Very nice old Bamum or Bamileke palm wine cup carved from horn with a brass finial depicting a chief with bi-lobed headdress. The carving on the horn ... moreis really expert with an unusual detail in that one lizard is carved underneath so it appears to be standing on the horn. The designs include stylized frogs, spiders, lizards, and a human face. Serene expression on the brass finial with a casting flaw on one lobe of the headdress. The "mud" that holds the horn in the finial has been repaired but the horn is still firmly attached to the finial. Great patina overall. Exquisite African Art- Old Large Bamana Male Chi Wara Tji Wara headdress Mask Bamana Male Chi Wara Tji Wara headdress Mask Tribe: Bamana Origin: Mali Approx Age: Early to Mid 20C Materials: Wood. Original material tufts Dimensions cm: 86 tall x 30 wide This is a beautiful example of a traditional style male Chi Wara. It was collected in Mali in 1971 by a German collector. It has very good wear patina especially where it would have been held on to the head and on the horns where it would be picked up. Tji Wara Chi Wara The tji wara society members use a headdress representing. In the form of an antelope, the mythical being who taughtmen how to farm. The word tji means“work” and wara means“animal, thus“working animal. There are antelopes withvertical or horizontal direction of the horns. In the past the purpose of the tji wara association was ... moreto encourage cooperation among all members of the community to ensure a successful crop. In recent time, however, the Bamana concept of tji wara has become associated with the notion of good farmer, and the tji wara masqueraders are regardedas a farming beast. The Bambara sponsor farming contests where the tji wara masqueraders perform. Always performing together in a male and female pair, the coupling of the antelope masqueraders speaks of fertility and agricultural abundance. According to one interpretation. The male antelope represents the sun and the female the earth. The antelope imagery of the carved headdress was inspired by a Bamana myth that recounts the story of a mythical beast(half antelope andhalf human) who introduced agriculture to the Bamana people. The dance performed by the masqueraders mimes the movements of the antelope. Antelope headdress in the vertical style, found in eastern Bamana territory, have a pair of upright horns. The male antelopes are decorated with a mane consisting of rows of openwork zigzag patterns and gracefully curved horns, while the female antelope supports baby antelopes on their back and have straight horns. The dancers appea

African Cowrie Shell Gourd Helmet with Horn on Top This is an African gourd helmet that is stitched all over with cowrie shells in rows with an animal horn on top. The rim of this helmet is leather. As is the chin strap and long dangling panels that are embellished with shells. The top horn is about 5 ½” long. And the two side panels, and the back panel, are 14” long. The shells are sewn onto a heavy cotton material that covers the gourd on top. According to my research. This helmet is from Africa. Cowrie shells came originally from the Maldive Islands in the Indian Ocean. They were used as currency in many areas of West Africa. Cowrie shells were also used as decoration on precious objects in Africa to symbolize wealth and position. There are some examples of these helmets in museums. Old African Tribal Art CHOKWE FEMALE (PWO) MASK *RARE HEADDRESS
Date: 19th- early 20th century Geography: Angola. Xassenge region. Culture: Chokwe peoples. Medium: Wood. Vegetal fibers. Dimension: H. 10 5/8 x W. 7 in. Classification: Wood-Sculpture Wood. Braided and netted raffia headdress; Masoji-scarification marks in form of tears below each eye. Tshingelyengelye-cruciform mark with circular term. Cingelyengelye: triangular marks on the centre of the forehead representing the Chokwe creator god. Nzambi. Mitelumuna: carved on the forehead and extending to the temples. Denoting‘knitted eyebrows’ to show arrogance or dissatisfaction. Masoji: vertical marks carved under the eyes. Denoting tears. Kapile: patterns on the chin. This work is an outstanding example of Pwo. A classic Chokwe mask genre that honors founding female ancestors. Such representations are especially significant given that the Chokwe ... moretrace descent through their mothers' lines. Pwo's joint performance with her male counterpart, Cihongo, brings fertility and prosperity to a community. Inscribed motifs on the mask's forehead and cheeks are classic graphic designs that aesthetically enhanced a woman's beauty in past generations and were signs of ethnic identity. The central cruciform on the forehead has been interpreted as a cosmogram. Chokwe masks are often performed at the celebrations that mark the completion of initiation into adulthood. That occasion also marks the dissolution of the bonds of intimacy between mothers and their sons. The pride and sorrow that event represents for Chokwe women is alluded to by the tear motif. The oglinye society groups together the royal lineage, which have the right to own the masks. The Idoma give their ancestors an important place in daily life. The resurrection of the dead is an important element of their religion and the cult of the spirits of nature, Anjenu, is celebrated through the mediation of figures preserved in shrines. Exceptional Dan Deangle Mask With Headdress Liberia Cote d'Ivoire Guinea African
Dan masks are considered a real treasure in African art. Both immediately recognizable and highly collectible. They can range from very simple to extremely ornate, are finely carved, and one could almost say archetypical of the'African Mask' ideal. Above anything, they are most interesting because of the beliefs that govern their production. The masks are considered highly sacred in the Dan culture, whose distribution ranges from Cote d'Ivoire to Liberia to Guinea. In many African cultures, the masks are representative of spirits, but in the case of the Dan, the mask IS the spirit, a tangible embodiment of the spirit itself. There are a variety of Dan face masks, each of which has a different function. They may be an intermediary, who acts between the village and the forest in initiation camps, wherein adolescent boys are segregated ... morefrom the general population, or may act to work against brush fires during the dry season. They may also be used in pre-war ceremonies, for peace-making ceremonies, or simply for games and entertainment purposes. The visage of feminine beauty and grace, and indeed the archetype of the Dan ideal of femininity itself, the Deangle mask is a well documented one in the pantheon of Dan art. Characterized by an ovoid face, occasionally displaying a coiffure, and with narrowed, often downturned eyes, pursed lips, and a bulged forehead that frequently exhibits a pronounced vertical ridge. This mask displays all of the traditional characteristics, as well as a full headdress; the masqueraders head fits beneath this and behind the mask in a well-designed enclosure, thus fully concealing their identity. Its patina is a dark chocolate brown, while eye region has been pigmented with kaolin(traditionally white, but here stained from time and exposure to the indigenous reddish earth and the dust that it produces, especially during ceremony) and the nose and lower regions are pigmented with a deep clay-red coloration. Age, exposure, and handling related marks are in evidence, including sma

