Vintage African Tribal Art Figural Stool
Here we have a real piece of quality vintage African art. A tribal art stool with a typically styled native figure in a exaggerated pose holding up the seat. In my opinion this piece dates from between 1900-1940. Now I am by no means an expert in African arts but I can see from the style and natural patina on this piece that it does has plenty of authentic age. All in very good condition. Measures 41cm/ 16inchs tall and 27cms/11inches across the seat. A beautiful piece to add to any collection. Please check my other items for more stunning tribal pieces. Posted with

African tribal Tuareg small leather purse bag ethnographic art fashion ethnic
Tuareg is a term used to identify numerous diverse groups of people who share a common language and a common history. Tuareg camel caravans played the primary role in trans-Saharan trade until the mid 20th century when European trains and trucks took over. Tuareg history begins in northern Africa. Many groups have slowly moved southward over the last 2.000 years following the promise of a more prosperous land in the south. Although most Tuareg now practice some degree of Islam they are not considered Arabic. Much Tuareg art is in the form of jewelry, leather and metal saddle decorations and finely crafted swords. They are located in Niger, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Senegal and Mali. Please note the fine embroidery work on this bag. This work is done by the women of the tribe. This bag is rich in color. Very supple and in very good condition. ... moreIt opens from the bottom exposing a compartment for valuables that slides in and out but is tight fitting so as not to easily come open but also keep the contents extremely safe. It measures 16" long with the fringe but not counting the over the shoulder cord. Very precious!

African Tribal Currency Bracelet/Anklet Ethnographic Art, Bronze Jewelry AWESOM!
This amazing piece of ART or jewelery once had it's home with the Baule People of Cote d' Ivorie where it was made. An extraordinary bracelet or anklet made from bronze using the old lost wax casting of copper and tin alloy is thought to be from the 19th century conservatively. The condition is exceptional. No damage or repair shows it was clearly a favored old piece remaining unchanged from the t ime of it's acquisition in the 1940's. Pieces such as this served as currency but also as a show of wealth. The minute intricate detail of this piece is most remarkable! Three scorpions adorn it as well as the head of some marvelous character which extends out from the piece itself. It's nose or mouth as well as what appear to be ears hold bars of metal that imply more wealth! Scalloped and detailed half circles line both sides ... moreand appear on the body of the piece along with two whole detailed circles at the neck of the mysterious creatures elongated triangular head which may represent eyes. This design element is typical for Baule jewelry This is certainly worthy of being noted as a collectors piece. The weight is.9 lbs. The measurements are 4" across and 1.5" in height or width. There are 12 photos. To see them all click on the blue arrow at the end of the row of small photos. They thus were valued as currency as well as decoration. This bracelet is thought to be well over 70 years old. It measures 2 3/4" across and from side to side. The wist opening is 1 1/4"

Mende Helmet Mask, Sande Society, Liberia, African Tribal Creations, Bundu, art
An African Tribal Creations gallery Mende Sande Society Bundu Helmet Mask This auction is for a Mende Sande Society Mask. The Mende people are indigenous to Sierra Leone and Liberia. And number nearly 2 million strong. One of the most famous of all African masks, the Mende Sowo helmet masks of the Sande Society are known in African art circles across the world. They are unique due to the fact that in Africa, they are one of and perhaps THE only masks controlled and danced exclusively by women. The Sande society controls the social and political concerns of women in the region, which includes Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia. They are known to practice genital mutilation of their initiates, and are fiercely protective of the secretive nature of the society. Or on and around the head like a helmet, the masks are representations of the idealized female form, and traditionally display a number of symbolic features. The eyes are in a downcast gaze symbolizing modesty, and the facial features are small and centralized, including the eyes, mouth, and nose. Elaborate hairstyling is common, and is finely detailed in this mask. Scarification marks are common, and present on this piece. The dark patina is said to represent female mystery. This mask is a beautiful example, with a very rich, brown-black patina, and finely rendered carving details. The coiffure is exquisite, tall and elegant, crowning in a decorative loop. It demonstrates normal aging signs, and standard dings, rubs, and scratches from wear and handling, but no serious damage, breaks, or repairs. Please examine the photos for details, and never hesitate to ask any questions! The mask is quite dense, and certainly visually impressive. Beautifully carved, and quite intimidating, featuring numerous identifying scarification marks. It has come to us from the Congo region of the Chokwe's territory. The eyes are narrowed to slits as is typical for these masks, which is intended to represent the closed eyes of the deceased. They are pigmented with red, as are the lips, and the pigment has become muddied with age. The mask's hairline is intricately detailed as are the scarification marks that cover much of its surface. The patina is a rich chocolate brown. The piece is in good condition, displaying typical age related wear marks, though it shows few signs of use. It has suffered some damage to the upper right hand side of the coiffure area, but the damage appears to be very old. It is a beautiful example of the pwo mask style. Large and impressive, and will prove to be a beautiful addition to a collection!

