It was brought to the UK in the 30's by a family member ... morewho was working out there as an anthropologist. The trunk would have probably been used as a ceremonial trunk to keep treasured possessions and cloth in but this[as you can see by the pictures] comes with some very odd items. From research I have done about them. They seem to be Shaman's artifacts. Items which would be used in witchcraft, none of the items have been opened from their wrappings so that their content should be intact and preserved and how they would be intended for use by the Shaman. Some items have been swaddled/mummified in an early hessian type cloth. The trunk is large at 29inches in length x 15 deep x 13 wide and makes a beautiful feature and talking point. The condition of the box is good for its age. The wood shown in the box is from the right hand side of the lid and can be fixed back on easily, it has always been as it is since I have had the box. Inside of the box you can see the tool marks from the construction, with the use of very primitive tools. Part of the front clasp has broken off at some point but again the broken part is still with the box. Some nails have been replaced at some point in its history and some original remain as do the primitive hinges. The box is hand carved with circumpuncts and geometric patterns typical of the regions crafts. The circumpunct signifies the sun and was used a lot by tribal craftsmen[as well as the rest of the world] For overseas shipping please contact me with your postal code before buying. Antique African Congo Art, Unique Leaf Design Kuba Knife/Dagger - 14" LONG!
A large hand forged leaf shaped late 19 th or early 20th Century Kuba dagger/sword of the Congo in the Central African Republic. The knife measures 14" long and has an 11 1/2" blade that is nearly 3 1/2" wide at its widest point. The blade has some very simple linear tribal designs along the center and has a mottled gray-brown patina overall. There are some areas of light surface oxidation present as well. The wood grip is a stout design and has a wire wrap in center that is somewhat loose. There are a few small chips and several brass tacks around the edges. It is numbered 2470 on the grip end. This is a unique"leaf" dagger that would make an interesting addition to any collection. Such weapons can be found in museums and high end galleries. Additional info: Knives. There are tiny glass beads used for trading and shell money from the Musonga tribe in the Congo. All items were collected around 1890 in various locations in Africa. African Ngala Execution Sword/Knife, Beheading Sword, 2nd Half 19th C
The Ngala. A forest people in Central Africa, living primarily off of farming and fishing, have adapted the Banza throwing knife into a sort of machete often used for executions. It became a symbol of power and was sometimes a ceremonial knife for tribal chieftains. The macabre ritual executions take place with the condemned being staked to the ground in a sitting position, with the head fastened with leather straps to a bent tree branch. This way it was ensured that the victim’s neck would be stretched and at the moment of decapitation the head would be automatically catapulted away. This example has a 20 ½" forged iron blade of typical form with multi-curved cutting surfaces and lugs on the reverse; three short fullers on one side and hatched decoration toward the back edge. Offered here is an antique African dagger with leaf shaped steel blade. Carved wood handle, heavy brass pommel and original tooled leather sheath. It is believed to be a Djibouti Gile dagger as used by the Danakil. Issa and Afar peoples of East Africa. It measures 15 3/4" in length and is in excellent condition as per the photos with very slight play to the crossguard but otherwise tight and sound. This is a hand made African tribal knife or dagger I got from an estate. It was reported that the owners traveled Africa in the 1960's. It is a very attractive peice with fitted matching decoratively tooled black leather handle and sheath or scabbard. Don't be put off by my low seller number as I do have much experience. I have been helping my partner sell estates on Ebay for ten years. I have just started selling estates myself. U p f or auction is this African tribal set of fork. Spoon, and knife. They are carved fr om a dark black hardwood and I believe that th e wo od is ebony. The for k and spoon are not quite 14" in leng th. The knif e is just over 10" The fi gures are dee ply carved a nd are quite distinctive. The knife appe ars to be a wom an while the other t wo are ma le. A ll three have a silve r like twist form ing neck r ings. These are vintage and have a wonderful mellowed look. Primitive African Tribesman's Knife with sheath
Up for auction; Vintage primitive tribesman's knife with sheath. Wooden handle. And the blade measures about 1 1/8" at the widest, and about 9 3/4" overall length. The sheath appears to be Alligator, and has a woven leather loop. This was brought back from Africa in the early 1960's by our family doctor, and given to my Dad as a gift. He told that the big loop was because these natives were very scantily clad, and this was carried around their wrist. This is part of my Dad's estate. Offered here for sale is an authentic antique African knife. That we believe originates from Mali. We have been unable to find an example of a similar knife, but the documentation we received with this piece states that it is an"African Ceremonial Knife- Mali" As can be seen from the photos, the blade has a very broad profile, a bit like a trowel, but is flat, and without any sharpened edges. Any age and use related defects are clearly shown in the pictures. HISTORY: This is a throwing knife or kpinga of the Azande people. Originally of Nubia, an ancient kingdom in the area covering southern Egypt and northern Sudan. Kpinga have three sharp blades of different shapes and this example has small barbs on its flat plate tang. Which might have secured a now-missing handle binding. Even the front edge of the main shaft is sharpened. Such weapons possessed strong cultural significance for the Azande. They were considered‘Court Metal’ That is, weaponry produced only under the patronage of the powerful Avongara clan, and then distributed to the regiments of professional warriors in ... morewartime. During large-scale warfare, full-time regiments were swelled by all able and willing adult males, and in this situation, the kpinga was a powerful symbol marking out the professional soldier from the land army. The knife(including handle) is about 12” long and the holder is 8” This knife was purchased in the tribal regions of the Omo Valley of Ethiopia about 20 years ago. But it was already old at the time of purchase– this is not a tourist item. The primative hand-carved handle of the knife is a hard dark wood(the blade is very slightly loose in the handle) The leather holder is beautifully edged with woven twine and decorated with shells and a wooden hand-carved face. A good example of a 19th/20th Century Matakam People Throwing Knife Sword. These African 19th/20th Century iron throwing knives were carried by the Matakam people of Senegal and are also known to have been used in Cameroon and Nigeria. This particular piece is quite large and is really of sword-like dimensions. It is of heavy iron construction and features incised decoration in places. I would expect that you could be quite devastating if sufficiently skilled at using this unusual weapon. Called a Nyansanye and used in the Kal ceremony of initiation into adulthood, this elaborate iron dagger was also usable as currency. Nicely rusted patina. 12 inches tall by 4 inches wide. 5 ounces in weight. Very elegant.
