The knife has a double-sided blade. The surface shows signs of long use and blade has some oxidation. Weapons from the Luba group are much rarer than those of the Kuba and other cultures. And elaborate knives of this size are much rarer than small ones. This one would have been owned by an important Luba leaders. Possibly a chief and used as an emblem of power rather than as a combat weapon. The history of the Luba can be traced back at least 500 years. And they have dominated much of southern part of the Congo during most of this time span. At the height of their expansion their empire stretched east all the way to Lake Tanganyika. Luba Society is still a large culture, numbering about 1,000,000, and their influence remains significant. Baule, Fante. are world-famous for their beautiful artworks, including wood carvings, textiles and metalwork pieces like their prized cast gold-weights. While their primary medium for metalworking is brass, they also occasionally use bronze and iron. European visitors commented upon swords as early as the mid-1600's. They are primarily ceremonial and parade swords for they have neither point nor cutting edge. Swords(afena or afenatene) are prominently displayed at royal courts as regalia of the king reflecting his power and authority. Sword bearers precede the king or rest at his feet when he sits in state. During occasions when the king is carried in his litter they rest their sword hilts against the litter. African Tribal Knife - Origin Unknown
Up for auction is an authentic African tribal knife. I believe that is originated somewhere in South Africa but was purchased at an antique shop. The owner did not know much about where it came from. The grip is wood(not sure what kind) as is the sheath which does have an adaptation for belt wear oddly enough. As you can see in the second picture I believe there was supposed to be a second knife that went into the sheath but the man who sold it to me knew nothing of that blade. The blade material is unknown but it is nasty sharp whatever the hell it is. African Loop Dagger Niger(?) Knife Spear Sword Axe Vintage Old
This is. To my knowledge, an African loop dagger, from Niger. There is one pictured in Christopher Spring's'African Arms and Armour' on pg. 43. It's similarity lies in the loop handle, and the basic design, the dagger pictured has a much different blade. There are lines incised in the handle on one side only, I can only assume that this is meant to be the top, otherwise they would not be seen. OAL-15 3/4" Handle-3 3/4" Blade-12" Handle inside dimension is 1 1/2" blade width at ricasso is 2 1/8" Blade at the tip is 1/4" Weight is approx. 2 lbs. See above and pictures for condition.
