There is a superstructure on the lower portion of the mask featuring an antelope creature, not unlike that seen among the Bambara. The mask does not appear to have undergone any breaks or repairs. It demonstrates normal signs of wear from age, including minor dents, scratches, and age cracking, which should be considered normal. Though the pigment is faded in places, it is still strongly represented. A very nice piece that will make a lovely addition to any collection. Antique primitive African carved carving Bird mask
I found this mask along with other African items at an estate sale. The man I bought it from says that it had belonged to his grandparents who were missionaries in Africa in the fifties. True or not I don't know but this mask does look very old. It appears to be of some kind of bird. I do not know what it was used for or what it represents. There are holes on the forehead and down the sides of the face. Maybe for hair or feathers, they do not go all the way through mask. This is a 27" inch tribal mask that was actually worn during ceremonial dances. The width of this mask is 6" There are 2 openings on each side of the mask for binding this onto the face. The eyes have been painted black. Blue and white and have had slits cut out of them so that the tribesmen could see while performing in the ceremonial dances. Hollow Wood Cells Because of the misunderstanding regarding hollow wood cells. A brief explanation is needed. Any person dating carvings has many criteria to determine age. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. The study of providence shows it takes 250 to 300 years for a dry climate stored Dogon piece to get hollow wood cells. This is factual and not a guess. Even with Dogon. This is an absolutely stunning Makonde Mapiko Mask which we picked up during the second half of 2012 in Southern Tanzania and Northern Mozambique. It is an authentic ritual item which shows signs of considerable ritual use. And measures nearly 12 inches square or 12 inches x 12 inches. This mask is a highly collectible piece due to its authenticity. There is an age crack on the left side of the mask which looks to have been repaired 25 to 30 years ago. The mask is structurally sound. Yet well-weathered. It is between 40 and 50 years old which qualifies it as a bona fide antique. Note: This is not a reproduction. This beautiful antique mask measures 18 1/4" x 11 1/12" It is about 5 1/2" deep.It was purchased in South Africa in 1982. There is an old card attached which reads"Authentic ceramonial mask of the Urhobo tribe(Living in the Niger River delta. Nigeria traw was attached at the little holes on the brim to hide the bearer's face. My mother(85) remembers being told there was something about the blue dye,but she can't remember what! There is an eye screwed into the top for hanging. It has some chips, and a small crack at the top, which does not detract from its appearance. For it's age, it's in great condition. Authentic antique wooden carved and painted African Elephant Mask, Cameroon
Really intriguing and very interesting piece of aboriginal Art. This Mask originates from the Cameroon region in Africa. It's a very old piece although the exact age is unknown it shows lots of wear and really has a lot of character. It's in great condition. Looks absolutely beautiful. There was a crack on the right side of the horn, could even have been a very old repair, also the top of the trunk seems to be chipped or a small piece could have been broken off, but due to the darkening in the wood its not visible. These masks would have be used for funerals and festivities. This piece measures approx. 15" in height. 6" wide and 4.5" deep. Antique Quality Carved African Tribal Kuba Bwoom Mask Helmet Fur Beard&Leather
For sale here is an old authentic Kuba tribal wood carved helmet from the Republic of. It is made mainly of wood with the addition of tin forehead and leather back. The mask is decorated with different size and color beads and shells and has a long skin with fur beard. Will probably date to the early 20th century. Helmet masks of this kind are known among the Bushoong as Bwoom. This is one of the three so-called royal masks of the Kuba. The others being the Mwaash a Mbouy and the Ngaady a Mwaash. In reality it seems that the concept of a triad of"royal masks" has been grossly oversimplified. In truth. The Kuba/Bushoong produce a diversity of masks. And many can perform by themselves or in conjunction with lesser known initiatory or village masks. The Bwoom mask is quite possibly the autochthonous mask of the region. With variants ... morein nearly all of the Kuba sub-groups. Though Bushoong folk tales exist to explain its appearance as a pygmy or a hydrocephalic. The mask may have more in common with other large masculine helmet masks dispersed over the wider general area. Unlike other Kuba masks such as the Mwaash a Mbouy. Which is usually buried with its owner, the Bwoom may be passed down from one person to another. Thus it is not unusual to find old–in some cases ancient–Bwoom masks still being used by young dancers. Antique. Hardwood, hand carved, rare African mask with coiled snake. Measures 18 1/4 inches long and is 7 7/8 inches wide and approximately 2 inches depth. Made of a black hardwood from Africa. Some very small minor scratches but in very good condition for it's extremely old age. This was obtained from an estate sale of a world traveler who collected rare finds from all over the world and only collected the rarest of finds. African Tribal Mask. Chokwe Mwanaphwo- Kasai, Zaire Late 19th. Early 20th century. You can see the use from this mask in rituals. You can also see and smell the age. Please see photos for the condition of the mask. Though they represent a woman- they are only worn by male dancers. Used during initiation or coming of age ceremonies where the young woman's spirit is believed to enter the young male. Typical Chokwe features include the slightly protruding forehead. Elongated brow, and slightly open coffee bean eyes. The features are more refined with a softened mouth& thinner lips than in male Chokwe masks- and the shape of the face is slimmer with finer contours. The typical tears are represented, demarcations at the outsides of each temple and she bears a typical Cross on her forehead. Antique Punu Tribe African Mask
This mask is an authentic Punu tribe mask. It is carved with one piece of wood. Punu masks represent the idealized beauty of Punu women. And should only be carved by Punu men. They are portrayed with their traditional high-domed hairstyle. Diamond- shaped scarification marks on their forehead and they often have eyes that display oriental characteristics. The elaborate Punu hairstyles suggest that the wearer is wealthy as her hair has not been flattened by the need to carry goods. Sometimes Punu masks are painted white with kaolin clay to represent the spirits of dead ancestors during funerals. Please inspect all the photos or ask questions. This really cool African mask is from the Warega tribe. It is adorned with goat hair around its head. It either hung in the home or was worn on the knees. An interesting old wood mask. I have no idea of its origins, the old lady I bought it from at a garage sale said her husband got it from East Africa, but then again she said it may have been Tibet. I'm no expert! nor am I a dealer I just like old and interesting things. the wood is very light. There are traces of a black" resin" that at one time was on the front of the mask, there are splits to the wood on the front only, they do not go through, the back has dust dirty marks and staining, chip to the left side as seen.
