For sale is an African shield from the Songye or Luba tribes of the Congo DRC. It is 36" L X 8 1/2" W X 4 1/2" D(or 7" D including the handle) The shield is painted and carved: It is from the late 1800s or early 1900s and has signs of age and use as would be expected. It is in very good condition for its age but does have a piece of wood missing from the back bottom as shown. I have taken photos from all angles so please view them for further information. This is really cool. The shield seems to be covered in some type of animal skin. It measures 10" across. The center ornamentation is missing. The others look like brass. The backside padding and leather straps show age.

The Topoke live between the Congo and Lomami rivers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Shields were often highly decorated noting personal deities as well as ethnic affiliation. Topoke warriors carried shields of this type made of wood. Woven cane and leather. The handle was attached at the back by cane strips that was drilled through the shield and attached to the triangular piece of wood that stretched across the front of the shield at mid-point. Topoke warriors carried sharply pointed forged iron spears that were often used for currency. This is an old example of Topoke shield shows signs of long use and wear. This heavy fighting shield of the early 20th century measures 84cms tall. 31cms wide at the top and just under 23cms at the waist. These steel shield seemed to have gained popularity due to the more robust nature of the earlier hide counterparts. The metal is quite thick and would easily deflect a heavy spear or sword attack. The hammer forged construction and its design is most interesting. One that adopts a medial ridge. Re-curves and forward curves. At widest point it is nearly 24 inches and 14.5" tall(north to south) I don't know the history of it. My title is just a guess. I got it from an outdoor flea market and the vendor did not have any details. It's obviously animal skin and has seen a lot of use. Massive. Heavy, dense wood knobkerrie with two vintage Spear heads Up for auction from part of an African/Swazi/Zulu collection. The spearheads are hand forged wrought iron. The larger one is of older vintage. Both have rust, but this could easily be removed. Club has no(major) cracks, splits, or faults in the timber,a couple of hairline cracks in the top, which are very fine and not deep) but the stick has a few dints, scratches and dings from use. Also the balanced part of the'handle' zone of the shaft is'grubbier' than the rest of the stick which proves use. The shield pictures are not really captivating the true beauty of this shield. The very last picture shows a discrepancy in the top of the shield that looks like a missing piece. Well its not missing its just the way the skin goes down that side. It has the same edge as the rest of the skin along the outer edge. Those holes I assume are just natural. I thought maybe they were peek holes so you could still see the other person or animal while still trying to protect yourself. The first 6 pictures show the natural color of the shield. This African shield is Authentic. And Stunning in its size. Its not one of those massed produced shields. Its sturdy and hard. But note this is not a shield to use now for protection, Its a shield to display because its an antique.

African Amarro Leather Ethiopian Shield Arussi 19th C Omoro Galla Early
From what I've gathered. This shield is considered to be from the Amarro people in what is now Ethiopia. I have also seen it listed as Arussi- Gallo as well as Oromo. These were used from the late 19th to early 20th century. Not being an expert on African shields, this is up to you collectors to determine. After a good deal of research I believe that it is basically identical to several other shields created by these tribal people. Any comments or insights would be greatly appreciated! Here is a description I ran across on the Arusi-Gallo- Oromo people. The Galla. Also called the Oromo, are the largest, most widely dispersed people group in Ethiopia, and are composed of approximately a dozen tribal clusters. Migrating from the Horn of Africa, the Galla, or Oromo, arrived in Ethiopia four centuries ago. In the 1700-1800s they became a ... moreprominent force in Abyssinian(Ethiopian) politics. This shield is made of very thick. Heavy leather and is roughly 25 X 28 inches which I see is larger than most shields of this type. These shields were made of Hippo and or Rhino hide and are extremely well constructed. The face of the shield is in fantastic condition compared to those Ive seen.The whole shield is in essentially pristine shape. Its not all warped or slumped and doesnt have the often seen chunks missing on the edges. The leather is in completely sound condition and you can see that it has always been properly stored. It has beautifully created molded raised areas as well as a nice degree of decorative tooling or embossing.This shield is unusual in that in addition to the the heavy duty handle, which is in superb condition,it also has its complete, and still intact sinew structure that appears to be an" arm stabalizing sling" but I dont know for sure. Again, any info from you experts would be thrilling to get! The length of the dagger is 43cm(17” without its unusual wooden scabbard. This is a very long specimen with a 31 cm. Early, forged blade. The dagger and scabbard have a stylish look with the blade exposed to the eye. The darkened wood on the edge of the scabbard and handle give it a striking appearance. This item would make an interesting display piece. The dagger is in excellent condition with only a small amount of age cracking on the back and side of the scabbard, and a chip on the front of the handle.

Picked this up at an estate sale in Princeton. Definitely not an expert on African arts. Will try to describe as accurately as possible. The shield is about 16 inches across and 27 inches tall. The skin is dark brown with splotches of white(Hyena? Four sets of bars are cut into the skin(6 by 6 and then 8 by 8) The skin showing in the bars is a very light brown and there is a small spot of black in one area. The stick is 50 inches tall and about 3/4 inch thick and will be mailed separately. I have seen some describe it as a cabbage stick? There are some strips of skin nailed to the stick. But barely any fur left on the leather. Metal nails hold the strips to the stick. The back side looks like raw skin. But there is no smell to it. The back shows there are two 6 inch and two 8 inch inserts of the lighter skin all are 2 1/2 inches wide. Heart shaped outer rim, and kaolin white pigment used in initiation ceremonies into the Bwete cult and for their reliquary figures.
