Type of Object, Sculpture. Carving, figure, Country of Origin, Democratic Republic of Congo, People, Zande/ or Azande, Materials, Wood. Iron, Approximate ... moreAge, Second half 20th Century, Dimensions, 8 inches H. Overall Condition, Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, General wear. Chips, Additional Information: A well carved figure with a large stylized head and flat face. A ovoid trunk with a prominent navel and heavy feet without legs. Among the Azande(Zande) figures like this are known as Yanda, served to represent ancestral or protective spirits who looked over the members of an Azande cult known as Mani(This cult was also shared by close neighbors the Mangbetu) Figures either carved of wood or shaped out of clay were used by senior male members of Mani, known as Bandakpa, to cure illnesses, forestall spells or to cast spells or attach a witch to an enemy. The Mani cult enrolled women and men and worked to assure health and to secure wealth and prosperity for the cult member. These charming figures takes their color from the magical application of roots. Plants, bark and seeds called Libele by the Azande. Local scarification patterns worn by the people are also carved onto the face and thighs and genitals of the figure. Zande sculpture was also thought to be related to that of their neighbors the Mangbetu. Ngbaka, and the Ngbandi. These highly abstracted figures are today not common as most were thought to be made during the first third of the 20th Century. Recommended Reading: E.E. Evans-Pritchard. These rare and facinating reliquary figures are always in male/female pairs. This is the male; I am selling the female of the pair concurrently on eBay- ... moreplease check my other items. The Ambete are part of the same group as the Kota and Punu and share with them a cult surrounding ancestral bones. The reliquary figures are particularly interesting. They are usually quite large. Columnar in shape and have a hatch at the back. It is sometimes claimed that bones are kept in this compartment. In all the examples I have seen, the space available is much smaller than the reiquaries used by the Fank, Kota, etc. I am inclined to think, that apart from some fragments, this compartment was chiefly intended to receive Bilongo- magical substances to keep the guardian powerful- rather than human remains. The latter would have been stored in a more secure basket beside the guardian. Interestingly. The hatches of these two contain a large clam shell, fastened in place with a nail and set in a bed of raffia, apparently a fetish object, leaving little room for anything else. The figures are quite large at 29" tall and wear necklaces. The faces are extremely distictive. Lozenge-shaped, with a central brow beneath which are smallish features designed to scare away potential thieves of the precious bones. Rows of teeth give the mouth bite. This is a rare and powerful figure. Seldom offered for sale on eBay.

On the frontier with the Republic of Congo, the Kota People comprise a number of small tribes such as the Mahongwe, the Sango, the Obamba and the Shamaye, who all pratise similar ceremonies. It is thought they migrated southwards during the 18th century and settled in the upper valley of the Ogooue River, in a forest environment. Their main resources come mostly from hunting and agriculture. Historically, the Kota left their dead unburied in the forest, far from the village. Under the influence of neighboring tribes, they then began to bury their dead. Chiefs were always buried, but often their bones, especially their skull were later exhumed and placed with magical objects in a bark box or a basket called a Bwete, in which a carved figure was inserted. A custom base is included with this piece. It is important to properly exhibit a beautiful piece of art. The splendor of the piece cannot be fully revealed without a correct display. Kasongo people live in dispersed villages in the regions of the Luba, Bangubangu, Hemba, and Songye in the province of Katanga in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They are of Mongo origin and moved to their new territory in the 18 th century where they became vassals of chiefs Luba(Samba) Bangubangu, and Hemba. In 19 th century they played ... morean important role in the region as mercenaries for the Arabs during their occupation of area. Their system of government shows Kuba influences. Their chiefs come from patrilineal clans and govern with a council of notables and are assisted by ritual specialists. Their religion is a combination of Mongo and Luba believes. Nature spirit cults belong to their Mongo heritage. Whereas, ancestor cults and initiations are more reminiscent of the Luba and Songye practices. Kasongo masks are almost unknown. Large and small Kasongo carved figures were documented, although, they are not seen often. Most of their works were attributed to the Kusu or Luba. This is a rare example from the Kasongo. What is most intriguing is the fact that this figure may have been used by the men’s secret society known as the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe society. The figure is depicted wearing a Kifwebe mask. The strong features and facial markings make Kifwebe one of the most dramatic masks in all of Africa. Young women will carry sculptures such as this from village to village indicating that they are no longer children but mature women ready and available for marriage. The sculptures carried by the young women serve as paradigms of beauty and well being reflecting the physical attributes of ideal beauty that the Jonyeleni reflects to others. Attye Female Figure Lagoon African Collection SALE Was $390
