Kifwebe Mask from the Songye of the Congo Here. In my humble opinion, is a rare example of true"ethnographic art. I admit to being a"kifwebe addict. with a deep love for the art form, and so I'm selling some of my pieces to make way for more. Here's what excited me about this mask. Here's an excerpt from the amazing book. An African World: The Basongye Village of Lupupa Ngye. Published in 1974 by Alan P. Merriam(p. 144) The masks were made by specialists; once completed. The mulawe mixture(unknown contents) was made and. In the presence of the society members, rubbed on the mask. It is this magic which'activates' the mask. And the wearer enters into a special state: when you wear the kifwebe, you become something else. This state is known as bwadi. And the person who enters it by donning the mask is no longer ... morehuman, nor is he a spirit; he becomes kifwebe. I have no idea what's made the patination on this mask. Antique Native American ? African ? Tribal Beadwork on Hide - Folk Art
A decorative piece of bead work. Which has been applied to hide. I believe this is a form of tribal art. I am unsure of it's use, or whether it formed part of a specific item. The leather or hide, folds in half and there is some old string around the fold of the leather(please see images) I have photographed the item all round and hope you can see there is a good age patina to the leather. There is one larger bead missing to the top. The beadwork side measures a fraction over 6 inches long and a fraction over 1 1/2 inches across. This is an extremely graceful and beautifully carved Dogon house post from Mali Africa. The symbolism reflecting the belief system of the Dogon is profound on this piece. It stands on a metal stand and measures 60" tall by 10" wide. It is in great condition and thought to be less than 40 years old. Gentle and powerful describe it's presence. A treasure for sure!

African tribal furniture carved stool ethnographic art sculpture Camaroon decor
This delightful beautifully carved stool comes from the Bamilike tribe of Cameroon. It is unusual in that the top of the stool is curved in a most graceful way with delicate carving surrounding the outer edge. There is some slight original African repair to one edge which can be seen in the included photos. The stool measures 16" wide. 12" deep and 14" tall. The exact age is unknown but thought to be less than 20 years.

This unusual and intriguing Bamilike table displays delightful carving. There are three handsome faces on three sides and exquisite carving on the legs. It comes from Camaroon Africa and is made of African hard wood. It is in very good condition showing only some African repair work on the top of the table which shows if you double click and enlarge the enclosed photos. The exact age of the table is unknown but it is thought to be around 40 to 50 years old. It measures 22" high and 16" across the top.

African tribal currency Bamana iron oil lamp or candle holder ethnographic art
This is a multi-armed lamp with a cup to hold oil at the front. Oil known as tulu. Made from the Karite tree nut was burned in the cups to produce a dark, smoky light that was as much a light for ritual purposes as for illumination. Lamps such as this would serve in the house but also would provide light, real and ritual, for masks when they danced at night. The small forged bird at the top is praising God with either a Muslem position of prayer or a traditionalist animist's gesture of prayer. The arms of the lamp repeat this gesture. Small spoons hanging by chains were used to adjust the wick, made of twisted cotton burning in the Karite oil. This lamp with it's standardized forms is an example of the change of style in Bamana lamps as other forms of iron material became available and in this instance the arms and support of the ... morelamp is riveted together rather than fully forged.
