This is a very nice Vintage Kenyan Turkana Wood Headrest with a tension rope made from animal gut or leather. Approximately 6” tall and 7” across at the ... morebase. The handcrafted wood shows a very nice grain pattern and evidence of age wear. This beautifully sculptural headrest was cherished and used by nomadic tribesmen of Kenya. It has a rich patina as evidence of its dark brown/black color. These surfaces were rubbed with oils, pumices, and other organic materials. Another reason for their dark color was their placement near a smoking fire. Like other headrests, these kept men's ornately coiffured hairstyles while sleeping. The leather strap was used when traveling. This piece is also very sculptural. Please use the photos as reference and ask any questions.

Ethiopia: Tribal used Old African Ethiopian Arussi Headrest. Height: 15 cm and 15 cm Wide. Ethiopian headrests come in various forms. They are ranged ... morefrom the simple to elaborately carved artifact. They have abstract shapes. Nice lines, and are sometime decorated with sophisticated geometric patterns. Their styles are similar to these found among the other nomadic people of Uganda, Sudan and Kenya, particularly among the Dinka, Maasai, the Karamajong, Rendille, Turkana, Pokot. Ethiopian headrests mostly come from peoples such as the Somali, Gurage, Kambatta, Sidamo, Oromo, and Arussi. Among these people headrests and stools play a vital role among men. These objects are carefully carved and carried by men everywhere they go. Headrests are used as pillows to help someone to have good sleep. They also used as a comfort to help protect ceremonial coiffure. In some occasions headrests are used as stool. As a personal object. The headrest has become part of the individual. Usually, when the person died, he is buried with his headrest. Sometimes the headrest is passed on to his heir, who would treat it with respect because this wooden piece embodies the spirit of the deceased person. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, General wear. Legs chipped, Type of Object, artifact. Headrest, Dinka Three-legged Headrest or Low Stool. West Africa Additional Information: Dinka Three-legged headrest stool. The Dinka are a herder Nilotic group which is a group of peoples from the Nile Basin speaking Nilo-Saharan languages. Which are part of the northwestern Congo, Western Ethiopia, Southern Uganda and Kenya, northern Tanzania, and southern Sudan. These groups move according to the seasons from place to place in the search of water and gazing land for good pasturage. The Dinka inhabit the vast savanna of southern Sudan in Africa. Although the Dinka are the largest ethnic group in Sudan, their historical background remains obscured. As far as we know, the Dinka settled in the area around 1800 and often have been often in conflict with their neighboring peoples, such as the Atuot. Their reputation as redoubtable warriors comes from their successfully defense against the Ottoman centuries ago. Being a Valiant warrior is an important value the Dinka transmits to the youth. This value is taught through the initiation of young boys. At the end of the initiation, the boys are presented with a spear, a club and a shield, the equipment of a warrior. The lifestyle of the Dinka is that of the nomad and herders. Today Dinka people raise cattle and practice agriculture. Little is known about their art. However, Dinka personal and body adornments are among the most astonishing on the all continent. The Dinka nomadic lifestyle is reflected in their art. In fact, the Dinka have excelled in the production of small objects, easy to carry. Stools and headrests are among these precious objects. Dinka headrests, also used as a stool or neck rest, are carved from a single piece of yellowish brown wood and consist of thre

Comprising the entire southeastern part of the DRC, as far as Tanganyika and Lake Mweru, is uniform as regards language and culture, but racially mixed. Although the history of the Luba people is one of violence and warfare, their artistic style is characterized by harmonious integration of organically related forms. The splendid artistic achievements of the Luba are due to a felicitous intermingling of different racial and cultural elements, and to the high standards prevailing at the court. Luba arts counts amongst the finest that Africa has to offer. Artists occupied a privileged place in the hierarchy. The Luba artist carried a ceremonial ax on his shoulder. An emblem of prestige and of dignity of his position. Some apprentices would be recruited from among the deformed, who could neither hunt nor be warriors and who were believed to have a close connection.

Ethiopia, East Africa. The headrest measures 6 inches in width by 3 inches in depth by 7 inches in height(15.24 cm by 7.62 by 17.78 cm) and is carved from a single piece of fine-grained wood known as hagar in Somali or yucub wood. This superb example has an ergonomic look and feel. Such is the beauty of the carving, elliptical lines and polished surfaces. It shows wear consistent with a dating to the 19th century and would make an exceptionally fine addition to any collection of African art. Somali and Boni nomads make use of two types of headrests: one with a single cylindrical supporting column and one with a double column. It appears that the different styles are for men of different status. With the single-columned variety for young men and the double-columned variety, such as the example on offer, reserved for elders; the more elaborate the headrest, the higher the status of its owner. The purpose of headrests is to enable people to sleep without interfering with their complicated coiffure. Although the need to adorn and beautify is inherent in just about every African culture. Coiffures in Ethiopia frequently declare their owner's age, gender, rank and status; and often they are embellished by accoutrements of a religious nature. At this level they are no longer simple hairstyles, but become signs, symbols and potent empowering devices which require protection. The patterns on Somali and Boni headrests probably reflect the Islamic influence in the region. Some scholars interpret the patterns and iconography as a"form of shorthand for a prayer. to ensure God's protection of the sleeper. GJPaw Auctions has been in the Art business for over 25 years and is now expanding its operation to eBay. Our goal is to bring the same experience and excitement of collecting that we have been de

