This figure portrays a beautiful young woman. A maiden with its firm and firm breasts. The Jonyeleni figure represents the aesthetic ideal of youthful beauty allied to the characterization of an ideal society of order and structure. Thus, this figure is identified as being a"Jonyeleni" a member of the Jo society, a woman's and men's initiation society among the Bamana. Young women will carry sculptures such as this from village to village indicating that they are no longer children but mature women ready and available for marriage. This takes place on a seven year cycle of initiation of boys and girls into this level of Jo Society membership. The sculptures carried by the young women serve as paradigms of beauty and well being reflecting the physical attributes of ideal beauty that the Jonyeleni reflects to others. In some cases, jewelry and clothing would be attached to the figures to enhance their attractiveness. The Baule belong to the Akan peoples who inhabit Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. Three hundred years ago the Baule people migrated westward from Ghana when the Asante rose to power. The tale of how they broke away from the Asante has been preserved in their oral traditions. During the Asante rise to power the Baule queen. Aura Poku, was in direct competition with the current Asante king. When the Asante prevailed, the queen led her people away to the land they now occupy. The male descendant of Aura Poku still lives in the palace she established and is honored by the Baule as their nominal king. Religion includes both ancestor worship and a heirarchy of nature gods. Nature spirits and spirit spouses are often represented in sculpture. Their creator god is Alouroua. Who is never physically represented. Fantastic Antique Carved Wood Statue Sculpture African Woman, Signed,1920, Nice
Here is a beautifully carved dense hardwood sculpture/statue of a young African woman. The origin is most likely European and the period is circa 1920. Which is evident by the headband and bow hair decoration. The carved details of the woman's face, hair, ears and earrings are amazing. It is signed with the carved initials C.R. and the number 29205. She measures 9-1/4" high, with a circumference of 13-3/4" at the round bottom platform and 11-3/4" at mid head level. This antique piece has separating cracks at the back of her head and neck(see photo) with some smaller faint scratch marks on the sides of her face. African Tanzania Hand Carved Statue 2 Adults 2 Children?
There is not a lot I can tell you about this piece. Other then, It is a great Work of Art, I am not familiar with this wood carvings et all, so all I can do is describe it, I am not sure if the two adults are fighting or dancing, all four of them are set on a circle the women or children(I am not sure) are kneeling in between the adults. Both males have different types of weapons and I am not sure if all of the weapons are detachable, but at least two of them are, I didn't try to hard to detach the rest of them. One of the males has a pretty big size crack along his face, I am not sure if it was done on purpose or not, but it actually looks like a Big scar, The detachement between one of the men and the woman/child you should be able to see on picture number 12. African Bronze Antelope Statue 1940's
Here is a large and graceful bronze statue of a grazing antelope. This elegant figure is 14” 35.5cm) long. 8 1/2” 21.5cm) high, 2 1/2” 6.3cm) wide. It was cast in the second quarter of the twentieth century, collected in the 1940's in Ouagadougou, Upper Volta, West Africa and acquired by the seller at a major New York City Gallery in 1976. The antelope is frequently represented in Bobo mask-making and statues; this large and fecund animal is believed to incarnate the powerful forces of fertility and growth. The"Lost-Wax" process was used to cast this calm and peaceful figure. First. Recently rescued from an Estate Auction When it hits ROCK BOTTOM. I rescue. DESCRIPTION- 703: Take a look at this magnificent pair of VINTAGE TRIBAL AFRICAN HUNTERS. They stand tall and proud. One has a thick spear in his hand and the other holds a wooden stick. One appears to be male, one female although they are not a matched set. I rescued them together and never split up families or friends. One is on a pedestal, his color is almost black, but on the back you can see the grain of the wood, very dark. The second that appears female, has a tall head dress on, and metal wire designed for a neck piece and ear rings. Arm positioned up on chest, hand has a hole in palm for another stick or something. This is the way I found it. Stick she is holding has a small split starting in the back. She stands on her feet. FINE FRANKEL ESTATE RELIC_RARE OLD AFRICAN BAMBARA TRIBE STATUE_PURCHASED in 60s This piece is not new. The estate had this piece in storage since 1961 along with 3 other pieces. This figure is quite attractive and shows a nice worn patina with surface imperfections and some damage around the feet as seen in the photos. 18" tall. Mr Frankel of New York City was a notable collector of fine antiquities. I believe this to be one of those quality pieces. Genuine African Stone Statue. 23 inches/58cm Tall This Genuine African Stone Statue stands almost 2ft Tall. It is in decent condition although there are a number of scratches on it and a few fairly minor nicks, most of these are on the rear of it, nothing serious, this statue is varnished so with a little bit of fresh varnish applied over these scratches will pretty much make make them disappear and will then look in great condition again. Statue by the way is unsteady on it's base and really needs to be set on a stone or wood plinth specially made for it. This statue is heavy and weighs approximately 16kg.
