29 x 13 x 15 inches This stunning wooden trunk is from the Kuba area of the Congo. Africa. It was brought to the UK in the 30's by a family member ... morewho was working out there as an anthropologist. The trunk would have probably been used as a ceremonial trunk to keep treasured possessions and cloth in but this[as you can see by the pictures] comes with some very odd items. From research I have done about them. They seem to be Shaman's artifacts. Items which would be used in witchcraft, none of the items have been opened from their wrappings so that their content should be intact and preserved and how they would be intended for use by the Shaman. Some items have been swaddled/mummified in an early hessian type cloth. The trunk is large at 29inches in length x 15 deep x 13 wide and makes a beautiful feature and talking point. The condition of the box is good for its age. The wood shown in the box is from the right hand side of the lid and can be fixed back on easily, it has always been as it is since I have had the box. Inside of the box you can see the tool marks from the construction, with the use of very primitive tools. Part of the front clasp has broken off at some point but again the broken part is still with the box. Some nails have been replaced at some point in its history and some original remain as do the primitive hinges. The box is hand carved with circumpuncts and geometric patterns typical of the regions crafts. The circumpunct signifies the sun and was used a lot by tribal craftsmen[as well as the rest of the world] For overseas shipping please contact me with your postal code before buying. Postal charges vary considerably with larger items and I can then get an accurate quote for you. You might find it a lot cheaper!

Old African (Ethiopian) Spear Head (21" long)
A Genuine African Spear Head Mounted on a Wooden Handle. The metal spear is about 13” long and the handle 8” This spear head was purchased in Addis Ababa. Ethiopia about 20 years ago, but it was already old at the time of purchase– this is not a tourist item. Although the spear head is obviously old and quite typical of African and Ethiopian spears. The wooden handle is a bit strange– it is a light colored lathed wood– not at all typical Ethiopian and I suspect was added on later(there is a chip on the bottom of the wooden handle(see picture) The bottom of the wooden handle shows evidence that it was stuck onto something else– probably a longer shaft. A very unusual combination of spear and handle– interesting!

ANTIQUE AFRICAN OROMO LEATHER TRIBAL SHIELD ETHIOPIA WEAPON SPEAR SWORD AXE
GJPaw Auctions is pleased to offer a superior selection of antiques and artifacts with ALL AT NO RESERVE! Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE GJPaw Auctions is pleased to present an authentic Oromo War Shield. Made of thick buffalo hide. The piece is beautifully embossed/tooled with geometrical designs. The shield has a rolled edge and a superb patina from age and use, including one area that clearly protected its user from a mighty blow. The hide is a blackish brown-colored heavy weight hide featuring concentric rings around the protruding wooden cone or nipple; embellished with interlocking triangular designs in four evenly spaced rings. Presumably in representation of the four cardinal directions. A thickly padded leather grip, likely a type of antelope skin, is firmly anchored with heavy leather laces. Special Oromo craftsmen. ... moreKnown as chawa, manufactured these shields from raw materials they obtained from their outcast hunter and potter caste(wata or awada) who lived on the shores of Lake Zwai and subsisted mainly on hunting water buffalo and hippopotamus. The Ethiopians are not tribal but break down into social groups, with the Amhara being the leaders and the Galla representing the populace. There are disagreements among scholars about which groups actually created these shields, but there can be no denying the beauty of the form, design and condition of this outstanding example. The piece measures 21 inches across by 7 inches deep(53.34 cm by 17.18 cm) It was likely used in the war between Italy and Ethiopia. Which occurred from 1895-1896. It comes from a collection of weaponry containing many relics from this conflict. It would make a fabulous addition to any weaponry collection and also displays well as a"modern" art form on the wall. These pieces are now hard to find and increasingly sought after by collectors of African art, weapons collectors, and the professional design community. It would also make the perfect display companion to the large ceremonial battle axe we are also off

