Title, Dan Figural Ceremonial Spoon Wunkirile Liberia African, Type of Object, artifact. Household, Country of Origin, Liberia. Cote d'Ivoire, People, ... moreDan, Materials, Wood. Pigment, nails, vegetal fibers, Approximate Age, Second half twentieth century, Dimensions, 20.75 inches x 5.25 inches Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, crack with repair in one foot. Chips in places, Additional Information: An example of a utilitarian piece taken to the level of art. This is a well-carved spoon with a worn patina. The handle in the form of a female body demonstrates the creativity of the Dan people where this spoon comes from. The Dan are an enormous culture. Spread out over several countries. They continue to produce exemplary art objects even today, from the smallest brass castings to huge hornbill statues standing six feet or more. The Dan are perhaps the most documented of all West African groups, and information and examples of their many art forms can be found in almost all books on West African art. Spoons in the shape of female figures were awarded to women known as wunkirile who had been judged by their peers and elders of their village to be the most generous and hospitable to others of their village quarter. Spoon shaped carvings such as this are best described as feast ladles used by their owner to offer food to others during public feasts. Known as'wunkirmian' this spoon shaped figure incorporates body markings identifying their owner as a woman of the Dan people. The hairstyle and facial markings portray a woman at the height of her beauty and maturity. The personification of positive attributes of women among the Dan people. I have examined this piece and agree with the description. Niangi Batulukisi. PhD. 82694* All content. Including pictures, Copyright Africa Direct Inc. 2006 Add Us To Your Favorite Sellers! You are bidding on a Rare and Old YORUBA PEOPLE Painted Gelede wood Headdress. Decorated with a cowrie shell necklace and animal hair, from Nigeria. The ... morearts of the Yoruba are as numerous as their deities. And many objects are placed on shrines to honor the gods and the ancestors. Beautiful sculpture abounds in wood and brass and the occasional terracotta. Varied masking traditions have resulted in a great diversity of mask forms. Additional important arts include pottery, weaving, beadworking and metalsmithing. The Yoruba claim that they have 401 deities; in truth. There are more than these. The complexity of their cosmology has led Western scholars to compare them to the Ancient Greeks and their impressive pantheon. Yoruba deities are known as orisha, and the high god is Olorun. No organized priesthoods or shrines exist in honor of Olorun, but his spirit is invoked to ask for blessings and to confer thanks. The Yoruba believe that when they die they enter the realm of the ancestors where they still have influence on earth. Annual homage is paid to the grave sites of ones' forbears, and lineage heads are responsible for honoring all deceased members of the lineage through a yearly sacrifice. Maskers(egungun) appear at funerals and are believed to embody the spirit of the deceased person. Other important orishas include Eshu, the trickster; Shango, the god of thunder; and Ogun, the god of iron and modern technology. The Yoruba people reside mainly in Nigeria but are spread across to Benin. Lush forest and Savannah areas surround them. Their origins can be researched back to the end of the first millennium. Yoruba communal functioning is structured around their religious concepts and their related ritualistic societies. Yoruba spiritual devotion is so complete and powerful. That all of their important artworks are dedicated to religious ceremony in one way or another. There are three main Yoruba societies or"egbe" one being the Gelede society. This sect is devoted to Yemoja, the mother of all orisha(

Title, Grebo Mask with Six Tubular Eyes Liberia Type of Object, Mask, Country of Origin, Liberia, People, Grebo, Materials, Wood. Pigment, Approximate ... moreAge, second half 20th century, Dimensions, 13.5 inches H. x 7.5 inches W. Overall Condition, Good.  Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, chips to the back, Additional Information: A well designed mask with face characterized by a long nose. A square mouth, and six tubular eyes. There are minuscule holes in each side of the nose. Traces of kaolin, red and blue pigments can be seen on the surface. Striations on the forehead enhances the beauty of this mask. All details on this mask rare of Grebo style. The Grebo live in southeast Liberia at the border with the Ivory Coast. With the Bassa people on their west and the Bete and We to their east in the Ivory Coast. Grebo masks are best known for their influence on early western modern art being found in the collection of Picasso who obtained a Grebo mask from his dealer Kahnweiler in Paris. There is no doubt as to the influence of the Grebo style mask upon the development of western art for they are a complete example of geometry in sculpture with the flat face, protruding mouth, a triangular nose, and tubular eyes. The startling geometry of this mask is delightful. Little is known about the use of masks among the Grebo other than the fact that they are said to have been worn during wars by leaders as a kind of military costume. The masks were worn by the leaders of a warrior’s age set lead and terrify the enemy. Though not worn for warfare today they are worn at the funeral ceremonies of elders. This mask was worn
