Zulu women wear wide hats like this one to proclaim their married status. The hat is based on a hairstyle that married Zulu women wore in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Initially, Zulu women shaved their heads, leaving a tuft of hair that they covered with fat and ochre. Later they grew the tuft into a truncated cone, wove other materials into the hair and covered their hair with fat and ochre. By the turn of the century a woven hat that to this day is usually worn on special occasions replaced the cone-shaped hairstyle. They are made using a circular basketry frame over which a cotton cloth is stretched and knotted at the top. Overstitching the cloth produced the ... moreconcentric circles that begin at the top of the hat and continue over the sides. A cloth band was sewn to the rim. This superb example measures 10 inches in diameter by 3.25 inches in height(25.4 cm by 8.25 cm) The hat shows wear consistent with use and a dating to the late 20th century. THIS AFRICAN MALE DOLL/FIGURINE WAS PURCHASED AT AN AFRICAN FAIR(USA) AND SOLD AS HOMEMADE AND AUTHENTIC. HE IS DASHING IN A KENTE CLOTH PATTERN DASHIKI. NECK SCARF AND TALL HAT. I'M UNSURE. BUT IT SEEMS THAT HE IS PLAYING AN AFRICAN ANTIQUE MUSICAL INSTRUMENT/ DRUM LIKE? HIS CLOTHING IS SEWED ON. SO NOT REMOVABLE. HE HAS A BUILT-IN WIRE FRAME AND BASE THAT ALLOWS HIM TO STAND INDEPENDENTLY. CONDITION- GOOD. CLEAN AND NO DAMAGE. NOTE- HIS FACIAL COLORING IS DARK BROWN. I HAD DIFFICULTY FILMING IT. CONSISTENTLY.

South Pacific" This photo measures 8 inches across by 9.75 inches high. It comes in a wood frame with a glass dust-cover and paper mat. It has some buckling near the right edge, but otherwise very good condition. The wood frame has some wear on it as well. Low opening bid, and no reserve. Mechanical African Vaudeville Performer Liquor Bottle Stopper Vintage Tips Hat
Vintage mechanical bottle stopper. Carved wood and cork stopper. When you pull the string on back, his arm lifts his hat way out and he tips his head. Brings to mind a vaudeville performer thanking the audience for applause. A great party conversation piece. I'm selling this for a friend who purchased it in Germany in the early 1950's. And consider it in very good condition for age. It is not marked by maker. There is a small mark on head under hat and the cork shows signs of use. The mechanical part where he lifts and and tips his head works well, but to get hat back on head, I needed to jiggle it a bit. Please see all 5 photos. Thank you!
