SINAMO ETHIOPIAN PILLOW AFRICAN HAIR HEADREST GREAT PATINA Type Of Object: HEADREST. Ethnic Group: SINAMO. Country of Origin: ETHIOPIA. Materials: WOOD. ... moreCarved. Approximate Age: 40 years. Dimensions: 6.5" x 5.75" Weight: 12.5 oz; 354 grams; 0.78 lbs Overall Condition: Used. Very Good, some olds chips and dents from use; waxy patina from oily hair Additional Information: A great symetrical headrest. Patina of great use. Ethiopian headrests come in various forms. They are ranged from the simple to elaborately carved artifact. They have abstract shapes. Elegant lines, and are decorated with geometric patterns. Their styles are similar to those found among the other nomadic pastoralists of Uganda, Sudan and Kenya, particularly among Dinka, Maasai, the Karamajong, Rendille, Turkana, Pokot. Ethiopian headrests mostly come from peoples such as the Somali, Gurage, Kambatta, Sidamo, and Arissi. Among these people headrests and stools play a vital role among men. These objects are carefully carved and carried by men everywhere they go. Headrests are used as pillows to help someone to have good sleep. They also used as a comfort to help protect ceremonial coiffure. In some occasions headrests are used as stool. As a personal object, the headrest has become part of the individual. Usually, when the person died, he is buried with his headrest. Sometimes the headrest is passed on to his heir, who would treat it with respect because this wooden piece embodies the spirit of the deceased person. Luba always carve their headrests with great care reflecting the importance of these artifacts to the owner.Headrests like this were personal items used by their owners as pillows to protect their neck and for their comfort while resting or lying on the mat. They were also used to protect their ceremonial coiffure. As François Neyt noted. Symbolically these headrests are the support of life itself. They also prevent bad dreams. The Luba excel at the veneration of feminine beauty and motherhood, and much of their skillfully crafted artworks, like this exquisite headrest, reflect this ideal. The history of the Luba can be traced back at least 500 years. And they have dominated much of southern part of the Congo during most of this time span. At the height of their expansion their empire stretched east all the way to Lake Tanganyika. They are still a large culture, numbering about 1,000,000, and their influence remains significant. Ethiopia, East Africa. The headrest measures 6 inches in width by 3 inches in depth by 7 inches in height(15.24 cm by 7.62 by 17.78 cm) and is carved from a single piece of fine-grained wood known as hagar in Somali or yucub wood. This superb example has an ergonomic look and feel. Such is the beauty of the carving, elliptical lines and polished surfaces. It shows wear consistent with a dating to the 19th century and would make an exceptionally fine addition to any collection of African art. Somali and Boni nomads make use of two types of headrests: one with a single cylindrical supporting column and one with a double column. It appears that the different styles are for men of different status. With the single-columned variety for young men and the double-columned variety, such as the example on offer, reserved for elders; the more elaborate the headrest, the higher the status of its owner. The purpose of headrests is to enable people to sleep without interfering with their complicated coiffure. Although the need to adorn and beautify is inherent in just about every African culture. Coiffures in Ethiopia frequently declare their owner's age, gender, rank and status; and often they are embellished by accoutrements of a religious nature. At this level they are no longer simple hairstyles, but become signs, symbols and potent empowering devices which require protection. The patterns on Somali and Boni headrests probably reflect the Islamic influence in the region. Some scholars interpret the patterns and iconography as a"form of shorthand for a prayer. to ensure God's protection of the sleeper. This is a well used and extremely handsome Afar headrest from Ethiopia. With a luxurious deep patina. Perfe ctly balanced and symmetrical. Carved with ... morea good ey e and extreme care. I know there are many many Ethiopian headrests being sold on eBay. However they are not all the same age or pedigree. Pictures only tell us so much! This isn't a recent ly carved headrest. I guess probably carved in the 1950s or earli er. The years of use between carving and collection has given the headrest a softness you don't always get and glossy deep patina. The dark areas are from where the application of the goat fat has soaked in. Not from burnishing. Height 16cms. Width 13cms. Any questions please ask. good luck

