Through research this is dated between the late 19th century and early 20th century. I haven't found another one like this. The smaller statues like this one were used by families to promote fertility. The larger ones were used by tribes to promote fertility amongst the entire tribe. Exhibiting both male and female sexual attributes, hands lay posed on upper thighs, an unusual shape accentuates the back. The exact significance of this piece is not known. However, it may likely be a gesture of prostration. It is common for the dwelling of the founder of the family or clan to be filled with various ancestor fetishes and it is believed that after death the founder of the clan would find in his in the world beyond beside his ancestors. There is a hole on the bottom of the figurine. See pics( is near his knees underneath) and I am not sure what was there originally. There are also body scarations. She is sitting on a carved bench. See photos of the beautiful carving. Her dress is carved and uses natural pigments for color. Her breasts are also nicely carved with nipples in tact. This is an old piece that is in excellent condition. There are no chips or cracks. African art. Tribal art, carved wood statue from bamileke tribe from Cameroon, Many of the arts produced by the bamileke is associated with the royal ceremonies. Most bamileke statues represent the chief. Art objects showed the position of a person it the hierarchy. In a chief's residence one would find ancestral figures and masks, as well as headdresses, bracelets, beaded throne, pipes, necklaces, swords, horns and etc. All of this was used to assert the chief's power. AFRICAN ART, BENALULUA STATUE
Bena lulua. Also known Lulua. Bena lulu settled in the southern part of DRC after migrating there from Western African during the 18th century. Living in small regional chiefdoms, they come together in times of crisis electing a single common leader from the people. Lulua sculpture is elegant and graceful with complex scarification on the neck. Abdomen, face and limbs which recalls old Lulua customs. Most of the carved figures are commissioned for use in religious association concerned with issues of childbirth and human fertility. Lulua carvers are also well known for their carved ancestors figures that carry weapons and shields, representing the ideal warrior known as Mukalenga Wa Nkashaama.
