Superb Mayombe Nkisi"Nail Fetish" Striking authentic fetish featuring enlarged head with encrusted sacrificial material. As characteristic of ... morethe Mayombe fetishes this has an array of nails and blades throughout the body as well as a horn. Wicker cord and varied sacrificial material. The cavity that one day packed the magical ingredients(bilongo) is open after decades of erosion and handling but the glass eyes still intact. As to the age of this figure-in my educated estimate- its should have at least 75 years in civilization plus 20 or 30 more when it was active and commissioned in its village. Certainly the price doesn't reflect the real value of this piece. It measures approximately 27 inches tall. I acquired this Power figure in 1989 at a sort of antique shop at Brussels. Belgium. It was exhibited in a couple of African art exhibitions in community colleges in Southern California. Buyer has 7 days to inspect the piece and may return it if not satisfied. Buyer pays shipping back. It you do have any questions or need more pictures send me a message. Outstanding piece rarely seen on ebay! Absolutely astonishing in person. Watch a short video for a visual description. Thanks. http:www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-0lYq6eN8Q If you have any questions or concerns. Please email me prior to bidding or before listing ends. All payments must be made thru Paypal and must be received 7 days of the purchase. Please note: your purchase is covered under Paypal Buyer Protection Plan in case of loss. All items will be carefully packed and ship thought USPS International bidders please inquire before bidding for shipping costs. I do not clean any items to keep the uniqueness of the piece.

This unique African Wooden Statue is about 12 inches tall and includes a shield. However, I believe it is missing a staff/sword and the wood piece that ... moreholds the shield onto the sculpture. A small wood dowel could be purchased separately at a craft store to attach the sword to the sculpture if desired. Still, it's in really nice condition and the wood feels really solid. See photos.

This type of mask wasn't worn but carried upside down by the beard in Lega Bwami Society ceremonies and then displayed on a type of rack, hanging by the ... morefiber cord on the back. Fantastic patina, white pigment on face with cowrie shell eyes, original beard, feathers and hanging cord. Comes with a steel mount I had custom made for this mask which has a rusty finish (was my preference). Mount could easily be sanded to the bare metal or painted. I have owned this mask since the 1980s. Wooden portion of mask approximately 10" tall x 4 1/2" at widest point. When mounted, the mask stands 19 1/2" tall. Base of mount is 4" square. Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 GJPaw Auctions is pleased to ... moreoffer a stunning Bronze Equestrian Figure from the Dogon people. Mali, West Africa. In Dogon society. Horses were generally considered a luxury reserved for rich or powerful people and horses also occur in Dogon beliefs about the creation of the world, where horse and rider figures are seen as a symbol of a mythological personage. This powerful and evocative example measures 8.75 inches in width by 2.25 inches in depth by 9 inches in height(22.2 cm by 5.7 cm by 22.9 cm) The figure shows wear consistent with the mid-20th century, including rubbing, oxidization and a small amount of rust-like corrosion that are a normal part of the bronze aging process. It would make a fine collector’s piece for anyone interested in Dogon culture or African art in general. In the ancient empires of West Africa. Horses were associated with wealth, kingship, and prestige and represented power in several realms: political, military, legal, and mystical. Some rulers even handed down legal decisions while on horseback. Horses were rare in African empires south of the Sahara, and only kings and their cavalries were allowed to possess them. Archaeological evidence shows that horses were sacrificed and buried with royalty in areas just north of the Niger Delta as early as 1000 A.D. Horses appear in Dogon mythology about the creation of the world and it was the first animal to leave the ark in the descent to earth. Symbolizing its importance in the establishment of Dogon culture. The horse is incorporated into many ceremonial and functional sculptures. And equestrian figures are common in Dogon art, with the bronze figure sharing the long tradition of figurative iron, bronze, and brass casting by blacksmiths in West Africa reaching back to the period of the great Empire of Mali as early as the 12th century. In many West African traditional communities, blacksmiths enjoyed a privileged posit