They ... moreare ranged from the simple to elaborately carved artifact. They have abstract shapes. Nice lines, and are sometime decorated with sophisticated geometric patterns. Their styles are similar to these found among the other nomadic people of Uganda, Sudan and Kenya, particularly among the Dinka, Maasai, the Karamajong, Rendille, Turkana, Pokot. Ethiopian headrests mostly come from peoples such as the Somali, Gurage, Kambatta, Sidamo, Oromo, and Arussi. Among these people headrests and stools play a vital role among men. These objects are carefully carved and carried by men everywhere they go. Headrests are used as pillows to help someone to have good sleep. They also used as a comfort to help protect ceremonial coiffure. In some occasions headrests are used as stool. As a personal object. The headrest has become part of the individual. Usually, when the person died, he is buried with his headrest. Sometimes the headrest is passed on to his heir, who would treat it with respect because this wooden piece embodies the spirit of the deceased person. Damage/Repair, repair to upper plateau and one leg-well done, Additional Information: An interesting caryatid stool ... moresupported by an animal with four legs. This is a rare stool made out of backed clay. There are not examples of this type in the literature which is itself l imited. In areas where clay is more accessible than wood it is used in a variety of forms and applications. The origin of this piece is not clear. It was previously attributed to the early Inland Niger River Culture where clay was a predominant sculpture material. Many different objects of undetermined use have come to light over the last two decades from this region. Many of which are finely sculpted. This could be one of them. The thick legs of the animal are similar to those of Shona-Tonga wooden headdresses. Dogon Double Headed Zoomorphic Headrest Mali African

Headrest, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, Wood, Approximate Age, Second half 20th Century, Dimensions, 20.5 inches L. x 10.75 inches H. x 6 inches D. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, old crackin one foot. Chips and scratches Additional Information: A Dogon headrest supported by a carved animal head in each end. The center has three strong feet resting on an oblong base. This headrest is carved in a hard wood and is in good condition besides the shallow crack in one foot. Dogon art is not a single fixed style as has been often characterized in discussions of their sculpture. For the age of Dogon art extends to the past as early as the 12th century and continues to be created in the present with a number of sub-styles measured against ... morethe core of an identifiable Dogon art and style. The Dogon interchange stylistic elements with neighboring groups producing an interesting hybridism in some of their interesting sub-styles. This headrest/stool may reflects an influence that neighboring groups can have on the well defined core of Dogon sculpture. Scholars do not have enough evidences to confirm if the Dogon have produced and used headrests. Number of them state that most of the headrests attributed to the Dogon were carved by the Tellem, an old population who first occupied the Dogon region. A few scholars support that headrests were carved and used by the Dogon, especially by Hogon priests and during burial ceremonies. The heads on this headrest/stool are similar to these found on some Dogon artifacts. Recommended Reading: Laude's AFRICAN ART OF THE DOGON. Men's headrests generally feature a smaller base that makes them somewhat unstable to sleep on. While the rectangular bases of women's headrests are usually more stable. The small, easily unbalanced base has made the headrest an emblem of alertness and the ability to wake to action. Made of sturdy but relatively light ... morewood, the headrests are used on beds and are carried by herdsmen, who also use them to rest while keeping an eye on their herds. Boni shepherds rest while standing on a single leg, with their head lying on the neckrest set on their shoulder. These neckrests symbolize vigilance because since their base is so small, the resting person could not fall asleep without falling over.

ANTIQUE AFRICAN ART BARSHIN HEADREST WOOD BONI SOMALI ETHIOPIA WEST AFRICA
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE GJPaw Auctions is pleased to offer an Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE exquisite Antique Carved Wood Barshin or Headrest created by the Boni or Somali people. Somali and Boni nomads make use of two types of headrests: one with a single cylindrical supporting column and one with a double column. ... moreIt appears that the different styles are for men of different status. GJPaw Auctions has been in the Art business for over 25 years and is now expanding its operation to eBay. Our goal is to bring the same experience and excitement of collecting that we have been de

