We are one of a very few dealers who have good relations with Grebo villagers. This mask was collected from the village'Bodio' spiritual Chief) It has the classic features of a Grebo Kru Shield mask. But also has the unusual protruding arms as well as the bird beak, making it a Maou mask. Grebo" means"leaping monkey people. a reference to their flight from a former homeland ... morenear the Sahara.Their major economic activity is producing palm oil and palm kernels for export. The culture of the Grebo, a little-known ethnic group inhabiting the coastal region of eastern Liberia and the bordering forestlands, was shaped in a considerable degree by their neighbors to the north, the Kran and Dan. Unlike the other people living in Liberia, and Cote D'Ivoire the Grebo are not structured by the Poro society. Vintage Hand Carved Wood Shield African Borneo ? Scary Face Mask Souvenir Item
I'm not sure where this came from. But it's very cool. It could be a vintage souvenir item brought back from Borneo or Africa, circa mid 20th century. It is not new. It is a beautifully hand carved wooden shield, measuring 26" long and 11" wide and 1.5" deep. The face is kind of scary, with a bone through his nose and scary sharp teeth. The back, which has a handle carved out of the single piece of wood, is delicately carved in a horizontal pattern of wavey lines. This could be hung on the wall or could be used to fend off sword-bearing scary guys. It has a few dings and some white paint scrapes from careless storage. It is not marked. Shipping Priority Mail. Vintage African Cowhide Painted Maasai Tribal Shield& Spear Heads Items are in used condition. The shield measures 11-1/2 inches long by 6-1/2 inches wide. The spear heads are 7-1/2 inches long. My parents brought this back from their trip to Africa in 1968. The cowhide binding is broken at the very bottom of the shield. The spear heads are attached to the back of the shield with wire. The people that are called“Fang” in the geographic or ethnographic literature number 800.000 and constitute a vast mosaic of village communities, established in a large zone of Atlantic equatorial Africa comprising Cameroon, continental equatorial Guinea and nearly the whole north of Gabon, on the right bank of the Ogowe River. Historically the Fang were itinerant, and it is relatively recently that they have settled into this broad area. The migratory existence of the Fang prohibited the creation of ancestral shrines at gravesites. Instead, the remains of the important dead, in the form of the skull and other bones, were carried from place to place in a cylindrical bark box. The great rain forest region where the Fang settled is a plateau ... moreof middle altitude, cut by innumerable waters with falls and rapids rendering navigation for the most part impossible, and with a climate typically equatorial. A small round domed shield carved from dense hard dark wood in a shape reminiscent of Ethiopian bucklers(small shields) Though those are usually made from hide. A leather covered grip is attached. The rim has a crack that begins to extend into the dome by about an inch and there is evidence of an old failed reinforcement at this flaw. The shield is 13 3/4 inches in diameter and has a height of 5 3/4 inches excluding the handle that protrudes just under 3 inches from the plane of the rim of the shield. Lew dated this to the 1940s. In many cultures, shields like this were known as a defensive weapon, used by the warriors during combat. The Chokwe style is recognized by the Mwana pwo mask type carved in relief in the center of the shield. The shield has a wooden handle/ grip in the back. Figural shields in wood like this were not common across the Chokwe region even during the colonial period. This period was characterized by war between different ethnic groups and by the movements of resistance against the colonialism. Wood shields were used by the warriors for their protection during the battle. The Chokwe female mask in the center enhances the protective power of the shield. Mwana pwo depicts a beautiful young woman and represents the female ancesÂtor. Mwana pwo mask appears at the initiation and circumcision ceremonies of young boys(Mukanda) 91043* All content. You are bidding on a Vintage African MASAI Handmade SHIELD. In used condition. Not used much. Solid& sturdy in good shape. The previous owner said it was bought in Africa several years ago. Its hand painted& made of Cow Hide, part of the fur is still on the front hide& laces. The edges have leather lacing, the back has a carved wood handle with rawhide strings.