The elaborate Punu hairstyles suggest that the wearer is wealthy as her hair has not been flattened by the need to carry goods.
Bamana Janus-faced Headdress Puppet Mali African SALE WAS $350.00
Title, Bamana Janus-faced Headdress/Puppet Mali African, Type of Object, Headdress, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Bamana, Materials, Wood. Pigment, cotton threads, beads, Approximate Age, Second Half 20th Century, Dimensions, 29.75 inches x 6.5 inches W. x 8.25 inches D. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, cracks at base. Chipd and wear in places, Additional Information: A dance headdress carried by an elder during"Guan" festivals. It is sometimes known as a Merenkun. In Bamana language Merenkun served as a puppet used for the dances organized during the initiation rites. Among the Bamana people of Mali. Puppets appear in villages on stages, where they represent various typecast characters living in the village and that we have all experienced. The puppets known as Merenkun will satirize social and personal behavior of the ... morebraggart, the loose woman, the miser and the foreigner. Puppets often have arms or movable parts and will be covered in clothing and will be accompanied by songs that paraphrase the movements of the puppets as they make social comments upon the excessive behavior of their subjects. They often have two faces. Janus –like, that can be rotated and will represent different characters. The artistic diversity of the Bamana is without doubt one of the most astounding. And confounding, of all West African groups. It is interesting that perhaps their closest rivals in complexity are their neighbors to the north and east, the Dogon, with whom they share certain stylistic similarities. Complex religious, funerary, initiation, and agricultural rites have resulted in an enormous pantheon of ritual objects. When collectors think of Bamana, the image of a"chi wara" often leaps to mind, the well-known are the"ntomo" masks, with their numerous vertical projections on the top of the head, the"boli" zoomorphic figures, bizarre creations which begin with small wooden carvings and are"built-up" over time by liberal applications of dirt, which has been

AFRICAN TRIBAL HEADDRESS GLASS BEADS, COWRY SHELL, KUBA PEOPLE of the MUSHENGE

This excellent carved wooden dance mask with rafia head cover is from the Chokwe(also called Tchokwe) tribe who occupy portions of current day Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The mask represents the ideal mother and woman. The facial scarifications are believed to spread fertility wherever it is presented. Perhaps that is why the dancer wearing the mask is always male! African Art Collection - 3 Drums, Dolls, Headdress, Masks, Fertility Items, Etc
This is a collection of authentic African pieces that I've had for a very long time. It was collected from various African tribes long ago. There are 23 pieces in all. And all authentic. The collection includes. two Congo drums and one Chokwe drum. each about 3 feet tall more or less) 5 wooden masks(Chokwe, I believe) a brass and wood Bakota Reliquary Guardian(placed in a grave to protect the dead) an African helmet mask with raffia straw, a Medicine Pot with lid(has a prominent crack) four African beaded children's dolls(used by tribes to teach children about anatomy) a very old African headdress with buttons and long raffia hair, and 7 fertility belly masks. The items are carved of native wood. Some have beads, straw and/or raffia. A number of the items have a crack or a wood chip, as you often see in native African wooden items. ... moreA number of years ago, I asked an African art expert from the Houston Museum District to appraise the collection, which he did at just over $35,000. At this point, it's time for me to retire and severely downsize. For this reason, I'm starting this auction very low with no reserve. Since eBay limits the number of photos I can post. What you see is just a sampling of the items. I'm more than happy to send more photos to you if you wish to see anything more closely. Please ask any questions that you have. I would prefer that this collection be picked up by the buyer but I will fully cooperate with your shipper if you want to have it shipped.

Vintage 28" Tall Metal Sculpture of an African Woman's Head and Headdress Black
I am selling this for a friend who bought a condo in FL completely furnished with Mid Century Modern decor and furniture. Mid Century is not her style. I have searched high and low to find a comparable item but can find nothing even remotely similar. It seems to be a very thin metal filled with a dense material that gives it a lot of weight and strength. The piece has a faint T and M on the back. Looking at the base of her skull in the picture that shows the initials I can see a very faint signature. I can't read it even with a loupe. But I tried a rubbing and it looks like RL with a 1 on top of the initials. The base seems to be a heavy type of acrylic like material and has a faint musty odor but only when the bottom is exposed- not when it is standing up. The piece itself is black with a slight sheen. The apartment was filled with high ... moreend Saarinen, Knoll and Mies van der Rohe pieces along with tons of teak furniture so I believe this sculpture to be no cheap knock-off. Unfortunately I can not verify a maker to attribute it. Should you choose to buy this lovely African sculpture, it will definitely be a statement piece.
