African Tribal Art Ebony Wood 12" Staute Natives
This auction is for an estate find of a dark wood statue. It has 3 natives carved in the center section. Each native has their hand on the other with their other hand holding up the top section. The wood looks to be ebony( it is a dark gray) The statue is 12" tall and could have been used for a candle holder. There is hold in the top about the size of a candle and is aprox. 1/2" deep. ANTIQUE AFRICAN HARD PETRIFIED LEATHER TRIBAL VASE the vase was acquired through a estate art storage auction of west African artifacts and other antiques. i know very little of African art. the vase. I am not relay shore it is a vase but we will just call it that. it stands at 17 1/2 inches tall and 29 inches round at its widest point. it comes with 2 rings one on witch it sits on and the other on its neck. there appear to be small metal pins or dots in it. the vase itself is made of some hard petrified leather and wood. there are small carvings on it of what looks like a sun and other images i cant make out. there is some form of stitching on the neck made of leather. it has a leather strap with some fur of the animal going around the base and has been petrified to the base. It then comes over the top to form a handle. it has some weight ... moreto it. 4 to 5 pounds. this vase is very old and has seen a great deal of use. it is covered with markings and signs of usage and repairs over its life time as most things its age would have. came to me in a storage bin estate auction its old i never seen anything like it before. no reserve price. Up for auction today are(2) Wall Art Tribal Masks. They are hand-carved and are made of a dense wood that I believe is ebony based on the weight and tightness of the grain. I do not know about their exact origin or location of manufacture. The larger mask measures 6" Wide x 9.5" High; the small mask measures 3.5" Wide x 7.75" High; both have carved spaces on the reverse where you can mount them on a nail or screw. I have owned these masks for several years and have always admired the geometric carving of the headdresses and the smoothness of the faces. Each is a wonderful accent piece on its own or as a pair they make a striking display. They will make a distinctive addition to your collection.

These beads are African amber. There are 40 round beads on this strand and they 2.3/4 around. The strand is 20" in length when doubled as in the photographs. This measurement does not include the string they are strung on. Each bead is slightly different providing proof that they were not machine made or worked. They are a beautiful rich caramel color. The Mossi people came to be in Burkina Faso from Ghana via a group of invaders who conquered the territory to become the largest ethnic group of Burkina Faso. An agrarian people who also raise cattle on a relatively large scale. The Mossi boast one of the only centralized governments for a single culture in West Africa. The population is divided into something of a caste system, and the art producing blacksmiths and wood carvers are actually separate castes. The art of the Mossi is generally reserved for the aristocratic, and though Islam has pervaded a large portion of Mossi culture, some of their original artistic styles still persist today. Of the two distinct social groups. The tengabisi are those who possess the masks. They are most ... morerenowned for their colorful plank masks. Which can often be several feet high and quite heavy. This is a small plank mask, most likely a reproduction due to its size, but tradition in style, and attractively pigmented. There is a superstructure on the lower portion of the mask featuring an antelope creature, not unlike that seen among the Bambara. The mask does not appear to have undergone any breaks or repairs. It demonstrates normal signs of wear from age, including minor dents, scratches, and age cracking, which should be considered normal. Though the pigment is faded in places, it is still strongly represented. A very nice piece that will make a lovely addition to any collection. Similar to the Bobo in both their agrarian society. And in their style of mask production, the Bwa are a moderately sized group of people stretching through parts of Burkina Faso and Mali. They exist in something of a caste system, dilineated into three primary male professions; the farmers, the blacksmiths, and the artists. These masks are the products of the latter caste. The majority of Bwa masks are what are considere'plank ... moremasks' masks that are often rather large and flat, often extending laterally, or vertically, or taking a circular form. They are, for the most part, rendered in abstract. Each mask produced by the Bwa people is representative of a spirit of the wilderness encountered by a family elder. An effigy of this spirit is then produced in the form of a mask for the purpose of protection for that elder's family. This beautiful circular spirit mask features a common Bwa theme of alternating geometric patterning. Pigmented with traditional colors of red, black, and white. The spirits features are carved in a traditional form, abstract, but vaguely anthropomorphic. This simplistic round style is reasonably common, and well documented in the pantheon of Bwa masks. It is relatively small for a Bwa mask, but not necessarily small relative to other masks. On the rear facade is a tie-on area where the wearer's face would be secured to the mask via cordage. It displays normal age related markings, including minor dents, scratches, age cracking, etc, which should be considered normal. Antique 19 C. African Art Used Tanzania Makonde Lipico Tribal Dancer Helmet Mask
This listing is for an authentic antique African Makonde Lipico dancer helmet type mask. The mask represents a female tribal elder(with the lip plug) And is worn by boy dancers at their initiation. It measures 9" tall, 10.5" front to back, and 7+" side to side overall, when resting flat on the rim of the neck. It is in fairly good condition, though most of the human hair is missing.
