Here is an exciting authentic vintage Makonde carved ebony depiction of a very busy and mischievous Shetani having fun at others expense. He is pulling up on the elephant trunk(an explanation of why elephants raise their trunks and make noise) while snacking on a villager with just the leg remaining to eat! This is one of very few actual depictions of a mischievous Shetani in action. There is only one other on ebay to be seen. Like all Makonde carvings. It is carved of one piece of ebony rosewood, not pieced together. Makonde are truely masters of working this extra durable hard wood. The ebony is natural(has NOT been dyed or shoepolished black as is sometimes seen) and shows plenty of grain. Made in Malawi. Bordering both Tanzania and Mozambique- well known lands of the Makonde. Here for sale is an old. Very unique primitive wood carving with Christian symbol crosses, one in the front and another in the back of the head. It was carved by using primitive tools and shown a natural aged patina. I would guess this is a very unique statue carved by native people when they were converted to Christian religion by the christian missionary. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Black African Ebony Wood Carving Statue HEAVY Nearly 3 ft high! Fisherman Smoker
Carved Ebony Wooden Figurine from Africa. At 28" tall this man has a very p e nsive pose and a pertruding belly. Caryying some tools on his hips along with the day's catch of fish. This is one heavy fellow! He stands on a stand that is 7" by 7" and part of the statue- in fact the wood is ONE solid piece. There are three little dots where the varnish seems to have chipped off. I could find no signs of repairs. Weight is 40 lbs. WOW! This is a great find and magnificent art piece!
