TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish The Age of Louis XVI by Alvar ... moreGonzalez Palacios. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 158 pages. Publisher: Paul Hamlyn; 1969) The arts during the reign of Louis XV were a perfect reflection of the exuberant spirit of the times. The leader of this eighteenth century“permissive society” was Madame de Pompadour. The King’s mistress. She had a decisive influence on the arts, as on everything else, giving them, as the author remarks, just that exquisitely graceful and feminine touch which still fascinates us today” This feminine touch is best seen in the asymmetrical swirling lines of the Rococo style which dominated the decorative arts in the first half of the eighteen century. Whorls appeared on the magnificent furniture as lavish ormolu mounts on commodes and writing tables. And on the silver candlesticks and entrée dishes that twist and twirl. Even Boucher’s coy nudes are painted with the same voluptuous contortions. The splendid illustrations bring out the vitality and charm of all the arts; painting. Sculpture, architecture, furniture, porcelain, tapestries and silver; while the author, Alvar Gonzalez-Palacios fills in the fascinating background of the period. CONDITION: Lightly read hardcover in price-clipped dustjacket. Hamlyn/Cameo(1969) 158 pages. Pages are pristine; clean. Crisp, unmutilated, and tightly bound; except that the front and back endpapers show slight age toning/tanning from contact with the dustjacket. Looks like the book was read once or twice, then put on a bookshelf, forgotten. Cloth covers are immaculate. Dustjacket shows mild edge and corner shelfwear including a diagonal one inch tear(neatly mended) at the top edge of the back side. The dustjacket's spine is also somewhat sun-faded, and the inside, lower corner of the front side of the jacket is price-clipped(a tiny corner cut out of the inside flap so the publisher's price no longer shows(as if it was

AFRICAN MAASI WAR SHIELD HANDMADE COW AND ANTELOPE SKIN HAIR 23 X 16 TROPHY ROOM
This is a companion piece to the spear I just listed and as they would have to be shipped separate I have listed them separate. I know very little about them as a good friend who went on a safari brought them back to me as a gift for my trophy room. Alas. I never made it to Africa and over 80 now doubt I will. Made from flint tanned cow hide and antelope hair the red is cow blood and white is some kind of pigment. Hope the buyer gets both as they should go together.

AFRICAN AFRIKA TRIBAL AZANDE ZANDE DRC CONGO SHIELD SCHILDE EX LONG COLLECTION
Zande(or Azande) Shield- Democratic Republic of Congo Early 20th Century. Original Wood. Rattan, vegetal fibers, pigment Length 44in(112cm) Ex-Long Collection. Leicester, England Ex-Auliso Collection. Half Moon Bay, CA, 2003 Exhibited at our local university museum from Jan-Feb. 2010, Cat No. 50-80) Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes. The Zande populate the northern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the southern region of Sudan. Historically noted as extraordinary warriors who mastered militaristic strategy and power. Zande rulers continuously stretched the boundaries of their control by conquering neighboring groups of people. To insure sustainability and order of the region, royal family members and esteemed individuals were assigned to govern newly ... moreobtained territories. Warriors' basketry shields were personal belongings of the utmost importance that offered protection and embodied prestige. As a weapon the shield is designed for optimal function. Built from an oval wood frame it is woven with split rattan cane strong enough to divert oncoming weapons and at the same time light enough to carry for long distances. Its size allows protection for an entire crouching body. The slight convex shape of the shield is pleasing to the eye and is created by a concave grip board attached to the reverse side. The geometric patterning on Zande shields served as unique personal identifications. The use of contrasting black and yellow cane was essential for clearly identifying the warrior who held it. A symbol of pride and dignity, a warrior took great care in maintaining the quality of his shield. This very old shield has a terrific pattern and tight stitching, however, does have some old damage. The missing handle and small puncture above the central design element in this particular shield gives evidence of it being used in battle. Some water marks and rattan stitching loss to the exterior parameter with signs of conservation repai
