This so-called 'race' mask (sharp face, hollowed-out round eyes, tanned mouth) was held against the face with cotton strips attached to the perforations of the contours and knotted behind the head. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. The study of providence shows it takes 250 to 300 years for a dry climate stored Dogon piec

Do use wood and other mediums. Here the finished original clay is now complete. The sculptor will take it to the foundry now, get a bid then begin the first stages of the lost wax process. The first step can be shocking for some as they begin to decide how this original will be cut up. In order to prepare the original clay sculpture for molding. It will be dissected by cutting the clay with wire and by cutting the armature with a saw. The armature is what helped support the clay in place while the artist was creating it. Note the registration marks which later in the process will serve to realign the parts. Shown here are the sections of the original clay sculpture after having been dissected. Now the various parts of the original are carefully mounted on clay plugs before the rubber mold material is applied. The clay plug later serves as a pour spout for the mold.

Beautiful Mossi Nuna Messenger Mask_African Tribal Art
Beautiful Mossi Nuna Messenger Mask Beautiful Original Mossi Nuna Messenger Mask Type of object: Mask Material: wood. Pigment Ethnic Group: Mossi Country of origin: Burkina Faso Dimensions: 40 inches(103 cm) Condition: Good Additional information: The Nuna inhabit some zones of the center-south of Burkina Faso. To the south of the Gurunsi. They belong to the same group than the Gurunsi, Winiama, Nunuma and Lela. At the beginning of XV century. A group of riders called Nakomsé moved from Dagomba, in the north of Ghana, towards the north subjugating the pacific tribes of the territory that now is Burkina Faso. They founded the state of Tenkodogo, that was the first known Mossi state. The military power of the Mossi was based on their organized cavalry. At the end of XV century. Pacific agriculturists Nuna and Winiama emigrated from the ... morenorth of Ghana to their present locations fleeing from the Mossi. In the wooded territories where the Nuna and the Winiama had settled, the horses of the Mossi succumbed before the attack of the tse tse fly, abundant in that zone. Soon legend among the Mossi arose on"the magical" powers of the Nuna and the Winiama, that were able to sleep their enemies. On the other hand. The Nuna built their villages such way that the Mossi could not penetrate with their horses. From time to time, the Mossi made incursions to the fields where the Nuna worked, to capture slaves. Except for some hunting and sweet water fishing tasks at dry time. When the grain reserves become scarce, the Nuna are dedicated mainly to agriculture. Among them there are not different social classes, nor political heads. The religious leaders are the unique ones with certain authority. Each town has a council of elders that takes the important decisions. In the center of the Nuna villages usually there is an altar dedicated to the supreme being. The one who has created everything. Each group with common ancestros keep in a hut the objects they use in rituals, the objets that help them to maintain the contact

The powerful neck supports a head with a pointed protruding snout, and this line extends upwards, beyond the long sharp ears, in a gentle curve ending with the vigorous towering horns. These finely-shaped antelope heads are colorfully ... morepainted with large triangles in white, brownish-red, black, and light-blue, and the triangles are filled in with rows of spots. The headdress represents Yirige. The culture hero, who drove away evil spirits at the first tilling of the land. Mask dancers descended from heaven repeat the deeds of the hero-founder Yirige and his children. The mask also appears at the death ritual following the mourning period. The mask. Which to an observer seems impossible for a dancer to balance, is fastened to the head with a plaited basket or by some other way. Other masks are rare. L'ART BAMOUM par TARDITS-CAMEROUN-BAMILEKE-BAMUM-TRIBAL-AFRICAN ART BAMUM TRIBAL
L'histoire singulière de l’art bamoum(Cameroun) Claude TARDITS 2004 NEUF- MINT! DESCRIPTION: Paris. 2004, 127 pages, 140 illus. bibl. cartes.

