ANTIQUE AFRICAN HARD PETRIFIED LEATHER TRIBAL VASE the vase was acquired through a estate art storage auction of west African artifacts and other antiques. i know very little of African art. the vase. I am not relay shore it is a vase but we will just call it that. it stands at 17 1/2 inches tall and 29 inches round at its widest point. it comes with 2 rings one on witch it sits on and the other on its neck. there appear to be small metal pins or dots in it. the vase itself is made of some hard petrified leather and wood. there are small carvings on it of what looks like a sun and other images i cant make out. there is some form of stitching on the neck made of leather. it has a leather strap with some fur of the animal going around the base and has been petrified to the base. Antique 19 C. African Art Used Tanzania Makonde Lipico Tribal Dancer Helmet Mask
This listing is for an authentic antique African Makonde Lipico dancer helmet type mask. The mask represents a female tribal elder(with the lip plug) And is worn by boy dancers at their initiation. It measures 9" tall, 10.5" front to back, and 7+" side to side overall, when resting flat on the rim of the neck. It is in fairly good condition, though most of the human hair is missing. LG OLD ANTIQUE AFRICAN NATIVE AMERICAN LIDDED STORAGE BASKET VTG ART
This is a very old large antique lidded olla basket. I was told when I purchased it several years ago that it was Native American Indian. However, one of my more knowledgable viewers has told me this was more likely a basket from African. Either way it is a wonderful antique basket. It would have been used for storage such as dried foods. Grains etc. The outside of the basket has a geometric pattern that is quite faded but on the bottom and the inside of the basket the colors are still very vibrant with purples and blues. It would have had two handles at one time but both handles are broken off. It has places on the rim of the vessel and the lid that are worn but the basket is still fairly strong for its age. The lid fits very snugly. It is a little askew which only adds to the charm. It is a large size- 12" high x 12" across and ... moreweighs 3 pounds. This is a really neat old basket. Antique African Art - Bamun - Bamileke Tribe Cameroon Heavy Cast Bronze Ladle
Offered at auction is an antique bronze ladle. Origin Bamun, probably Bamileke tribe, from Cameroon. Heavy casting, weight 7-8 pounds, 19.5" in length, with a wide, deep ladle bowl. The piece is highly detailed, estimated age from the later 19th century to 1930's era. The large end of the ladle depicts an African face, highly stylized, with cheek scarifications, and detailed hairstyle. The handle of the ladle contains an African native, tall and thin, with a slightly distended belly, clad in a native breechcloth. The figure is seated on or leaning against what might be a tree stump, and is holding an object in the right hand, probably a pestle for crushing herbs and berries. The face and bald head show further evidence of scarification. The ladle has a heavy patina, which is built up especially on the handle where it would be held ... moreby fingers and thumb. The inside of the ladle bowl is quite darkened and heavily encrusted with material from long-term usage. The collector I acquired it from in the mid-1990's was a former museum director and was an expert on African art. He said that the ladle was likely from one of two possible sources, either the house of a wealthy king or chief, or from an important shaman or witch doctor. He believed it was the latter, because of the human figure on the handle holding the pestle, and the scarifcations on the large face and the handle figure. His thinking was that the ladle was used in the preparation and cooking of medications and potions, and that figure ont he handle and the face on the bowl of the ladle were meant to draw out the medicinal essence from the materials being mixed and cooked together. All in all. This is a wonderful example of tribal art, a great native bronze casting in great condition. I've always found it fascinating that in African tribal work there is no division between artworks and utilitarian objects. It is all art. This beautiful antique mask measures 18 1/4" x 11 1/12" It is about 5 1/2" deep.It was purchased in South Africa in 1982. There is an old card attached which reads"Authentic ceramonial mask of the Urhobo tribe(Living in the Niger River delta. Nigeria traw was attached at the little holes on the brim to hide the bearer's face. My mother(85) remembers being told there was something about the blue dye,but she can't remember what! There is an eye screwed into the top for hanging. It has some chips, and a small crack at the top, which does not detract from its appearance. For it's age, it's in great condition. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Hollow Wood Cells Because of the misunderstanding regarding hollow wood cells. A brief explanation is needed. Any person dating carvings has many criteria to determine age. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. Antique Native American ? African ? Tribal Beadwork on Hide - Folk Art
A decorative piece of bead work. Which has been applied to hide. I believe this is a form of tribal art. I am unsure of it's use, or whether it formed part of a specific item. The leather or hide, folds in half and there is some old string around the fold of the leather(please see images) I have photographed the item all round and hope you can see there is a good age patina to the leather. There is one larger bead missing to the top. The beadwork side measures a fraction over 6 inches long and a fraction over 1 1/2 inches across. WONDERFUL VINTAGE AFRICAN ETHIOPIAN COFFEE SPOON ~ ~ ON A PROFESSIONALLY MADE METAL DISPLAY BASE ~ ~ HAND-CARVED PRIME EXAMPLE OF AFRICAN ETHNIC CULTURAL ART ~ ~ BEING OFFERED AT A VERY REASONABLE PRICE(we have sold them for close to $200.00 each to ethnographic art collectors! The spoon is Approximately 11" long. The metal base adds about 1 1/2" to the height. For a total height of 12 1/2" The cup section has a beautiful translucency not really visible in the pictures- this is due to the fine carving in being able to make this so thin that light can radiate through. Yet still be strong enough for every day use. These used to be quite common in Ethiopia. But are now getting almost impossible to find. Or expensive from antique dealers. The younger people move to cities/ industrial areas for employment, and the cultural art gradually ... moredies out. These were purchased directly in Eithiopia, are not available from any importers I know of, hence are quite hard to come by. This is a great opportunity to acquire a scarce piece. Custom mounted in museum manner, and a choice collectible example, for a relatively small amount of money. These really look wonderful in sets of 3-5. So if you are interested in a pair I have a few more left from my collection that would be available- all are similarly mounted but vary slightly in size, color, orientation, etc. Circa early 20th Century. Its in nice antique condition. Slightly loose at the handles and the woven material is very brittle so tiny bits and pieces fall off it when you handle it not using the handles- hence there are some scattered losses that are not bad at all in the overall context of the piece. This is a antique or vintage handcarved African wood tribal mask. I believe this mask could have been used for a tribe, but could just be a very old decor piece. Not quite sure. Mask gives off a slight scary, heavy presence. This mask was acquired at an antique auction in central Florida. Wood has nice patina and shows signs of age.
