Additional Information: A Janus Reliquary Figure(Byeri Figures) from the Fang people(Ntumu Sub-group Northern Fang) Equatorial Guinea. This Janus guardian figure is not often noted among the Fang, although early reports mention male-female reliquary figures on shrines. This is a Very strong sculpture with a lot of presence! As sculpture. These Byeri figures stand out as a fine example of good carving in a later Fang style, and the sculptural detail is testament to the Fang artist who shaped them. Fang memorial sculpture has a long history of use and was in fact photographed as early as 1907(Tessmann 1913/1972, vol. II) However the cult of Byeri began to lose its prominence after 1910 due to colonial government pressure. During migrations which took place in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the Fang people moved to their present area becoming part of a complex overlay of population of approximately 200,000 which stretches from southern Cameroon into Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Living in small forest communities, the Fang focused upon tightly knit kinship and lineage systems. Stressing continuity and relationships, the kinship system was employed to emphasize the veneration of ancestors through the use of figurative sculptures. Each lineage's ancestors were located in family shrines, housing memorials or reliquary boxes known as byeri, containing their bones, under the care of an elder known as the Esa. The ancestors were consulted before any serious event such as hunting, traveling, marriage, war, or planting was undertaken. The Esa, the shrine keeper, was the oldest living member of the clan

Fantastic Antique Carved Wood Statue African Woman, Signed Initials,C.1920, Nice
Here is a beautifully carved dense hardwood sculpture/statue of a young African woman. The origin is most likely European and the period is circa 1920. Which is evident by the headband and bow hair decoration. The carved details of the woman's face, hair, ears and earrings are amazing. It is signed with the carved initials C.R. and the number 29205. She measures 9-1/4" high, with a circumference of 13-3/4" at the round bottom platform and 11-3/4" at mid head level. This antique piece has separating cracks at the back of her head and neck(see photo) with some smaller faint scratch marks on the sides of her face. This is a"Gle" or spirit sculpture of the Dan tribe which is located in the Ivory Coast/ Liberia region of Africa. The Dan peoples believe in the spirit forces of two worlds. The world of men. Vintage Handmade African Fertility Doll!! African Art Artifact Statue Figurine
DESCRIPTION I have recently purchased the figurine from a local estate sale. The daughter of the previous owner told me her parents purchased the doll and brought it home from a vacation to Africa in the late 1950's. Unfortunately. The daughter could not recall what tribe the statue has been crafted by but, knew her parents only visited Kenya and Uganda. I did so me internet re search of my own and it looks like it might have been made by the Turkana tribe. The statue stands 4.5 inches tall and 2 inches across. It consists of a wooden body. A loincloth, silver colored metal bands, two red bead eyes and a big m ane of hair. The loincloth is really two separate pieces tied at the waist. The body is in great shape and has a beautiful patina. I am not sure if the nose has been chipped and the wood has begun to age or. If the original artist ... morejust cut a little too deep. Either way it is not noticeable and I managed to get a pretty good photo of what I'm talking about. So please look closel y. The eyes appear to be the same red beads that adorn the loincloth. He is a little cross eyed but I think it a dds character. The hair appears to be died hemp twine bound by a small strap of leather and pierced with a nail that goes into the top of the head. Both loin clothes are made of an unknown animal skin but you can clearly see white hair that is still attached. The front cloth has three strings of beads and cowrie(cowry) shells and is tied around the shoulders. The back loin cloth is a little smaller and tied around the waist. RETURNS Bid with confidence! Interesting depiction of a tribal drummer playing a Djembe drum. The weird thing is the clothes style of the carving looks fairly modern. The figure stands 15 inches tall. It has one small flaw on the top of the head. A touch from a brown magic marker or wood stain can fix easily. I am sure someone worked hard to make it. Odd African Tool Wood Carving Statue Bust Ethnic Culture Possibly Shaman Pherbu?
This is an odd little curio indeed. It is the bust of what I think is a woman's face that tapers to a pointed crown. At first I thought it was just a sculpture but the base is more like a handle for a tool like a wooden pherbu that shamans would use but I cannot be sure about that. I do not believe this item is very old since the maker used push tacks in decorating it. If I had to guess I would date it late 60's early 70's. Now I am not sure what this tool would have been used for but it is interesting. Please see the ruler in the picture to judge its size and determine whether or not this item would be right for you. This is a wonderful. Vintage, ceramic Black Americana African American genie figurine holding a golden bowl. This figurine was probably made in the 1940s by the look of the glaze. The bowl can serve as a small planter or to hold greenery or a few flower buds. The genie figurine stands 9 inches tall and is 3 inches wide at the widest point. The figure is 5 and 1/2 inches deep from front to back. There is a small flea bite on the left side of the bowl which you can see in photos 1 and 6 and I've adjusted the price accordingly. Old tribe used tribal ceremonial carving. Statue, sculpture with beads, African. Great condition. Minor wood loss and wear from age, some wood cracking. It looks old. The wood feels very smooth. 10" high at highest point. Heavy and well made. I recently bought a large collection of African art from somebody that had a really large collection and then a gallery. I have sculptures, masks, statue, carving, figures etc. all the pieces are really well made, some are really old and some are vintage but they were in storage for about 30 years so they are not new. Some have custom made stands, all are high quality artwork, well carved and made from nice heavy, hard and solid woods, all made in different parts of Africa. Makonde is a tribe in Tanzania who are renowned throughout East Africa for their original and often highly fanciful carvings. Authentic Makonde carvings are made from ebony wood. It depicts boys. Men supporting each other in climbing the"tree of life" find out more on the inter net) Check out the detailed intricate hand carving. This beautiful carving has a slightly polished finish showing the natural wood tone. Some figures are shown carrying baskets or other tools. It stands approx. 7.5 inches tall and 5 inches wide The statue is in excellent condition. It has no chips or cracks. It was just used as a display in the hutch.