According to a legend, during the eighteenth century, the queen, Abla Poku, had to lead her people west to the shores of the Comoe, the land of Senufo. Baule society was characterized by extreme individualism, great tolerance, a deep aversion toward rigid political structures, and a lack of age classes, initiation, circumcision, priests, secret societies, or associations with hierarchical levels. Each village was independent from the others and made its own decisions under the presiding presence of a council of elders. Everyone participated in discussions, including slaves. Socially they are divided into small family groups called dola. Which are headed by a council of elders with an elected leader. Due ... moreto the difficulty of access to their land of rocky hills and savannas. The Mumuye remained in near total isolation until 1959. Mumuye artists are famous for their wooden statues known as iagalagana. The Mumuye statuary was discovered in 1968. With no royal system. The Mumuye are organized by age classes and choose a village chief who is assisted by a council of elders. The vabong secret society regulates Mumuye religious life. Entry into the society is achieved through initiation ceremonies. The initiation of boys begins at the age of ten and takes place in a tsafi hut. Where the statues are kept. Even though the Mumuye show great respect for the sculls of the ancestors, their statuary does not depict ancestors, but rather incarnates tutelary spirits. Yet, statues reinforce the status and prestige of their owner who, as he holds them in his hands, has a dialogue with them and thus ensures his personal protection. The functions of sculptural figures are varied. They were used by both diviners and healers. Whose professions included diagnosis and cure of ill health and other kinds of misfortunes. LOBI THIL WORSHIP POST STATUE LOBI THIL WORSHIP POST STATUE Type of object: Post Material: wood. Pigment Ethnic Group: Lobi Country of origin: Burkina Faso Condition: Item is in good condition. Heigth: 47 inches(121 cm) The post was used to carry a recipient for tribal animist sacrifices. About the Lobi and their Art The Lobi carve numerous types of objects. Ranging from those used every day to figures that embody religious ideals. The figures(bateba) are recognized as living beings, which are placed on the shrines of thila and are able to communicate with one another and to fight off witches. It is believed by the Lobi that at one time they lived in a metaphorical Garden of Eden at one with the god and wanting for nothing. However. As their numbers began to increase men began to fight one another over women, and as a result the god turned ... morehis back on them. Not wanting them to be completely lost, the god sent forth thila to take care of the people. The thila are contacted through a diviner who delivers their messages, demands, and prohibitions to the people. The village thil is embodied in a village shrine but, since thila may leave the shrines, they are often uninhabited. Below the thila cosmologically, yet above men, are numerous bush spirits. The Lobi are able freely to distinguish between the bush spirits and the thila based on a series of factors, which at first seem quite confusing to the outsider. Sculptors. Who live off farming, devote only part of their time to sculpture; their period of apprenticeship may be reduced, so that the objects are of variable quality, often quite mediocre. The Lobi do not use masks, but create male and female spirit figures called bateba and heads sculpted on top of a post planted in the ground. Bateba is considered as a living being and may see, communicate, and intervene on behalf of its thil spirit. Lobi figures are between 2” and 35” high. In every house a small shrine room is set apart for the worship of ancestral spirits. Shrines are built to the thil spir

Ashanti Akuaba Figure African Tribal Creation Art Maternity FERTILITY Ghana Doll
You are bidding on the Ashanti Akuaba Figure African Tribal Creation Art Maternity FERTILITY Ghana Doll Dimensions of the maternity figure are 13 1/2" x 5 1/2" x 2" It weighs 6 oz. The following description copies from the web page: The Ashanti or Asante tribe of Ghana is well known in the world of African art for their intricate and very fine craftsmanship. Experts at creating beautiful functional objects. Such as their famous stools, the Ashanti are also incredible at figure carving, as evidenced here. Unique to the Asante(Akan) of Ghana. Is the Akua'ba doll, an artform for which they have garnered much recognition and acclaim. In fact, the American Museum of Natural History has a large collection of these objects. The Akua'ba doll is a small to medium sized figure, carved from a solid piece of wood which demonstrates ... morean abstracted interpretation of Asante beauty ideals, namely the flat, rounded, disk-shaped head that is an immediately identifying characteristic of these dolls. They mostly commonly display a very large head, small body, small, terminated arms, and generally end in a base, rather than legs, though this is not always the case. Scarifications on the doll's'face' are said to be a'medicine' to guard against convulsions. The purpose of these dolls is rooted in a legend of a woman named Akua who allegedly was unable to bear a child. She visited a diviner and commissioned a small wooden doll which she then carried and treated as though it were her own living baby. The people of her villiage began referring to the doll as Akua'ba. Which translates to"Akua's child. After a time, she produced a healthy baby girl, who then grew up with this doll. This legend produced a still extant tradition of similar wooden objects being commissioned in the event of apparent infertility. The woman would then carry this small doll, often on her back in a cloth wrap, and treat it as though it were her own child until she is able to bear her own. ATTENTION! This piece

Kuba Mask, DRC Congo, African Tribal Creations, Art Bakuba Bacouba power royalty
An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION An artistically advanced culture. The Kuba(Bakuba) people of the Democratic Republic of Congo number nearly a quarter of a million, and live in the center of the DRC region. As both farmers and hunters, the agricultural work is generally considered to be the responsibility of women within the community, with the exception of clearing the fields and growing tobacco. The Kuba produce a large variety of different art forms as well as musical instruments, canoes, and other functional items. The numerous villages all recognize the authority of a central king. Many different mask and figure types are known and documented, and each have their own regional varieties. Many consider the art of the Kuba to be some of the more desirable, advanced, and ornate of the art producing African ethnic groups. ... moreThis Kuba mask features horn-like projections from the top of the piece.