Their successful trading and abundant resources caused them to be one of the wealthiest groups in Angola. By 1900 the Chokwe had dismantled the Lunda kingdom altogether. Using guns they had received in trade from the Ovimbundu. Chokwe language and influence then began to dominate northeastern Angola and spread among the Lunda peoples. The Portuguese had virtually no contact with the Chokwe until the 1930s when the Chokwe

African or Polynesian Carved Wood Totem Tiki Table Plant Stand Tribal Art
Welcome! Please note: This is an older item with wear and weathering. Fully intact, but with cracks, spots and variations to the finish/color of the wood. It is an unusual and somewhat bizarre tribal art object and is sold AS-IS, so please ask any questions you may have. With that said. Presenting a primitive tribal carved wood tiki totem table, or totem stand, African or Polynesian in origin. There are no signatures or dates, but it is believed to be mid or earlier 20th century. It is made of carved wood. The limbs and table tops have a sort of weathered beadboard texture to the wood. The skirts on the totem figures look like old twine or hemp. It is quite heavy for its size and measures 30 inches high, 16 1/2 inches wide and 11 inches deep. It has wear and weathering and some cracks to the wood, mostly at the back upper shoulder and neck ... moreareas. There are old, flat, rusted nail heads deep in the surfaces at the back that appear to be connecting the base and table tops to the central totem, plus some sort of old dark"mud" or wood putty around the connecting areas. I am no expert, but it seems that the double totem figure(body and heads) are of one piece, with the base, table surfaces and leg limbs being added and attached. There is a very fierce expression to the facial features of the figures, which have the appearance of protective household tribal gods. TERMS: Your purchase means acceptance of the terms of sale. The Dan, can be clearly seen in the art and culture of the Bassa people, this large ethnic group from central Liberia is clearly a separate culture, with unique art, culture, and language that is entirely their own. With the backbone of their economy resting upon rice production, the Bassa live in a series of relatively small villages that are largely agrarian. Their art production is generally governed by male and female oriented societies, and a variety of masks ... moreand figures are attributed to the culture. Masks are mostly used during ceremonies such as initiation, to entertain esteemed guest, or for community festivities. Figures include maternity figures, ancestor figures, and others, each of which tend toward a similar design with a large head, angular and pointed chin, and a detailed coiffure. Among the most well-known masks from the Bassa people. Is the'Geh-naw' or'gela' mask. These masks are instantly recognizable by their narrow, pointed chin, and long, almost crescent face, generally with a detailed, usually corn-rowed coiffure. These masks are interesting in that they are usually woven into a framework that holds them up and away from the face of the masquerader near the forehead region, hence the commonly applied moniker for them being'forehead masks' Because of this method of use, they generally will not show much, if any, signs of use on the interior surface. The masks are intended to depict a sense of graceful serenity; an almost femininity that is also displayed in the movements of the masquerader while dancing. This mask displays each of these traits, and is quite traditional in design for a Geh-n
Baga Nimba Headdress Mask, African Tribal Creations, art, Guinea, Dumba, Bagga
African Tribal Creations presents. A Baga Nimba Figure Resident to Guinea and Guinea-Bissau. The Baga people are a curious and relatively small ethnic group that reside in a region which floods severely for half of the year. The only method of distance transportion is a dugout canoe, and fishing, as well as marshland agriculture(rice, kola nuts, etc. make up their primary livelihood. A monotheistic people, their only ritual is societal initiation, which occurs only once every twenty four years. Art among the Baga people, as well as tradition, has been significantly depleted and repressed due to the advent of Islam in the region. Their most well-known sculpture, is the Nimba(or Dumba) figure, a large, quasi-humanoid figure that displays a large pair of breasts and a long, narrow, almost equine head with a large nose and human-like facial features. ... moreThe figure stand on four legs and would be hoisted onto the dancer's shoulders, where he would be covered beneath the legs under a skirt of raffia fiber. The figures are produced in a number of sizes, the largest of which are used in fertility ceremonies, especially those timed around agricultural harvest periods. Nimba, in the Baga mythology, is a sort of'Earth mother' called upon for needs of fertility and is representative of the most dignified points of Baga culture. This beautiful Nimba figure is a large domestic size. Meaning a home or shrine sized figure, but not a full sized Nimba(which could often be four to five feet in height, weighing several hundred pounds) It is in beautiful condition, displaying normal age related wear, and is finely detailed, with the numerous linear identifying scarification marks characteristic of these figures. It bears a dark chocolate brown patina, encrusted in several places, which displays the common evidence of age, transport, and exposure, including minor rub marks, scratches, etc. The small spike on the back of the neck has at some point in the past been broken off. This appears to be a very old and minor break. It s

