Among the Baule of the Ivory Coast this dark painted circular mask surmounted by horns is known as Goli Kple kple. The surface shows traces of red pigment and wear. Historically the mask was a late introduction to the Baule who acquired it from the neighboring Wan people sometime around 1900. It appears during ceremonies celebrating the life and death of honored elders or at other times will dance to simply entertain the village or celebrate the harvest. The Baule have a number of different masks ranging from refined portrait masks to large headpieces representing wild buffalo or antelope and are exuberantly carved and painted. The Kple kple mask was one of a set of masks that appear during a ceremony and is identified with the spirit of the young men who dance the mask. As one of the first masks to appear during a dance ceremony Goli Kple kple sets the stage and engages the audience and prepares the way for the more important masks that will dance later. Only mask worn by Women in Africa! Super Rare HTF! During tribe ceremonies women wear Bundu masks to symbolize the beauty of the female body and represent an ancestor of the tribe. These masks are typically of one hollowed out piece of wood with detailed carvings(this one is) The facial features are finely carved with folds on the neck area representing wealth and health. The surface of these mask are usually of blackened finish which this is. This mask has some minor chips and scrapes. Worn areas, but overall condition is very good for its old age. It is bought as is and is considered a used piece. Similar masks go from 600-800 but this is priced lower for a quicker sale. Beautiful piece HTF and rare in this condition.

This is a portrait mask from the Guro tribe. It has the common tattooing. Scarring and detailed coif associated with these masks. It is approx. 15 inches long, 8 inches at its widest and sits approx. 6.5 inches away from wall. See photos for chipping and natural scarring around the mouth. There is natural cracking on the right side of the jaw line and inside on the chin area. There is typical rubbing and wear that is expected with these pieces that have traveled far. Been used often and handled much. They are authentic and original without alterations. You can expect age cracking, natural pigment, patina and sometimes residual fire smell if they were used near ceremonial fires. Please inspect photos carefully as I try to display all imperfections as clearly as possible. A note to silver scrappers: There are those on Ebay who will claim that the weight of an object is less than advertised and demand a rebate after the auction has ended. This is an ongoing trend and these individuals seem to complain if silver prices go down between the day they buy and the day they receive. When one melts silver one can lose as much as 5% of the weight in the smelting process and I can not be held responsible for weight lost after melting. I do not generally melt anything that is well made as it makes little sense to me. So any potential loss should be considered before purchasing my items. All my items are measured with a standard tape measure and are rounded off to the quarter inch. I attempt to be as accurate as possible. Less known than the bronzes of Benin. The Tikars bronzes also stand in African art by their finesse. This Superb Tikar mask is symbolic which is unknown to us. Great. Fun vintage/antique Nigerian Yoruba Gelede society dance mask showing a colonial figure wearing his foreign hat. Gelede is one of the Yoruba's three major masking traditions. The masks are traditionally used in dances to honor the women of the community. Especially the powerful"Great Mothers" including both the elderly and the dead ancestors. The performances entertain, educate, and are also aimed at promoting peace and social harmony within a particular community. However, not all masks are positive, but some are made to ridicule negative groups. Images of Europeans were depicted as caricatures and their mannerisms exaggerated in dances. These dance masks were used during the colonial period as a way to criticise the policies imposed on the Africans. Nice patina. A couple of small stress cracks from age. The woman on top between the horns has one half breast. Not sure if it was made this way or intentionally taken off as it almost looks cut off. For sale is a very old carved large African DR Congo Mbaka mask. It is likely from the late 1800s and has the patina and wear of a very old mask. It has the signature ridges on the nose all the way to the forehead and then contuse with the crosshatch design on the top. Bottom, sides of the mask. With some hand paint on it. Some type of engraved metal is under the eyes. It is a nice prior owned mask. It is in great condition with what appears to be scuffs on it that you should be able to see in the pictures. They add character to a vintage/antique item.
