As a people, they were one of the strongest oppositional forces to French colonization of West Africa, and as a result, have held quite closely to their cultural heritage throughout recent history. African tribal Ethiopian carved headrest sculpture ethnographic art, decor 002
Ethiopian headrests are often times intricately carved and other times they are very simple yet profound in their shape and elegance. This particular headrest has a very primitive charm. Serving as a pillow that is cool and comfortable in their tropical climate. And protecting their hairstyles by raising the head above the bed. Headrests are items of great personal attachment and were also seen as the seat of dreams. Dreams are seen as prophetic, foretelling important events, providing warnings and communicating messages from the other world. This lovely and well used headrest measures 7" wide and 6.5" tall. Very minor cracks and chips which are to be expected with an item of this age and amount of use. If you smell this headrest you will smell the remains of that wonderful odor of the fire that was burning while the owner was sleeping ... moreor resting near by. What a wonderful aroma evoking images of tribal life! The measurements are 6.5" tall and 5.5" across the top and 4.5" across the bottom. It's a bit asymmetrical which adds to its charm.

Wood Kasongo art is strongly influenced by their neighbors the Luba. Kusu and Hemba. Kasongo people live in dispersed villages in the regions of the Luba, Bangubangu, Hemba, and Songye in the province of Katanga in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They are of Mongo origin and moved to their new territory in the 18 th century where they became vassals of chiefs Luba(Samba) Bangubangu, and Hemba. In 19 th century they played ... morean important role in the region as mercenaries for the Arabs during their occupation of area. Their system of government shows Kuba influences. Their chiefs come from patrilineal clans and govern with a council of notables and are assisted by ritual specialists. Their religion is a combination of Mongo and Luba believes. Nature spirit cults belong to their Mongo heritage. Whereas, ancestor cults and initiations are more reminiscent of the Luba and Songye practices. Antique African BENIN Bronze Tribal Art Sculpture NIGERIAN Princess' Head
Antique African BENIN Bronze Tribal Art Sculpture NIGERIAN Princess' Head Ref: BR220213 This is a large and impressive sculpture depicting a Benin Princess standing approximately 14 inches(35.5cm) high and weighing 3.9 kg. It was sculpted by hand and cast in bronze using the lost wax process. The people of Benin(now known as Nigeria) are descended from the Ife tribe and have been making bronzes in exactly the same way for many hundreds of years. I am not an expert; it is therefore quite difficult to date this piece accurately but I believe that it was probably made in the first half of the 20th century. Of course there is a distinct possibility that it could be considerably older. There are a few small holes here and there and a couple of larger ones on the head(see photos) There is also some oxidisation. Mainly on the face. Condition ... moreis otherwise good. P hotographs form a very important part of my description and therefore bidders are advised to study them carefully and to contact me for any additional information they may need. Numbering nearly 2 million people, the Ashanti, or Asante, of Ghana are a widespread people in the southern portion of the country, and belong to the Akan conglomerate of ethnic groups. Most famous for their elaborate stools, which are carved for each member of the Ashanti society, they are capable craftsman, producing both fine metalwork via the lost wax casting method, and highly detailed woodwork, from maternity figures, to stools, to household items, to their internationally renowned"acua'ba" fertility dolls. The honored deceased are also commemorated with fired ceramic head busts. Understood ... moreoriginally to be symbolic of power. And tied closely with the succession of chiefs and kings, the Ashanti stool is a central part of their cultural identity, steeped in tradition, and even represented upon their cultural flag. The stools are said to contain the souls of their owners, and are kept and used to consult that soul after their passing. This Ghanian Ashanti stool is beautifully carved, and appears to be in good overall condition. It is normal, indeed typical for Ashanti stools to demonstrate a lean in one direction, as this would be the side that was used to sit upon. As such, a lean is present in this piece, and distinguishable in the photos. In the center of the seat is affixed a decorative piece of metal, most likely intended as a representation of prosperity. It stands successfully on its own, and in a safe room should require no additional support. This piece does display possible signs of use, and exhibits minor age cracking, as well as normal marks like edge chipping, rubbing, etc. An absolutely fantastic piece that has come to us directly from Ghana, and will undoubtedly make a beautiful addition to any quality collection! Yoruba Shango Dance Wand, Staff, Yorouba, Nigeria, African Tribal Creations, art
An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION! Normal.dotm 0 0 1 131 751 Full Sail 6 1 922 12.0 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false This NO RESERVE auction is for a Yoruba Shango Dance Wand. These wands are intended as an object to be carried by worshippers loyal to the god Shango. Especially during celebrations that champion him, and are considered one of the most important pieces of art in the Shango cult. In the canon of Yoruba mythology, Shango, or Sango, was once a mortal king, and an ancestor of the Yoruba people. He was considered to be an extremely powerful, and often violent ruler, capable of producing thunder and lightening. This power, however, eventually resulted in his death, which came through the accidental destruction of his own palace with lightning. His followers believed that after his death. He became a ... moredeity. Wands or staffs such as these typically depict a follower of Shango. The colors red and white, sacred to Shango, often embellish the carving and are procured from natural pigments. This piece features the common kneeling female worshipper theme. Beautifully pigmented on a short, stout handle. This figure bears the traditional headdress of the Shango cult, a double-bit axe, which is large and prominent on this piece. The woman is depicted in full garb, with a cloth representatively carved over her shoulders, and resting in her hands. The wand also utilizes kaolin(white) and red pigments. Scarifications are clearly represented on the face in the carving. A fair amount of pigment, though faded, still remains on the piece, and its condition is quite good, and its patina is quite heavily encrusted. The piece does display typical age and wear related marks, including minor cracking, dings, scratches, etc, but nothing out of the ordinary. It will surely please this auction's winner! An interesting fact: Shango is the god of thunder and lightning. Fittingly. The territory the Yoruba occupy experiences one of the highest incidences of thunderstorms in the world, second only to

All members of this group originally came from an area to the north and migrated in various complex patterns throughout the last several centuries. Fulani traders moving steadily southwards into Cameroon forced the Bamum into their current location during the 17th century. The Bamum are also one of the first peoples in Africa to develop a writing system under the auspices of King Njoya at the end of the 19th century. Njoya was able to maintain his status as a ruler under German indirect colonial rule but was forced into exile when the French took over in 1916. The kingship has since been restored. The peoples of the Grasslands reserve the highest allegiance for their lineage ancestors. Ancestral spirits are embodied in the skulls of the deceased ancestors. African tribal currency jewelry ethnographic art collectible, Fulani W. Africa %
The glass beads in this Fulani necklace were most likely made in Bohemia and traded to the Fulani in the 1800's or early 1900's. The Fulani were one of the dominating cultures of all of West Africa but colonization put an end to their empire. Resulting in the scattered nature of the Fulani today. They value colorful beaded jewelry and body ornamentation above most African people. Since they are nomadic, the Fulani produce a very limited range of art objects and purchase or trade for materials for subsequent use. This necklace measures 18" in length. There are 5 different colors of beads in this necklace including the red ones.