AFRICAN IKLWA or IXWA ( Shaka Stabbing Spear )
you are bidding on a very rare african stabbing spear.I bought this ae an old shop more than 50 years ago.I do not claim to be an expert in African items. But from what I have read the average blade is 18 or 19 inches long and even they are hard to find. This blade measures 21 3/8 inches. I think that this spear was probably used by a chief. The total length is 27 1/4 inches. This seems short. I do not know if it was ever shortened. Some articles refer to a blade this long as a show piece. I have not cleaned it in 50 years and there is a small nick out of the blade. You buy it as is. Thanks. I see similar iltems listed from $750 up It may be Zulu or Masai

This particular spear may came from the Basoko compare to some examples housed in the Royal Museum of Central Africa at Tervuren-Belgium. These people have to face inter-ethnic wars and the wild life of the forest and all kind of dangerous animals. For these reasons they have developed a broad range of weapons to protect themselves and also for hunting. In the ancient time, they had also to defend themselves against colonial power. Thus, spears like this served as arms during a warrior and also as an object of high prestige, this last function is the most important today. In some ethnic groups, spears were used as currency in payment of the dowry to the wife's family during a marriage process. For similar piece see Roberto Ballari. Antique African Tribal Hand Carved Wood Effigy Mask & Spear
ITEMS OFFERED AT A LOW"BUY IT NOW" PRICE For your consideration we are offering these two antique African tribal items recently acquired at an antique estate auction and advertised as authentic. I am not an expert on African artifacts so I can not identify what tribe these originated from. Both items have a wonderful aged patina and appear to be genuine. On left is what appears to be a hand carved African effigy mask featuring a lizard above over a likeness of a man below. It is hollowed out on the back and is made of very light wood. The mask has two age cracks in it. One at top and the other on right side. The spear has a crude double edge blade measuring 2 1/4" wide at widest point and 11 3/4" long from point to hammered sheet iron ferrule. The 29" long wood handle is decorated with five woven grass bands and one ... morered vine band. These two antique African tribal items would make great wall décor. Satisfaction guaranteed. Rare African Bakongo NAIL FETISH Statue with lots of character & Spear! non mask
You are bidding on a very nice and rare African Bakongo NAIL FETISH Statue. Personally my favorite, who is looking for a good home. I will ship it with the spear that I added, the metal part is not attached to the rod but slips together fine and will make for easier shipment. I haven't ran across many of these and this one is cool with lots of character. We have been collecting masks and items for many years, and have purchased most of them from two different people. One has a well known gallery and sells on ebay, the other one is a couple who went to Africa every year and brought thousands of dollars in African Art home with them and gave us first option at them in most cases. You will see with the different masks we list that they really stand out and not ordinary masks. Beautiful pieces that will look nice in your home. We did not ... moreplan on having to downsize and sell most our art, so we DON'T have much INFO if any on these. I will list them as where I BELIEVE they came from but IT IS ONLY MY OPINION. Again, they are very nice pieces. This one we believe came from ZAIRE by the Bakongo, D R Congo. Please bid on them for the beauty in the art and how well it is carved! It Measures approximately 16" high x 8" wide x 8" deep, the spear is 27" Good Luck and Happy Biddings! PAYPAL and USA ONLY!

African Sculpture Standing Woman(?) with Spear Tanzania Ebony Hand Carving
Nice estate sale find. This African sculpture stands 15 inches tall and depicts what looks like a woman. She is holding a large spear. Has earrings, is clutching something in her hand that I can't make out, and had receding hair with some sort of headpiece down the middle of her forehead. It is hand carved ebony from Tanzania. The item has miniscule abrasions at the base and the body. It seems it has sat for some time. There is some dust on the sculpture. I have 3 other sculptures being sold individually in case buyers only want one/ do not want to pay for 4. If you're interested in more than 1. Please check my other auctions. Shipping will be combined. Please ask any questions prior to purchasing. So you know what you're getting! The sculptures weigh between 1-2 pounds each. I'm offering a variety of shipping options for ... moreyou to choose the cheapest. If you desire. USPS Priority Mail Regional Box A is not listed, but please check the USPS web site for another affordable option. I can also ship this way to you. Please note- one of the pictures has a sticker that says hand carved in Tanzania. But not all of them have this sticker. Ohio residents add 6.75% sales tax. Thanks!
