This is a beautiful and well done Pende Beaded chief's crown. All the beads are in place. And the symmetry of the designs indicates that the piece was made by a master artist. It takes months to realized such work. Pende's crowns, called Misango, are insignias of title, and nobility. The Pende, Lunda, Yaka, and a few other groups influenced by the Lunda use this king of crown.The original form is based on the Old Lunda models, as the earliest collected examples came from the Lunda, and the style passed on to all the neighboring people under Lunda influence. The horns are supposed to recall the horns of the buffalo. Which is a chiefly male symbol of power. Beads are mainly used to decorate chiefâs hats and scepters like this one. And called twool by the Kuba. When the Tukula is carved like this example, the Kuba named it Mbwoongitwool. Mbwoongitwool comes in various forms, human figures, animal, knifes, and geometric like this one. The surface of tukula is decorated with geometric motifs and sometimes with holes. These motifs are presented with a certain symmetry. Mbwoongitwool are made by women from the mixture of red power with oil and sand and dried in the sun or fire. One can see traces of smoke on the surface of this piece which means that the piece was fired. Mbwoongitwool were used as commemorative objects placed under the head of the deceased or in the grave. They were distributed as amulets to those present at the burial. Presented in this form, Mbwoongitwool were also used as money and served in the exchanges including in matrimonial transactions. The Tukula. Red powder is made of ground camwood three(Baphia Nitida) In this society, the red powder has always been an indispensable cosmetic and ritual item.According to the Kuba, tukula has magic and positive powers. Usually, Tukula is mixed with other ingredients such as the palm oil and mainly used by women and children as a cosmetic product for beauty. This rigid basket is made by the Mbundu women. Who fled Angola for Zimbabwe, and continued to make their traditional rigid baskets from the root of the makenge plant, which is found along the Zambezi river as well as in their traditional homes in Angola. They are traditionally given as a wedding gift, and are used and repaired, sometimes for generations. This large flat basket was used in kitchen preparations. Damage/Repair, some variation in color of dyed feathers, Additional Information: The Bamileke are among the artistic elite of the Cameroon Grasslands area. They are ruled by kings. And many of their masks are for royal festivities. This special headdress is made of bird feathers and has its own built-in self storage capacity. As the entire headdress can be turned inside out, with the feathers protected by inverted fiber cap. When not in use, the hat can be stored in this manner, protecting all but the tips of the feathers from deterioration(See pictures) This type of headdress is not limited to the Bamileke; it has long been used among the Tikar, Babanki etc. The feathers come from the type of birds widespread in the region and the most symbolic ones in the context of these cultures. A thickly woven rain hat worn by women of Lugbara and Mangbetu tribes. Congo and Uganda. Extraordinary, tight weaving, as complex as any basket with a rounded knobbed crown at top. Covered with beeswax for waterproofing. This hat was worn by a mother who placed her small child under the protruding back for protection from the sun and elements. According to African Forms, Marc Ginsberg, 2000, these hats may have also been used in initation rites and reflect the influence of neighboring pygmy forest dwellers who fabricate similar headgear out of folded leaves as protecton against rain. 619) This African Beaded Hat is an antique Yoruba Cerimonial beaded Crown fro Cameroon. It was used in Africa and Southwester Nigeria as part of a coming of age ceremony for a young boy. It is made up of thousands of colorful blue. Black, red, yellow, green, white and other colored seed beads. It has faces on the hat which are 3 dimensional. There is a beaded bird on the top. It is in excellent vintage condition. There are a couple of strings of beads that hang down that are missing. It has some discoloration in between the beads. This is a museum quality ethnic African item. The heavy metal stand goes with it. The hat just sits on it. The hat is 16 1/4" from top of bird to bottom of hat. It is 7 1/2" in diameter. Up for offer is a traditional and ceremonially used headdress hat from the Uganda-region of Africa. Specifically the Karamojong people. The framework-body is human hair with remnants of the original dyed mud decoration. The coils would've held large ostrich feathers while the back spring would've head something more ranking like a tuft of lion-mane or elephant hairs etc. Sometimes these were decorated with western adornments including medals, bottle-caps and other doodads. No WW2 cross on it, yet there is a German tank on the front badge. The hat is full of wooden squares, no metal inside. Many tears on the inside, outside is relatively preserved. The piece comes from some German items confiscated by the communists in 1944 or later, and stored until 1990 when returned to heirs and sold to me. It has few tears on the inside green part and the wooden parts inside are showing out, however none have been lost. the part of the badge that should show the flag is black and is the same gloss as the rest of the badge. Here is a wooden mask hat. I don't know much about it other than it appears really old and handmade out of wood. There are imperfections- one horn is loose. There's a gouge out of the top of the head, ear and other horn(see pictures) It has been preserved pretty good: it is not disintegrating and is pretty stable. Up for auction are two rubber mannequin heads. They are made by Whitney Burmax. The skin is dark and makeup is lovely. These are ideal to display vintage hats. Sunglasses, etc. The hair is very short. These could be re-purposed and used for Halloween! They stand approximately 9" tall. Please note names are on them.
