This is an authentic knife and extremely rare. Most of the knives that are selling today as Kota are fake some very good fakes some not. So how can I tell? The decoration on the mid section of the blade looking like an eye with a tail towards the tip is not chiseled IN the material but it is RAISED out by removing material from the rest of the blade which would have been a lot of work for the blacksmith. But this is how these old knives were made. Even some authentic knives that are early 20th century do not have this feature. The knife is elegant with beautiful proportions and large being 14-1/2 wide by 11 inches tall. As visible from the pictures it has no handle. It was brought to the UK in the 30's by a family member ... morewho was working out there as an anthropologist. The trunk would have probably been used as a ceremonial trunk to keep treasured possessions and cloth in but this[as you can see by the pictures] comes with some very odd items. From research I have done about them. They seem to be Shaman's artifacts. Items which would be used in witchcraft, none of the items have been opened from their wrappings so that their content should be intact and preserved and how they would be intended for use by the Shaman. Some items have been swaddled/mummified in an early hessian type cloth. The trunk is large at 29inches in length x 15 deep x 13 wide and makes a beautiful feature and talking point. The condition of the box is good for its age. The wood shown in the box is from the right hand side of the lid and can be fixed back on easily, it has always been as it is since I have had the box. Inside of the box you can see the tool marks from the construction, with the use of very primitive tools. Part of the front clasp has broken off at some point but again the broken part is still with the box. Some nails have been replaced at some point in its history and some original remain as do the primitive hinges. The box is hand carved with circumpuncts and geometric patterns typical of the regions crafts. The circumpunct signifies the sun and was used a lot by tribal craftsmen[as well as the rest of the world] For overseas shipping please contact me with your postal code before buying. Old African Knife and Leather Scabbard
My father brought this knife and scabbard back from Africa at the end of WWII. I don't know specifically where in Africa it originated but since WWII it has been in my family. The metal blade has some blotches from rust(please see photos) but is otherwise in good condition and about 6.75" in length. The handle and blade are just shy of 11" in length. The leather on both the knife handle and the scabbard is also in good condition.

This blade is made out of forged iron and shows signs ... moreof long use and old age. Among the Akan knives of different shapes and complexity serve ceremonial. Ritual and political purposes. European visitors commented upon swords as early as the mid-1600's. They are primarily ceremonial and parade swords for they have neither point nor cutting edge. Swords(afena or afenatene) are prominently displayed at royal courts as regalia of the king reflecting his power and authority. Sword bearers precede the king or rest at his feet when he sits in state. During occasions when the king is carried in his litter they rest their sword hilts against the litter. Swords are used to swear oaths to the king and state, and to identify messengers as they carry the king's word while on the king's business. Some swords(akrafena) were to keep the king's soul pure and used for him to swear oaths. Other gilded wooden-handled swords are of this type and if used to swear oaths were known as"nsuafena. When used as badges of office for messengers or envoys they were called"asomfofena. Swords of the nsuafena type are also used by priests during rituals and placed in shrines as objects of veneration. This is a gold handled kings knife from Camaroon. Africa. Made and used by the Bamoun Tribe. I purchased it from the gentleman whom lived and worked in Africa and had purchased it for his collection and is downsizing it. He had it appraised and insured at $1500.00. It is in great condition and has its own stand. The knife measures 24" long and stands 26" on the stand. Beautiful antique Fang sword. Traditional sword of the Fang people from Gabon, this sword is typical by its shape and materials. The wooden Handle is nicely patinated by the years.A little part of the wood on the crossguard was repaired( good job) a small part of wood missed as you can see on the photo. The lanceolate iron blade is engraved on its base, and has a very unusual big large groove in the center, colored black. The two pins of the base plate are present. North African Camel Bone Knife
