed to be fairly old. There are small remnants of wax and natural fibers around the carve out of its face that were used to affix the hair to it at one point. Very few hair fibers remain, most are on the eyelids. There is a nickel sized hole on the top of its head which was there at the origin of carving(possibly to attach the piece to a spear) there is a large crack running through the hole however. Also, there is another hole on the right side of the temple. There are rubs and nicks on the jaw, eyelids, cheeks, ears, nose, lips and around the head, all are to be expected with a piece this old and made from such a fragile wood. A large square is missing from the front neck. Please inspect ... moreall photos carefully. It is approx. 13 inches from the chin point to the back of the head, 10 inches high and 9 inches from ear to ear. Again, please see photos for all details. You are buying a rare antique hand carved African Senufo Mask. It measures 24" tall by 7" wide and is 4" deep. It has a dark wood with semi sheen finish. It is in good condition for age with light nicks and wear from age and use. It has four holes on side and looks as though it may have been worn in the past. It has an age crack on side with grain. Not noticeable as it is covered by horns and bird. It is vary light and dry to touch and I would estimate its age to be early 1900's but could be older. Old Igbo Spirit Mask Carved Wood Painted Antique African Mask
This great old Igbo spirit mask is 8 1/2 inches long from top to bottom and sticks out from the wall about 4 1/4 inches. Very lifelike. I don't know the exact age of this mask but it is definitely not new. I bought it about 10 years ago and it was in this same condition. There is a screw-type hanger on the back that someone added. Antique Vintage African Art Baule Yaoure Dan Carved Mask Ivory Coast Tribal Art
Beautiful and artistic antique vintage carved African tribal mask. I am not sure if Baule, Yaoure or Dan. I was told that is probably from the Ivory Coast. I don’t know how old it is it was purchased in 1990 for $275 as“old” As you can see from the pics this mask is an incredible elegant and balanced work of art. It will make a great center piece of your African collection or just simply hanging on your wall as an art display. There is one well repaired crack on the left section where the mask touches the face(see pics 5 and 6) which does not affect the section with the mask itself and a little nick missing on the left ear(pics 3 and 4) other than that just the minor scratches and nicks due to the age. Antique African carved wood masked canoe with four men on board on carved wooden stand. Masked face and men have bone eyes. Under mask face is a carved with head lying in mouth.see photo#7. Canoe measures off stand length 15 1/2" height without figures 4" width 3 1/2" stand measures H. 4" L. 8 1/2" W. 4 1/2" Condition man holding on end of canoe has a small wood chip on left shoulder. A very rare African hand carved Mask from the Lulua tribe of Kasai. Congo. It has a straw beard or"Raffi" and burlap head cover. It is an original artifact from the estate of missionaries to Africa. The mask is of hand carved wood. Curiously. The nose of the mask has only one nostril. There are no openings in the down turned eyes. Centre of the forehead has a carved V. Attached to the wooden mask is a primitive hand stitched double layered 7 x 6" 18x15cm) burlap type cloth head cover. Top layer has a small square hole. Inside are a couple ... moreof minor frays as can be expected due to age. The abundant straw Raffi beard is still intact. It is purposely knotted in some places and is fastened to a couple of holes behind the ears of the wooden mask. This mask comes from Lulua tribe of Kasai in the village of Kamonia. Congo. The Lulua Kasai were an important tribe that appeared in the 16th century and were defeated by the Belgians before 1910. Lulua masks. Also known as Bena Lulua masks, are rarely found and not much information is recorded. All we could find was that these kinds of masks were used during young boys rites of passage. This mask is estimated to be at least 100+ years old. Iit is in amazing condition for its age. Aside from a couple of minor wood chips on the backside next to the ears, it's hardly even worth mentioning. A small label by the original owner identifying the mask as authentic is attached to the backside.
