This interesting sculpture shares a number of stylistic elements with a number of the small groups living in Northern Nigeria in the region of the confluence of the Niger and Benue Rivers. This is an area of mixed art and influences and shared sculptural styles as documented by Sieber where he notes an Idoma carver observing Igala sculptors at work and subsequently carving for both Igala and Idoma patrons. The Dogon use kneeling figures of nebulous sexuality for a variety of purposes, from effigies of their mythological founders, the"nommo, to ancestor figures, and shrine figures to promote success in childbirth or the harvest. The Dogon, numbering about 250,000, are one of most fascinating cultures in the world. Most Dan fetishes that have female figures are related to fertility and entertainment. This fetish shows some signs of usage and discoloration where it would have been handled around the ends of the eyes around the middle of the head. It has a dent in the forehead. It's age is hard to determine. But based on comparable pieces we have had. We would say it dates to the 1920-1950 period. The piece is 14" tall and she has a metal wire band necklace. I purchased this at an estate auction so I do not know which exact country it is from or its age but believe it to be several years old. The piece is well balanced and stands easily. Especially since there is no base-just her feet. There's some like surface wear to the patina of the wood from handling but no chips, cracks or breaks-I'm just no certain about one toe. Could be a chip on the toe(last photo, foot on the right) or it could have been crafted that way-in any case, it's extremely minor. I don’t know much about the company or what this figurine is made of but from a little research, it seems that they started in business back ... morein 1995 and are still in business making gorgeous figurines. This Handsome African Couple seems to be very much in love. No doubt the beautiful bouquet of yellow flowers that the elegant woman is holding was probably just given to her by her lover. The Colors are warm. The details are absolutely exquisite and the feeling it exudes is absolutely one of warmth, harmony and love I don’t know how old it is. Basically it is in good condition. But there are a few condition issues I’d like to point out. First and most importantly, one end of the tie bow in her headdress has unfortunately been broken off. I don’t imagine that it would be too difficult for even a fairly handy person to configure a new piece for that area. Please see last photo. As pictured and not yet packed. It has good weight, it weighs about 2 pounds, so with careful packing to ensure a safe arrival at your home, the package will probably weigh about 3 pounds. There is minor color rub-off on the Dark Brown round Base. Mainly around the perimeter edges, but not really obvious when looking at the figurine. Authenticated and valued by the Ghana Museum and Affrica Studio. Washington, D.C. This rare ensemble includes a 10 3/4" drummer with original carving and paint and 2 6" drums with original carvings and paint. It is described as a"Fine early work by the most famous and popular Ghanaian artist of the 20th century, Osei Bonsu, 1900-77. Classic example in a style and motif recorded and published in Rattray's Religion and Art in Ashanti, 1927. This is a very attractive hand carved. One of a kind African or similar style statue of a female form with children appearing to climb or cling to her. I thought it could be a fertility statue. It is in very good condition and very well crafted and is carved from very good quality, solid wood and is quite heavy and feels very substantial. There is a lovely deep and rich wood grain that runs through the piece. It measures 36cm high. It stands on a smooth black marble base. It is signed by the artist A. Barye. The process of bringing a bronze sculpture to life using the lost-wax method is something you'll appreciate after taking this tour- ... moreEnjoy. Here Artist original clay sculpture is nearly ready for the foundry. Note the artist is still adding the finishing touches. Most sculptors prefer to work with clay or wax; some however. Do use wood and other mediums. Here the finished original clay is now complete. The sculptor will take it to the foundry now, get a bid then begin the first stages of the lost wax process. The first step can be shocking for some as they begin to decide how this original will be cut up. In order to prepare the original clay sculpture for molding. It will be dissected by cutting the clay with wire and by cutting the armature with a saw. The armature is what helped support the clay in place while the artist was creating it. Note the registration marks which later in the process will serve to realign the parts. Shown here are the sections of the original clay sculpture after having been dissected. Now the various parts of the original are carefully mounted on clay plugs before the rubber mold material is applied. The clay plug later serves as a pour spout for the mold. I found this in a trunk of my traveling Great Aunt and it has been in there since her passing 25+ years ago. I remember this from a shelf in her office. But unfortunitly I did not ask her the history. I know that she was born in 1900 and she traveled around the world many times. She brought back things from everywhere. I know that she visited Africa several times. We talked about it and I so wanted to go with her. This is a striking 11" tall X 2"wide statue, carved from one piece of redish wood and the beard and hair are stained black. I have looked at sites and found nothing like this and unfortunitly there is no marking on it at all. It could be from anywhere in the world, sorry I do not know. I think the photos are fairly clear. Although mechanization has facilitated the lost wax process of bronze casting. I got this handcarved African wood statue from an estate sale in my area don't know the age but it's a very nice piece size is 29 inches high by 11 inches wide by about 1 inch thick there are inlaid shells and looks to be like inlaid copper or brass I'm not really sure if you have any questions feel free to ask me I will be more than happy to answer questions to the best of my ability