BACKGROUND The Dinka are a group of tribes of south Sudan. Inhabiting ... morethe Bahr el Ghazal region of the Nile basin, Jonglei and parts of southern Kordufan and Upper Nile regions. They are mainly agro-pastoral people, relying on cattle herding at riverside camps in the dry season and growing millet(Awuou) and other varieties of grains(rap) in fixed settlements during the rainy season. They number around 1.5 million people, constituting about 4% of the population of the entire country, and constitute the largest ethnic tribe in South Sudan. Dinka, or as they refer to themselves, Muonyjang(singular) and Mounyjieng(plural) are one of the branches of the River Lake Nilotes(mainly sedentary agri-pastoral peoples of East Africa who speak Nilotic languages, including the Nuer and Maasai) They are dark African people, differing markedly from the Arabic speaking ethnic groups inhabiting northern Sudan. Dinka are sometimes noted for their height. The Dinka have no centralised political authority, instead comprising many independent but interlinked clans. Certain of those clans traditionally provide ritual chiefs, known as the"masters of the fishing spear" or"beny bith" Lienhardt 1965) who provide leadership for the entire people and appe

ANTIQUE AFRICAN ART BARSHIN HEADREST WOOD BONI SOMALI ETHIOPIA EAST AFRICA
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 GJPaw Auctions is pleased to offer an exquisite antique Carved Wood Barshin or Headrest from the Boni or Somali people. Ethiopia, East Africa. The headrest measures 6 inches in width by 3 inches in depth by 7 inches in height(15.24 cm by 7.62 by 17.78 cm) and is carved from a single piece of fine-grained wood known as hagar in Somali or yucub wood. Somali and Boni nomads make use of two types of headrests: one with a single cylindrical supporting column and one with a double column. It appears that the different styles are for men of different status. With the single-columned variety for young men and the double-columned variety, such as the example on offer, reserved for elders; the more elaborate the headrest, the higher ... morethe status of its owner. The purpose of headrests is to enable people to sleep without interfering with their complicated coiffure. Although the need to adorn and beautify is inherent in just about every African culture, coiffures in Ethiopia frequently declare their owner's age, gender, rank and status; and often they are embellished by accoutrements of a religious nature. At this level they are no longer simple hairstyles, but become signs, symbols and potent empowering devices which require protection. The patterns on Somali and Boni headrests probably reflect the Islamic influence in the region. Some scholars interpret the patterns and iconography as a"form of shorthand for a prayer, to ensure God's protection of the sleeper. This superb example has an ergonomic look and feel, such is the beauty of the carving, elliptical lines and polished surfaces. It shows wear consistent with a dating to the 19th century and would make an exceptionally fine addition to any collection of African art. GJPaw Auctions has been in the Art business for over 25 years and is now expanding its operation to eBay. Our goal is to bring the same experience and excitement of collecting

Old Tribal Luba Hand Carved African Wooden Headrest - Congo
Greetings. This is a sweet hand carved. Old, wooden African headrest which was tribally made from a single piece of wood by the Luba tribe of the Congo. This is a carved wooden head rest acquired from an estate. I have no idea of the origin or age of the piece. It stands about 8” tall and varies in width from 2 ½” to 4 ½” Has a leather piece in the middle between the legs. Appears to be hand carved from one piece of wood. Is decorated with animal images carved/etched into the wood on the leg sides. It is in nice condition but does have a crack in the wood on the top side from drying out of the wood. Does not appear to be damage from misuse. Very interesting piece to add to a collection. Buyer to pay $8.00 shipping and handling. SHIPPING TO USA ONLY– NO INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING. Hand Carved Wood & Leather African Tribal Headrest Animal Carving Designs
This is a beautiful hand-carved African Headrest. I don't know what region or time period from which it was made. I have no verifiable knowledge or history of this piece; I can only speculate on it. I have seen a similar item that was listed as being from Uganda and another from Kenya. However, I have not fully determined its origin. Looks to be old with all the character that time brings to it. Is wonderfully decorated with etched animals and geometric borders. The solid one-piece carve wood body looks to have a fair amount of patina/oxidation. Raw hide bracing has a little surface wear in areas as is to be expected for an old piece. Measure approximately 7 1/4" tall x 5 5/8" wide x 4 5/8" deep. Look closely at all the photos. As they best describe the item and its condition. If you are only minimally knowledgeable(as ... moream I) please. Bid only based on its charm and appearance. If you are an expert. Then I truly hope this to be a worthy find for your collection. Good luck. And Happy Bidding! Check out my other items! Be sure to add me to your favorites list!

Their styles are similar to these found among the other nomadic pastorals of Uganda, Sudan and Kenya, particularly among Dinka, Maasai, the Karamajong, Rendille, Turkana, Pokot.
