Its perimeter is surrounded with cotton cloth and plaited vegetal fibers The use of cotton cloth and the red paint are unusual for the Lwena. But the coffee-bean eyes, the pointed nose as well as the fine mouth are of Lwena style. Isolated groups of Lwena have historically settled alongside, and mingled with, villages in the southern DRC, so it is not too surprising to see one of their African masks display sparse Congo minimalism more aligned to the Lega and Lele than the artistically formal Angolan groups, like the Chockwe. This attribution is by no means a given, but the charm and surprising power of this African mask is undeniable. It is a fascinating example of the profound and far-reaching influence of masking traditions from the southern Congo. This mask would add some colors to a collection. The Lwena people. Hollow Wood Cells Because of the misunderstanding regarding hollow wood cells. A brief explanation is needed. Any person dating carvings has many criteria to determine age. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. The study of providence shows it takes 250 to 300 years for a dry climate stored Dogon piece

The mask features a woman perched atop a large face. Her arms she holds above her head as if in blessing or celebration. Note the amazing detail in the faces. Body, and adornments of the figures. Both figures feature very unusually shaped noses. In both cases the bridge of the nose resembles that of a bat(see pictures) The color is a rich brown with nice patina. There are various designs carved onto the face mimicking facial tattoos. The bead-work is limited to the various adornments on the figures. A natural handmade rope allows for the mask to be hung. 3 Copper rings are also present as earrings and a nose ring! A very unusual mask! The second picture was taken outdoors with me wearing the mask and the colors are most accurate in that picture! Condition: Good condition with what appears to be 3 missing fingers. This is a very rare African artifact of a hand carved wooden Lulua or Luluwa mask with a straw beard and burlap head cover from the Kasai tribe in Congo. This amazing mask should be exhibited in a museum. It is definitively an original artifact and obviously very old. The mask is of hand carved wood. Curiously. The nose of the mask has only one nostril. There are no openings in the down turned eyes. Centre of the forehead has a carved V. Attached to the wooden mask is a primitive hand stitched double layered 7 x 6" 18x15cm) burlap type cloth ... morehead cover. Top layer has a small square hole. Inside are a couple of minor frays as can be expected. The abundant straw beard is intact and complete. It is purposely knotted in some places and is fastened to a couple of holes behind the ears of the wooden mask. This mask comes from tribes of Kasai in the village of Kamonia. Congo. The Kasai were an important tribe that appeared in the 16th century and were defeated by the Belgians before 1910. Lulua masks. Also known as Bena Lulua masks, are rarely found and not much information is recorded. All we could find out was that these kinds of masks were a pparently used during the circumcision of young boys or other rites of passage. We acquired this amazing artifact from a collection of a Missionary to Africa. The wooden face measures app. 11" 28cm) in length and about 6 1/2" 16cm) in width. The straw beard is about 4" 10cm) long. A small label identifying the mask is attached to the backside. Antique African Sacred Dan Mask Of Hand Carved Wood From Liberia
This is a hand carved wooden mask made by the Dan People of Liberia. Africa. This sacred mask was used in tribal ceremonies and offered protection. The Dan Tribe masks are identified by their high forehead and pouting mouth. The mouth is the opening that you can see through when wearing it. As you can see, this was carved by hand and has a glossy black finish on the face. Is this a gle mask? She looks like a lovely lady to me. I assume the holes on the side were to tie it to the face. The hole at the top has been used to hang it for decoration. The mask measures 15 1/2" tall. 6 1/4" wide and 5" deep at the forehead. It weighs 2 pounds 1.5 ounces. I am not an expert on African(or any) masks. But this looks like it is in very good condition. There's a bit of wear on the paint at the tip of the nose and the raised decorations ... moreon the forehead. Those are the only flaws that I can find. I wish this mask could talk. It could tell me how it got from Liberia to an antique shop in Canada where my friend purchased it over 40 years ago. It's been a much loved display piece in his home since then.now. For sale is a very old carved and painted African DR Congo Yaka dance mask. It is likely from the late 1800s and has the patina and look of a very old mask. The white color of the mask is genderless; white is a symbol for peace. Deities, spirits of the dead, and the afterlife. It is thus the predominating color in funeral celebrations and memorials. The gallery picture is outside natural light and reflects the true coloration of the mask. The indoor light. All the other pictures, washes out the colors(especially the red) Based on another mask I have. And the way they are both painted, I assume this too is Mali and done by the Karumba tribe. Further, the bottom portion is in the shape of an antelope, and the matches up for the type of art these people specialized in. That all said, I am not 100% certain that this is Karumba, but am certain it is old and African in origin. The mask from the bottom of the base to the tip of the helmet is 39" long. It is at least 25 years old as it was purchased in Africa in the 80's from an artifact gallery.There is a crack in the wood from age near the top.
