Such Kwadja plates, were commonly found in the 1930s and 1940s among all Kaka peoples of the Upper Donga Valley and were also utilized by the Mambila, who resided on the plateau just north of the Donga River. It was brought to the UK in the 30's by a family member ... morewho was working out there as an anthropologist. The trunk would have probably been used as a ceremonial trunk to keep treasured possessions and cloth in but this[as you can see by the pictures] comes with some very odd items. From research I have done about them. They seem to be Shaman's artifacts. Items which would be used in witchcraft, none of the items have been opened from their wrappings so that their content should be intact and preserved and how they would be intended for use by the Shaman. Some items have been swaddled/mummified in an early hessian type cloth. The trunk is large at 29inches in length x 15 deep x 13 wide and makes a beautiful feature and talking point. The condition of the box is good for its age. The wood shown in the box is from the right hand side of the lid and can be fixed back on easily, it has always been as it is since I have had the box. Inside of the box you can see the tool marks from the construction, with the use of very primitive tools. Part of the front clasp has broken off at some point but again the broken part is still with the box. Some nails have been replaced at some point in its history and some original remain as do the primitive hinges. The box is hand carved with circumpuncts and geometric patterns typical of the regions crafts. The circumpunct signifies the sun and was used a lot by tribal craftsmen[as well as the rest of the world] For overseas shipping please contact me with your postal code before buying. AFRICAN 19TH/20TH CENTURY MATAKAM PEOPLE IRON THROWING KNIFE SWORD
A good example of a 19th/20th Century Matakam People Throwing Knife Sword. These African 19th/20th Century iron throwing knives were carried by the Matakam people of Senegal and are also known to have been used in Cameroon and Nigeria. This particular piece is quite large and is really of sword-like dimensions. It is of heavy iron construction and features incised decoration in places. I would expect that you could be quite devastating if sufficiently skilled at using this unusual weapon. The hide is a blackish brown-colored heavy weight hide featuring concentric rings around the protruding wooden cone or nipple; embellished with interlocking triangular designs in four evenly spaced rings. Out of an old family estate. This is a rare 1800s Zulu spear. It was made for a prince around 10 yrs old. The head is hand hammered and still has some edge to it. I brought this sword to an African art dealer here where I live and this is what I was told about this piece- Based on the crudely forged metal blade and hand guard. This item was made in the 50's The Sheath was made from a lion's pelt The handle was made from real eye-vree This sword would not have been used in battle. It holds a great deal of significance and would be used in tribal ceremonies. Because it was made from the parts of the most powerful animals found on the continent of Africa. This sword would have been used only when a tribe member was raised to chief status or another important tribal position. it is all original. Although I'm not sure what it's made from. The sword measures 21.5 inches by 3.25 inches. The axe measures 15 inches by 7.5 inches. I bought both at an auction recently. The previous owner was a collector of African art and antiquities. I don't know when these were made or the region in Africa they came from. WEST AFRICAN MANDING ISLAMIC SAIF SWORD CA.1800s
This interesting Manding broadsword is mounted with a 84 cm long. 4.5 cm wide Solingen-made blade with three narrow fullers starting at the ricasso and running past the forte. Sword is almost 1 meter long overall. The hilt is wrapped in oiled cloth. Scabbard is wood, covered with three sections of tooled raw-hide and two sections of vellum. Sword dates to the late 19th-early 20th c. Manding swords of this vintage are quite uncommon. Most of the examples encountered on today's market date from the later part of the 20th c. making this sword a desirable piece for a collector of ethnographic weapons. Swords are prominently displayed at royal courts as regalia of the king reflecting his power and authority. Sword bearers precede the king or rest at his feet when he sits in state. During occasions when the king is carried in his litter they rest their sword hilts against the litter. Swords are used to swear oaths to the king and state, and to identify messengers as they carry the king's word while on the king's business. I would guess that it was carried by a senior Sudanese warrior or chieftain and is definitely of 19th Century period. Authentic Antique African( Congo) short sword. Hand hammered blade with etched diamond like pattern on both sides of blade. Hilt& handle are an ebony type of wood- hand carved.Handle carved on top& bottom. I bought this from a son of a chief from the Congo. as well as number of other items) This was made for the chief himself. The Handle has a crack that runs from side to side with some missing pieces of wood. Please look at the photos as they represent the sword accurately) It seems to stay together and I bought this as is. Perhaps a preservationist could work on this or you could keep it as is- displayed. I did) The blade has wear& rust but has a waxlike coating on it as do antique blades of this type. The etching on the fullered blade is great and well worth the sword itself. the carving on the handle is intricate and clear and is on the top and bottom of the handle. The blade is decorated with acid-etched Islamic script that completely covers both sides. The overall length of the sword is 40.40(1.03m) without the scabbard. The hilt décor and scabbard are made of crocodile hide from the Red Sea area. The sword inserts fully into the scabbard, but is tight and not easily removed. The piece is in excellent condition. Here we have one wild looking piece. It is an Executioners Axe of the Nagala Tribe of Central Africa. It is documented in the excellent book" African Weapons" by Werner Fischer and Manfred A. Zirngibl pages 108 to 111. The hilt is carved wood with brass and copper ribbons wound around the grip these are dark from age. There are some chips to the ridges from use and age. Most of these brass-hilted takoubas tend to date from the end of the 19th Century. Outstanding Cast Bronze African Sword Antique Benin Mali Tuareg
An outstanding and very rare find. Circa 1700-1800 antique cast bronze sword attributed to west Africa. Possibly of Tuareg origins. Outstanding craftsmanship and detail and excellent patina. See a very similar example at the following site: The sword is in excellent condition. With only very minimal patina/oxidation. The scabbard has additional green patina. In a couple of small places the oxidation has gone all the way through some of the ornaments(pay particular attention to the shadow cast by the scabbard) but frankly we think this just adds to the great character of the piece. It is rock solid and the blade fits snugly into the scabbard. The entire piece is an impressive 29 inches long. The sword is 25 inches and the scabbard is 17 inches. You are buying a neat old African sword. It measures 31" long by 2&1/4" wide and has double sided sharp blades. It has detailed patterns etched on one side and grooves on the other. Both edges are sharp and under side edge has small teeth for sawing. And I believe this sward could have multiple functions from design. I would estimate from the darkening of steel and design that it is from the turn of the century but could be older. Please see pictures for identification and condition. I could not find any like it to judge its type from and am not sure of any tribe or region it is from. Should make a nice decoration piece or nice addition to any African armor collection. Antique African Art Tribal Ceremonial Sword Vintage Decorative Museum Artifact
I have here a gorgeous antique African tribal sword. I brought this sword to an African art dealer here where I live and this is what I was told about this piece- Based on the crudely forged metal blade and hand guard. This item was made in the 50's The Sheath was made from a lion's pelt The handle was made from real eye-vree This sword would not have been used in battle. It holds a great deal of significance and would be used in tribal ceremonies. Because it was made from the parts of the most powerful animals found on the continent of Africa. This sword would have been used only when a tribe member was raised to chief status or another important tribal position. It is all original. In excellent shape and is beautifully decorative- just notice the hand carving in the handle and the design work on the blade. The handle measures 6" ... morelong and the blade measures 20" long. This piece represents a very rare opportunity to own an item which today would be impossible to purchase. It was made at a time when its components could be used but today.no.