Very Fine African BaLuba Headrest
Very Fine African BaLuba Headrest This headrest originates from the Luba(Baluba) tribe of Zaire also known as the Democratic Republic of Congo. Headrests were used to preserve elaborate hairstyles. Which were traditional among the Baluba people. Headrests were sometimes called“Seats of Dreams” since the Baluba people believed that their ancestors could communicate with them through dreams. They were also prized possessions of Baluba chiefs and kings and were used mainly by them. This headrest has a beautifully detailed figure that sits upon an antelope. Carved from a single piece of wood it has a waxy dark brown rich patina. There is an old age crack at the base that was there when I acquired it. See photo) This amazing headrest measures 9 inches long across the top and 10 inches tall and would make a great addition to anyone collecting African ... moreculture. Approximate age is 35+ years. I have been collecting many tribal art and antiques for years. Nothing in my collection is the“tourist” type. As with all used items and antiques. Some wear and tear is normal. Small splits. African tribal Luba carved wood caryatid headrest sculpture ethnographic art 09
Luba people. Also called Baluba are a Bantu-speaking people who inhabit a wide area extending throughout much of south-central Congo. Luba headrests are intricately carved, serving as a pillow that is cool and comfortable in their tropical climate, and protecting their elaborate hairstyles by raising the head above the bed. Headrests are items of great personal attachment for the Luba people and were also seen as the seat of dreams. The Luba consider dreams as prophetic, foretelling important events, providing warnings and communicating messages from the other world. This lovely and well used headrest measures 8" wide and 7" tall. Very minor cracks and chips which are to be expected with an item of this age and amount of use and some signs of small repairs.

C397 ) Vintage African Wood Headrest, Simple Carving
C397) Vintage African Wood Headrest. Simple Carving& Painted Accents, Used, Worn I do not know which specific group of people in Africa this came from or how old it is. The estate it came from had things from several various cultures from Africa& even the Pacific. This measures a bit over 12” long by about 2 ½” wide which is bigger than either the top or either base as the top piece does not align with both base pieces. It is almost 5” tall at one end. A bit over 4 ½” at the other end, but about 4 ½” in the middle where one rests his head. The top piece, measuring a bit over 12” by not even 2” at its widest by ½” at its thickest, rests on 2 pillars which appear to be“rectangles” but are actually trapezoids& bowed out at that. Their outside& inside surfaces are stained a dark brown-black, as are the fronts& ... morebacks of the pillars. These, however, have a center vertical rectangle& then a border cut around the rectangle with“diamond” shapes running all the way around with 4 such shapes across the tops& bottoms of each rectangle& 6 or 7 cut vertically. There appeared to be a pattern of the vertical cut shapes, but reversed on each side. There’s an extra cut shape, however, that spoils any pattern I found. There’s a base under both pillars that extends down to where a wider“foot” is shaped on both sides. These are stained the dark color on all outside surfaces. The non-stained natural wood on this object is smooth& has a lovely color. A beautiful example. ~ ~ ~ We charge actual shipping costs only. With no handling fees. Mali: Large Traditional Rare Old Tribal Used African Dogon Headrest.
Mali: Large Traditional Rare Old Tribal Used African Dogon Headrest. Size: 47 cm x 14 cm. AFRICA-art-GALLERY DOGON(DOGO. DOGOM, HABBE, HABE, KADO, KADDO, KIBISI, TOMBO) Mali. Burkina Faso The 400.000 Dogon live 180 miles south of Timbuktu on the cliffs of Bandiagara, which dominate the plains for over 150 miles. They speak approximately 120 dialects, many of which are not mutually comprehensible. At first hunters, now on their small fields they cultivate millet, sorghum, wheat, and onion. The millet is stored in high quadrangular granaries around which they build their houses. Because of the difficult approach to these regions and the aridity of the climate, the Dogon have been isolated and hence were able to conserve their ancient religious habits and ways of making the necessary implements, their carvings. Dogon social and religious organizations ... moreare closely interlinked and out of this arose principal cults. Which accounts for the richness and diversity of Dogon culture and art. The clans are subdivided onto lineages, overseen by the patriarch, guardian of the clan’s ancestral shrine and officiant at the totemic animal cult. Beside this hierarchical system of consanguinity, male and female associations are entrusted with the initiations that take place by age group. Corresponding to groups of newly circumcised or excised boys or girls. The Dogon believe these operations remove the female element from males and vice versa. Circumcision thus creates a wholly male or female person prepared to assume an adult role. The members of an age group owe one another assistance until the day they die. Initiation of boys begins after their circumcision, with the teaching of the myths annotated by drawings and paintings. The young boys will learn the place of humans in nature, society, and the universe. In the Dogon pantheon Amma appears as the original creator of all the forces of the universe and of his descendant Lebe. The god of plant rebirth. Thefirst Dogon primordial ancestors. Called Nommo, were bisexual water gods.
