Overall Condition, Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. For some of them, a very gentle HAND washing(NEVER MACHINE, on any setting) in cool water with a very gentle detergent works, but even then, dyes may not be colorfast, and fabric may be less strong than it appears. Additional Information: A beautifully designed cotton hat with fingerlings. Such caps come from the Bamileke people of Cameroon Grasslands. This cap is in excellent condition and can still be worn. In this Cameroon Grasslands region hats are made in wide variety of media such as vegetable fiber. Cotton, and feathers, and in different shapes. Hats are part of prestigious regalia in the Cameroon grasslands. They are worn by men during special ceremonies. It is unimaginable to see a notable in an outfit without his hat. Rather than a simple accessory hat could be an indication of the owner's social rank and status. These sculptural hats are sometimes represented on carved figures. This hat is in good condition. The Grasslands is dominated today by three large cultures: the Bamun. Bamileke, and the Bamenda Tikar. Each village is led by a primary chief, or"Fon. All people in the area are expe

Which is loose. Pende Chief's Beaded Crown Misango African Additional Information: An exquisite piece. Blue and red glass beads over woven grass. This is a beautiful and well done Pende Beaded chief's crown. All the beads are in place. And the symmetry of the designs indicates that the piece was made by a master artist. It takes months to realized such work. Pende's crowns, called Misango, are insignias of title, and nobility. The Pende, Lunda, Yaka, and a few other groups influenced by the Lunda use this king of crown. The original form is based on the Old Lunda models, as the earliest collected examples came from the Lunda, and the style passed on to all the neighboring people under Lunda influence. The horns are supposed to recall the horns of the buffalo. Which is a chiefly male symbol of power. Beads are mainly used to decorate chief’s hats and scepters like this one. Other prestigious objects such as this wand or sceptre were also decorated with beads. They were used by the political leaders and are worn or carried as emblem of authority. Badges of office and insignia of rank. Priests and diviners will also use this special scepter while performing their ritual duties. Sceptres are said to embody powerful spirits. Rare African Tribal Angas Mask Headdress Koro Nigeria w/ Cotton Dangles
Up for offer in a very unusual and rather detailed mask that until very recently was identified as being from the Koro people of Nigeria but now said to be Ngass or Angas in the Plateau State region of north-easter Nigeria. The red arbus seeds(poisonous) were meticulously threaded and attached to the plant fiber structure in rows forming a wonderful overall visual. Cotton-ball dangles add the finishing flourishes. No idea for age or authenticity but I can't imagine this was solely made for the tourist trade on account of the detail and time required to individually sew the seeds into place. In the least a lovely display item. 21" total height. Inc dangles and approx 8" across. No stand. Exquisite African Art - Dan Zoomorphic Ceremonial Headdress Mask
Exquisite African Art- Dan Zoomorphic Ceremonial Headdress Mask African Dan Ceremonial Mask Tribe: Dan Origin: Cote D'ivoire Approx Age: Mid- Late 20 Century Materials: Wood.Bells, feathers, cloth, veg fibre Dimensions cm: 53 tall x 64 wide This was field collected from a village near the St Johns River in Cote D'ivoire. Masks are the most important art form of the Dan. Many of the other forms of sculpture are derived from the mask and what the mask symbolizes. Numerically. More masks are created than any other form of sculpture. Spiritually, masks are perceived to embody the most powerful of spirit forces. Socially, masks are the means of bringing control and order to village life. Masks provide the strongest impressions of a young Dan person's earliest experience, as their importance is reinforced by their presence at all significant ... moreevents. Masks are empowered by the strongest of supernatural spirit forces. Called gle. Like dii, gle inhabit the dark forest, particularly where the trees grow high and dense. Gle long to enter into and participate in the ordered world of the village but, being invisible, cannot until a visible form for each is made. The nature of that form, a mask and complete masquerade ensemble meant to represent the personality of the gle, is seen in a dream. In addition, the gle must reveal its intended function in the dream or that dream is considered useless. The dreamer. Who must be an initiated member of the men's society, reports the dream to the council of elders. They then decide whether the masquerade ensemble should be created for that man to wear and perform. The carver carves the wooden face, and this is accompanied by attire that includes forest materials such as raffia, feathers, and fur. It is believed that each gle has its own personality, character, dance, speech patterns, likes, and dislikes, and it is given a personal name. The wearer of the mask takes on all these characteristics and qualities when he wears the mask ensemble. Having come from the unknown realm

Original material tufts Dimensions cm: 86 tall x 30 wide This is a beautiful example of a traditional style male Chi Wara. It was collected in Mali in 1971 by a German collector. It has very good wear patina especially where it would have been held on to the head and on the horns where it would be picked up. Tji Wara Chi Wara The tji wara society members use a headdress representing. In the form of an antelope, the mythical being who taughtmen how to farm. The word tji means“work” and wara means“animal, thus“working animal. There are antelopes withvertical or horizontal direction of the horns. In the past the purpose of the tji wara association was ... moreto encourage cooperation among all members of the community to ensure a successful crop. In recent time, however, the Bamana concept of tji wara has become associated with the notion of good farmer, and the tji wara masqueraders are regardedas a farming beast. BACKGROUND The Bobo are a Mande speaking people related linguistic4 and culturally to their neighbors to the northwest. The Bamana and Minianka. In the literature on African art they are ofien called the Bobo-Fing, but they call themselves Bobo. They number about 130,000 and live in Burkina Faso and Mali. They are farmers(seseme, sing. sasama) and in fact to be Bobo is to be a farmer. The major food crops are red sorghum, and pearl millet, which are the ancient crops of the traditional Bobo farmer as well asyams, and maize. They grow cotton and peanuts as cash crops. Their largest community is Bobo-Dioulasso, the second city of Burkina Faso, and smaller important communities include Fo, and Kouka in Burkina and Boura in Mali. The Bobo live in compact concentrated village communities of puddled adobe houses. Although they traditionally lived in two storey houses, with the upper floor reserved for the patriarch, few such houses remain as a result of the destruction of many Bobo communities by French artillery directed by Senegalese mercenaries in 1914 during the Bobo uprising against conscription into the French army. Like other peoples in Burkin

The 300.000 Yombe people live in the Lower Zaire River, the region very important in the artistic history of Black Africa. The country that the Yombe inhabit is covered by forest. Primary Yombe social divisions are based on membership in one of nine clans. All clans trace their heritage to Mbaangala who had nine daughters whose names are the same as the clan that each founded. Yombe peoples more readily affiliate with fellow clan members, and each clan has its own set of social and moral rules. Historically the Yombe recognized a supreme chief, but today there are instead localized land chiefs who act as supreme judges and maintain a great deal of religious power. The Yombe are artistically prolific people. Such masks played an integral role in the real-life drama of prosecuting antisocial acts in Yombe communities. In this context, these masks inspired confidence in the divination specialist’s(diphomba’s) ability to dispense justice and install fear in the minds of people with guilty consciences.
