Overall Condition, Fair, Damage/Repair, foot broken with missing toes and chip. age cracks thoughout the figure crack in one foot. Minor old chips in places. Additional Information: A Janus Reliquary Figure(Byeri Figures) from the Fang people(Ntumu Sub-group Northern Fang) Equatorial Guinea. This Janus guardian figure is not often noted among the Fang, although early reports mention male-female reliquary figures on shrines. This is a Very strong sculpture with a lot of presence! As sculpture. These Byeri figures stand out as a fine example of good carving in a later Fang style, and the sculptural detail is testament to the Fang artist who shaped them. Fang memorial sculpture has a long history of use and was in fact photographed as early as 1907(Tessmann 1913/1972, vol. II) However the cult of Byeri began to lose its prominence after 1910 due to colonial government pressure. During migrations which took place in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the Fang people moved to their present area becoming part of a complex overlay of population of approximately 200,000 which stretches from southern Cameroon into Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Living in small forest communities, the Fang focused upon tightly knit kinship and lineage systems. Stressing continuity and relationships, the kinship system was employed to emphasize the veneration of ancestors through the use of figurative sculptures. Each lineage's ancestors were located in family shrines, housing memorials or reliquary boxes known as byeri, containing their bones, under the care of an elder known as the Esa. The ancestors were consulted before any serious event such as hunting, traveling, marriage, war, or planting was undertaken. The Esa, the shrine keeper, was the oldest living member of the clan

Faux Ivory Statue of African Tribesman
A carved faux ivory statue of an African tribesman with a mohawk hairstyle. And wearing a loincloth. Nice color and beautiful cross hatch graining visible on his behind. The statue weighs approximately 2.5 ounces and is 5" tall. The figure apparently had been holding perhaps a spear. It, however, is missing now. No other flaws that I see. Please view my other faux ivory pieces. I will be happy to combine shipping on these items if you purchase more than one of them. Please ask questions if you have them as this item is not returnable. This is an original vintage carved statue of a seated woman nursing an infant. It was hand-crafted in Ghana and is approximately 23" x 10" x 7" in depth. The Ashanti imagery on this statue is indicated by the round and flat face/head as well as the pointy elongated breasts. I'm not certain about the neck and the elongating rings necklaces. My notes only indicate this came from Ghana so any other expertise/suggestions available here on EBAY would be gratefully appreciated. Original African Tribal Art Statue Fertility Goddess Congo Pende nice patination
Wooden statue of a Fertility Goddess which I inherited from a cousin who told me that in his opinion it was made in the early part of the 20th century. However it could be older but I am not an expert in this field. He also told me that it came from a missionary who spent most of his life in Africa. The statue looks original to me. There are traces of white polychromy. at the head. The cuff links and between the legs, whereas red has been used on the chest. There are a few splits of the wood especially at the head, a sign of age which you would not find on a modern copy. There is a hollow in the wood in both legs. A piece of the left foot is missing and there is some damage at the other side of the right leg. The wood looks exotic but I am not sure which wood was used. This auction is for a beautiful African Sculture and in amazing shape. It came from a private estate. It has some age to it although I am not sure how old. It is made out of wood and beautiful. I went over it carefully and did not see any chips or cracks anywhere. It truly is a wonderful piece and has been well cared for. It stands about 11-1/4" tall. It is about 3-1/4" wide by 2-1/4" wide. There are some condition issues with the stature. First the most obvious damage is. A cracked the runs from the base of the right leg almost to the knee, it is still sturdy and in no danger of falling apart however I do want to point it out please see the picture. There are scratches all over it but in my opinion only adds to the character and the age of the peace. I do not know how old it is my best guess would be mid century. This is hand carved and does not sit totally flat it rocks a little back and forth but again in my opinion it only adds to the character the peace. Awesome Huge Carved West African Tribal Ethnic Dance Wooden Mask Statue Figure
This is a huge almost two feet tall awesomely carved African wooden mask. It's in a man's(or woman) face wearing a horned beast head mask. The eyes. Mouth, and the nostril of the face are highlighted with black pigment. The area around the face and throughout the beast head is decorated with small zigzag shark-tooth like marks. The wood is strong and heavy, and has very fine grains, patterns and natural warm color, probably teak wood. The back is hollowed out. Definitely a very impressive piece of tribal art and would make a great hanging decor, given its large size and warm natural wood tone. By attaching a piece of cord, you may even be able to wear it. On special holiday processions, such as The Day of Dead, Mardi Grass, or Halloween, imagine wearing such huge gorgeous mask. It would invite admiration from everyone. At the cost ... moreof a few pizzas, it's a real steal, considering how much labor it takes to design, carve and polish, and it has crossed oceans and continents, and survived decades of the test of time. A great home or office decor! Dimension: approx. 24inches(2ft) in height; 8 inches in width. And 3inches in depth. Weight: heavy teak. About 4lbs. Age: vintage. Origin: Western Africa. It has handwritten words"made in Senegal" on the back side. Condition: Overall very good. Some minor wear. And a small chip in the lower left(see the back picture) which can be seen from the back but is barely noticeable from the front, and a hairline crack along the spot. The mask must have dropped at certain point of time due to improper hanging and it hit the ground at that spot. For such large and heavy mask, I would recommend use of secure harness for hanging. We are offering to you a stunning piece of African Art. This is a large old carved stone figure of a man in museu m c ondition. This stunning figure stands just under 8" tall and is about 2.5" in diameter at the base and the head is about 4.75" deep x 3" wide and he weighs 6.5 pounds. This is a one of a kind handmade signed with the initial M with a possible T attached at the beginning of the M. It is a recent auction acquisition. This is a piece which is made as a one of a kind. There is not another sculpture available just like this one. It is made of green serpentine stone. It is 17" in height and weighs 2 oz short of 17 pounds. I do not know the age but have looked up this type of artwork and this is a synopsis of what I have discovered: Normal 0 Shona Sculpture. Vintage African American Boy Caricature Statue. 6"x6".. Black Memorabilia
Up for sale is this very bizarre statue. It appears to me to be a caricature of a young african american boy. The age and origin of it is a complete mystery. From the style of it I would guess this could be any where from the 1920s to the 1970s. As you can see from the photos it is very well made but it does not have an artist signature. At least not that I can see. It is about 6"x6" and weighs a little over 4lbs. I'm not sure if it is made of plaster or porcelain or some other material. The finish on the outside is very smooth and shiny. If you have any questions please ask. If you recognize what exactly this is.
