This is a beautiful and well done Pende Beaded chief's crown. All the beads are in place. And the symmetry of the designs indicates that the piece was made by a master artist. It takes months to realized such work. Pende's crowns, called Misango, are insignias of title, and nobility. The Pende, Lunda, Yaka, and a few other groups influenced by the Lunda use this king of crown.The original form is based on the Old Lunda models, as the earliest collected examples came from the Lunda, and the style passed on to all the neighboring people under Lunda influence. This is a beautiful and well done Pende Beaded chief's crown. All the beads are in place. And the symmetry of the designs indicates that the piece was made by a master artist. It takes months to realized such work. Pende's crowns, called Misango, are insignias of title, and nobility. The Pende, Lunda, Yaka, and a few other groups influenced by the Lunda use this king of crown.The original form is based on the Old Lunda models, as the earliest collected examples came from the Lunda, and the style passed on to all the neighboring people under Lunda influence. The horns are supposed to recall the horns of the buffalo. Which is a chiefly male symbol of power. Beads are mainly used to decorate chiefâs hats and scepters like this one. soapstone seated african figure-w/ a fulani hat -blind Dogon elder Ogotemmêli?
Now here is a heavy soapstone sculpture weighing 1 3/4" and it appears African in design. He measures 7" tall and about 2 1/2" wide. It scratches easily as does most soapstone. Hence the light specs in the pictures. If you rub oil on it they go away. Brown shoe polish works well too and it will polish up nicely. Most African Soapstone is carved in Kenya. It is called the Kisii from the Kisii region of Kenya. The hat appears to be straw otherwise known as a fulani hat which is worn by the Fula people or Fulani or Fulbe- the largest migratory ethnic group in the world. However the piece here may depict the blind Dogon elder Ogotemmêli who taught the main symbols of the Dogon religion to the French anthropologist Marcel Griaule in October 1946. Griaule had lived amongst the Dogon people for fifteen years before this meeting ... morewith Ogotemmêli had taken place. Ogotemmêli taught Griaule the religious stories in the same way that Ogotemmêli had learned them from his father and grandfather; instruction which he had learned over the course of more than twenty years. What makes the record so important from a historical perspective is that the Dogon people were still living in their oral culture at the time their religion was recorded. They were one of the last people in Africa to lose their independence and come under French rule. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Additional Information: The Bamileke are among the artistic elite of the Cameroon Grasslands area. They are ruled by kings. And many of their masks are for royal festivities. This special headdress is made of bird feathers and has its own built-in self storage capacity. As the entire headdress can be turned inside out, with the feathers protected by inverted fiber cap. When not in use, the hat can be stored in this manner, protecting all but the tips of the feathers from deterioration(See pictures) This type of headdress is not limited to the Bamileke; it has long been used among the Tikar, Babanki etc. The feathers come from the type of birds widespread in the region and the most symbolic ones in the context of these cultures. They use dried feathers they put together in sewing them. They build the base with vegetable fibers. Additional Information: A wonderful helmet mask from the Kuba group in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The hairline is sharply carved as well as the eyebrows. The face has human features including the eyes in coffee bean shape and a large nose. As well as a circular mouth and small C-shaped ears. The head is decorated with a beaded cap as those worn by the King and his dignitaries. This hat is adorned with beads, cowrie shells arranged with typical Kuba designs and symbols. The hat is also decorated with feathers. The painted lines on the face are worn off. The base is surrounded by raffia fibers and embellished with glass beads and cowrie shells. There is a seated figure carved in relief in the back of the head.
