Their history is closely linked to the Luba's, to whom the Songye are related through common ancestors. Having waged war against one another for a long time, the Songye and Luba later formed an alliance to fight the Arabs. Songye origins are shared with the Luba through a common mythical Songye ancestor known as Kongolo, who can be traced through lineages to the 16th century. The linguistic traditions of these neighboring peoples are intertwined as well. It is believed that the founders of the Songye emerged from the lake region in Shaba province to the south in the heart of the Luba homeland. Highly stylized masks called the Kifwebe ... moreare famous Songye tribal art. These masks have grooved pattern on the face and is a common characteristic. Antique African Mask owned by descendant of slave in Mississippi
This very old African mask is owned by a local man whose family are descendants of slaves who have lived here in Woodville. Mississippi for over 200 years. He unfortunately doesn't know much about it other than the fact that the mask has been passed down in his family from generation to generation and that it came from from his grandmother on his mother's side of the family. In spite of the fact that I encouraged him to keep it, he would like to sell it. The colors are very beautiful and other than the tip of one horn being broken, it is in very good shape. It feels very sturdy and strong and it appears to have been carved from one piece of wood although I am no expert on this subject. We live in a very rural area and I am not aware of qualified appraisers here locally, however I would be happy to send more photos by request. Antique African Tribal Hand Carved Wood Effigy Mask & Spear
ITEMS OFFERED AT A LOW"BUY IT NOW" PRICE For your consideration we are offering these two antique African tribal items recently acquired at an antique estate auction and advertised as authentic. I am not an expert on African artifacts so I can not identify what tribe these originated from. Both items have a wonderful aged patina and appear to be genuine. On left is what appears to be a hand carved African effigy mask featuring a lizard above over a likeness of a man below. It is hollowed out on the back and is made of very light wood. The mask has two age cracks in it. One at top and the other on right side. The spear has a crude double edge blade measuring 2 1/4" wide at widest point and 11 3/4" long from point to hammered sheet iron ferrule. The 29" long wood handle is decorated with five woven grass bands and one ... morered vine band. These two antique African tribal items would make great wall décor. Satisfaction guaranteed. Tribal art antique carved mask - possibly African - unique workmanship OLD
This mask has been hung with wire shown- has holes in side. It is 14 inches wide and about 5 1/2 inches wide. Extremely detailed carving and workmanship as I've tried to show in photos. The only damage is on bottom. A bit of crack in the wood but the mask looks whole, and the piece on bottom seems to be all there. Age or origin unknown.