Both immediately recognizable and highly collectible. They can range from very simple to extremely ornate, are finely carved, and one could almost say archetypical of the'African Mask' ideal. Above anything, they are most interesting because of the beliefs that govern their production. The masks are considered highly sacred in the Dan culture, whose distribution ranges from Cote d'Ivoire to Liberia to Guinea. In many African cultures, the ... moremasks are representative of spirits, but in the case of the Dan, the mask IS the spirit, a tangible embodiment of the spirit itself. The energy and existence of these spirits is said to exist deep in the forest where the trees grow tall and dense. There are a variety of Dan face masks, each of which has a different function. They may be an intermediary, who acts between the village and the forest in initiation camps, wherein adolescent boys are segregated from the general population, or may act to work against brush fires during the dry season. They may also be used in pre-war ceremonies, for peace-making ceremonies, or simply for games and entertainment purposes. Well documented among the pantheon of Dan masks. This mahgle mask is one whose style is relatively unique among Dan masks. A mid-sized mask with narrowed eyes. And a ridged forehead found in many Dan masks(especially the Deangle) the mahgle is primarily used in Dan entertainment ceremonies. For which they are well known. The name translates roughly to'bird spirit' and its design represents an anthropomorphized depiction of the Hornbill, a bird considered to be a good omen to the Dan and numerous other West Af

With the Eshira. The Lumbo, the Vili, the Galoa, and the Vungu people, the Punu migrated northwards during the 18th century and settled in the area where they continue to inhabit to this day. They live in independent villages divided into clans and families, and social cohesion is ensured by a society known as moukouji. Its primary role is to regulate community life with regards to social and judicial matters, and mainly it applies itself to the neutralization of evil forces. To this end, officiates of moukoudji utilize a cult kit that includes statuettes, human relics and masks. Punu masks represent idealized female ancestors' faces. African Tribal Creations Gallery presents. An Ashanti Maternity Figure Normal.dotm 0 0 1 154 879 Full Sail 7 1 1079 12.0 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false Numbering nearly 2 million people. The Ashanti, or Asante, of Ghana are a widespread people in the southern portion of the country, and belong to the Akan conglomerate of ethnic groups. Most famous for their elaborate stools, which are carved for each member of the Ashanti society, they are capable craftsman, producing both fine metalwork via the lost wax casting method, and highly detailed woodwork, from maternity figures, to stools, to household items, to their internationally renowned"acua'ba" fertility dolls. The honored deceased are also commemorated with fired ceramic head busts. Once one of the larger pre-colonial empires of West Africa, the Ashanti make up ... morea very large percentage of the population of their region still today. The maternity figure itself is an extremely important form of art produced throughout much of the African continent. And a form of this figure can be found in the majority of art producing ethnic groups. Some are rendered as part animal, some strictly human. Some are produced as clear representations, some are highly abstract. They are carved from wood and cast in metal. To the African woman, motherhood is the single most important role in life. An absolutely outstanding maternity figure. The woman depicted in this piece was incredibly fortunate by African standards, being covered at every angle by children! Bearing the famous circular disc-shaped head of the Acua'ba doll which is characteristically associated with Ashanti fertility motifs, this mother displays the good fortune of having five healthy children, one seated on each knee, one clinging to each leg, and one clutching her back. On the face is depicted a traditionally graceful and serene expression, and she exhibits rings around her neck; indications of fat rolls, a common sign of prosperity among many African nations. Around perimeter of her head

