Damage/Repair, A wonderful male ancestor figure holding his beard as an indicator of high rank and status in this world and in the spirit world! Baule Male Standing Figure Cote d'Ivoire African Art. The elaborate markings on their bodies front and back and their faces allied to the complexity and detail of the hair enhances their presentation as personages of high rank and social status. Facial features and hair are especially detailed. The figure finely balanced and the well-finished surface reflect Baule sensibilities of representation and aesthetics. This figure was used as an ancestor figure or a spirit of other world. In fact. Baule carved figures are known generally as waka sran, meaning a"person of woodâ. Such sculptures have multiple purposes and uses. They fall into two categories, the first represents the spirits of the wild(Asie Usu) that live in the bush beyond village boundaries. Figures of this category are owned by diviners known as Komien, who can read the future, heal as well as solve his client problems. The priest communicates with these spirits through such figures also considered as receptacles of spirits. Our piece may belong to this category because of the importance of encrusted sacrificial material on its surface. The second category of statues is composed of male and female figures that represent âspirit worldâ spouses for their owners.

Damage/Repair, wear. Crack in hedchips, shallow cracks in head, Additional Information: A well carved female figure sitting on a four-leg circular stool. Carrying a child in her hands. What is special on this piece is its hirstyle decorated with a carved double head on top. The figure has a beautiful worn patina and shows much handling! Such figures may have been commissioned by the male âPoro Societyâ or the female âTykpa(Tykepa) Society, both which were concerned with initiations, funerals and social control. She may also have been a Yasungo, a shrine figure or one of a male-female pair representing the first couple known as âKasingeleâ. What ever her use and appearance she is a strongly carved figure in a local style that is typical of Senufo forms. Senufo figures were used during different ceremonies and unless one knows the specific context of the figure it is often difficult to name the specific use and name of the figure.
