The Makonde of Tanzania and Mozambique are one of the most prolific art producing peoples in eastern Africa. One of the most prominent of these arts are the life size helmet masks called Lipico which are worn on the top of the head partially covering the face and slightly tipped upward so that the dancer can see. Masks play a prominent role in Makonde life serving to mark the end of the initiation and circumcision cycle for boys as they move into manhood. Among the Baule of the Ivory Coast this dark painted circular mask surmounted by horns is known as Goli Kple kple. The surface shows traces of red pigment and wear. Historically the mask was a late introduction to the Baule who acquired it from the neighboring Wan people sometime around 1900. It appears during ceremonies celebrating the life and death of honored elders or at other times will dance to simply entertain the village or celebrate the harvest. Here is a great Bronze or Brass Tribal Ceremonial Mask. I really do not have any information on this mask. It looks like other Bamileke Masks I have seen. I don't know if this is an original or a reproduction. There is some gold color coming through at the broken or worn forehead area and I'm not sure if bronze would show the gold color. There are holes around the perimeter of the mask and I have seen a mask on a museum website that had a jute-straw-type material inserted through the holes. Or at least some of them. I have a Yam Mask listed and soon will have a very primitive warrior sculpture listed. Vintage Antique? African Art Mende Bundu Mask Poro Secret Society
During tribe ceremonies women wear Bundu masks to symbolize the beauty of the female body and represent an ancestor of the tribe. These masks are typically of one hollowed out piece of wood with detailed carvings(this one is) The facial features are finely carved with folds on the neck area representing wealth and health. The surface of these mask are usually of blackened finish which this is. This mask has some minor chips and scrapes. Worn areas, a couple fine age cracks, but overall condition is very good for its old age. It is bought as is and is considered a used piece. Similar masks go from 600-800 but this is priced lower for a quicker sale. Beautiful piece HTF and rare in this condition.

antique wooden mask handmade handcarved unique rare African Asian wood
I honestly know nothing about masks. I will do my best to describe what I have noticed by studying it. This mask is made of wood and from what I can tell is handcarved. There are markings on the inside they look as though a small crude tool was used to scrape out the shape. It has holes where some kind of rope/leather/ natural fiber material would have been laced through so it could be worn. When looking at the holes they do not appear to be completely uniform where they would have been done by a modern drill. The mask shows some wear in some areas where it may have been worn. There is a crude repair done with metal kind of staples. Also a notch on the top where you put you head in it however it has been painted there and it seem that the paint matches in age and color so it might have been a knot in the wood there that came out when it was ... moremade or sometime along time ago. It measures approx. 14 inches long and 7 inches wide. Please feel free to email me with any thoughts or questions you have. I bought this mask from an estate sale on the north shore area of Chicago. AN TIQUE Carved Wood Mask is in GREAT condition! The back of the mask has worn smooth around the edges. Indicating this was actually used& worn, rather than created only for display. The Eyes have slits carved into them, so you can't see through them, and It also has holes on the sides for attaching this to a person's face/head. There's als holes at the top, which could be used for hanging, but that'top' hole was also used to secure this to one's head. KUYU mask attributed to Kuyu tribes/groups of Gabon. Africa. Kuyu masks are distinguished by white(sometimes black) faces with protruding pursed lips, high-domed foreheads, sharp teeth, scars on cheeks. They almost always feature raised diamond-shape scarification marks on the foreheads and temples. These characteristics are ALL present on this lovely mask. The Kuyu ... morebelieve that the death of an individual is the result of an evil spell. The Priest is called upon to detect the real cause of death by magical means. Wearing a long robe and a carved head. The priest dances amonst the male villagers. He stops dancing in front of the person believed responsible. That person simply accepts this and pays an appropriate fine. women and children are not allowed to see the head. Ritual scars on cheecks and sharpened teeth are part of the carving. This type of mask is used by various tribes in Gabon. Spirit Mask" The white pigments on masks allude to the anti-witchcraft powers of this group. The theme of the mask seems to be a large serpent. The mask starts under the chin with a carving of a large black snake. The body of the serpent becomes the face of the mask. This is an African. Horned, portrait mask from the Yohure tribe. It is approx. 17" long, approx. 8" at its widest and sticks out approx. 6.5" inches from the wall. Antique AFRICAN MASK - Igbo Tribe Ogbega MAIDEN SPIRIT Very Old
I understand from the experts this is a very rare mask. It's a completely hand-carved African spirit mask with the bottom face'sleeping. and with a top head that has faces on both the back and front. I bought it at auction about 25 years ago from the estate of a gentleman who had traveled from Alaska all over the world. I was told it was from southeast Nigeria and made by a member of the Igbo or Ibe Tribe and that it was likely Mmwe Ogbega- meaning beauty. It's 15 and 1/2 inches tall, with the top spirit head being a little over 7 inches. It's 7 and 1/4 inches wide at the'hair' on the top head. I understand these were originally white-washed with something; this one has a little of that left. The rest is old wear with a few modern nicks, but it still has some sort of split bark about its neck. An excellent holiday ... moregift for the serious collector. Weight is 4 pounds without the packaging. I can ship after Monday, December 30. Have been on eBay for 14 years selling interesting jewelry. This rare. Very large mask was carved from a hollowed-out tree or limb. It has individual teeth carved in the large mouth. The top. Accounting for more than half its height, is a beehive design with four larger"star-burst" carvings. The front"star-bursts" have eight"rays" And the back has six. Two of the"rays" on the front left design appear to have broken off. Although I am not an expert. This is apparently very old, if not primitive, and in great condition for its age.

African Mask Wooden Carving Tribal Art Antique Primitive Wall Statue
Up for your consideration is an African wooden hand carved mask. I acquired this at an estate and have no knowledge of origin or age. I can say that the wood appears very old and as the pictures depict there is some splitting in the wood but the splits are not all the way through and therefore the mask is very sound. This is a beautiful piece! This is an African style face mask mounted on a thick. Heavy wood frame. hanging from the mask are six coin medallions. The mask appears to be made from one piece of wood. The only identifier was an antique mall sticker that was removed form the backside of the mask. I don't believe this to be extremely old(though I've been wrong before) but can place it to at least the 80's when a family friend acquired it. The frame measures approx. 24.5" tall, 16.5" wide, and 2.75" deep*Rarely do we have multiples of any given item. So act FAST before it's too late!