Yoruba Olumeye offering bowl African Tribal Creations Yorba fowl pot Nigeria art
An African Tribal Creations gallery Yoruba Olumeye'Fowl Pot' Hospitality Bowl For a great many in the African art collecting community. This culture need no introduction. The Yoruba people are the largest art producing ethnic group in Africa, and are renowned for their copious forms of artwork. A largely agrarian society, the Yoruba are distributed throughout Nigeria, Togo, and Benin, and number in the range of 12 million people. Their artistic interpretations of people are generally rendered in a realistic style, minus the exaggerated facial features, in contrast with many other African tribes which produce highly stylized, even surrealistic or impressionistic representations of the human form. A highly popular art-producing group among collectors, the Yoruba are known for their numerous and elaborate art forms as much as for their ... morehistory of human sacrifice. Born exclusively from the desire to be hospitable. And fulfilling a purely secular and utilitarian function, the Olumeye bowl is a common artform that would be found in many a Yoruba home, used to store kola nuts for the enjoyment of visitors. The word'Olumeye' can be roughly translated to mean'one who knows honor/respect' and is commonly associated with the depiction of these figures in the kneeling position. The top half of the'chicken' is removable to reveal the reservoir wherein the kola nuts would be stored, and the bird itself is said to represent honor, prosperity, and hospitality, as it could be offered in sacrifice. This bowl is moderately large in stature, dense and heavy, and is beautifully pigmented across most of its surface. Though some of its color has faded with age, it is largely intact, and is one of the finer Olumeye examples we've come across. The figure and bowl are very elegantly carved, with plenty of fine detail, and the top fits nicely onto the bowl, a sign of good original craftsmanship. Upon the woman figure's back a small child has been carved; this maternity element is also common to these

Burkina Faso, Mali, and Ghana, the Senufo are revered among African art collectors, if only for a single mask known as the Kponyungo or Firespitter mask. They are, however, prolific art producers, making a number of exquisite masks and figures, as well as functional items including doors and stools that are beautifully embellished. Minimal hunters and fishers, they are primarily an agrarian society both growing crops and keeping small domesticated livestock. The community is structured around the poro society. To which all adult men belong. This society is responsible for maintaining the religious, artistic, and historical traditions of a lineage, ... moreand it is for this society that the majority of Senufo art is created. Masters of woodwork, the Senufo produce some spectacular functional objects, as well as their beautiful traditional art. Among the Senufo people. Functional objects are often paid special attention, indeed often taking on the same level of artistic merit as the traditional objects for which they are certainly more famous. Chairs and stool are commonly produced and often make integral parts of the home, especially among those in higher standing within the community. This very dense and graceful chair has been produced from a single log, and we are certain that it has seen real world use. The chair was purchased from a family in the Ghana portion of the Senufo's territory. It demonstrates substantial wear, use, and age marks, but is in good condition, largely due to its exceptionally sturdy construction. The chair does not appear to have undergone any breaks or repairs, and is more than capable of holding the weight of an adult man. This is an outstanding example of a functional item from the Senufo people, and will undoubtedly make a remarkable addition to a collection! Dimensions are 28.5" x 14&

Picasso, Modigliani, Deraini, to mention only a few, had collected African art and had been profoundly influenced by it. Shortly afterwards I bought the Baule Fetish and the Baule bobbin which are still two of the finest pieces in my collection. It is easy to see why I bought them and why from that moment I have never stopped collecting. The head of the bobbin or heddle- pulley which is after all only a functional object for the purpose of weaving seemed to me then and today as beautif