Type of Object, Female seated figure. Country of Origin, Cote D'Ivoire, People, Attye, Materials, Wood and pigment. Approximate Age, mid 20th century, Dimensions, 25.5 inches H. 8.75 inches W. Overall Condition, Poor. Provenance: From an old ... moreOregon collection. Additional Information: Attye figures are some of the most ravishing in all of Africa. Combining the best features of Baule sculpture with a unique"lagoon" appearance. The bulbous arms and legs, serene face and body shape common to the Attye show definite Baule influence, but there is stronger and bolder execution, daring use of abstraction, and greater volumes. The effect can be downright extraordinary. Having an area about the size of Germany, Côte d'Ivoire is bordered on the south by the Atlantic Ocean, on the west by Liberia and Guinea, to the north by Mali and Burkina Faso, and on the east by Ghana. The Attye are one of the so-called Lagoon people of Cote d’Ivoire. This area is a mixed association of 12 different language groups. Little is known about their art. It is recorded that Christian religion had destroyed most of their sculpture in the nineteenth century. This piece is one of the few that survived. Arts from the Lagoon area are rare, and difficult to attribute. They are all related but, if studied closely, one may find elements that facilitate identification. From the Attye we find very elegant standing or seated

ANTIQUE AFRICAN TRIBAL COPPER ARTS & ARTIFACTS Tool Weapon Mask Figure
Red Gold. Copper Arts of Africa” By Eugenia W. Herbert. Published by the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum in 1984. DISCUSSION: The catalog to a loan exhibition of African copper tools. African Art Carved Wooden Skeleton Figure Estate Collection~Wholesale lot of 17
Wholesale lot of 17 Carved Wooden African"Skeleton" Figures. These pieces came from a large collection of African art that I purchased in an estate sale. The previous owner was an entomologist who lived and worked in parts of Africa(mainly Tanzania and Kenya) for several years in the 1980's. While in Africa. He began purchasing art from the local artists to re-sell in the U.S. He recently retired and I was fortunate to purchase a large portion of inventory from his estate. Skeleton Figures are carved by the Makonde Tribe of Kenya and Tanzania. All of the many different styles of skeleton figures are derived from traditional grave markers used to ward off evil spirits. These decorative pieces are miniature versions of the 5 and 6 foot tall traditional figures. All of the figures are similar in content.they are adult figures carrying ... moresome sort of vessel on head and have a baby carried in a sling on their sides. Note= These figures all have very small bases. I have gotten each one to stand on it's own; however. They are VERY, VERY easy to knock over and somewhat difficult to stand. They must be on a true, flat surface in order to balance them. There are some surfaces around my house(desks and tables even) that I could NOT stand them up on. Making some sort of wider base to attach them to would be the best solution for standing display, in my opinion. I am selling them AS IS.in other words- standing not guaranteed without modification. Please consider this carefully before purchasing. I have shown the bases in closeup in 2 photos above. Carvings measurements vary slightly. They are approx. 15" to 16"tall x(Body width=1" Base width=1.25" x(Body=.5" thick) Natural variations in wood color and/or texture and small imperfections are common in these Hand-Carved art pieces. 3 LOT African WOOD CARVED TRIBAL ART Hand Carved Wood Sculpture Art Figure Bust For your Consideration is a 3 LOT HAND CARVED TRIBAL ART DISPLAY. These 3 carved wood figurines are very ornate and exquisitely detailed complete with metal earrings. Eye glasses, necklace and head piece. The larger one measures 18" in height. It has a surface crack on the one side which I magnified in picture 11. The crack does not go all the way across the bust nor is the crack very deep. This could be a stress crack from age and drying of the wood or the figurine could have experienced a fall at some point.I cannot decide. The head is tight to the neck and does not give the feel like anything is broken, however, the crack is there. There is some wear and scuff on all items commensurate with age.I have provided several pictures for your buying confidence and ... moreto help illustrate the condition of this tribal art.I do not know the mystical/ spiritual meaning or what these sculptures symbolize however, you can visualize a dolphin or whale when the carvings are inverted.I have provided a picture to illustrate this.Being Auctioned as found. Please forward any questions and I will attempt to answer them both accurately and in a timely fashion.Enjoy the Auction! Kenya has a land area of 580,000 km2 and a population of a little over 43 million residents. The country is named after Mount Kenya. A significant landmark and second among Africa's highest mountain peaks. Its capital and largest city is Nairobi. Modern day Mount Kenya was originally referred to as"Mt. Kirinyaga" by the indigenous people. Kirinyaga or Kerenyaga. Meaning‘mountain of whiteness’ because of its snow capped peak" The name was subsequently changed to Mt. Kenya due to the inability of the British to pronounce"Kirinyaga" correctly. Kenya has a warm and humid climate along its coastline on the Indian Ocean. African Art Figure Sculpture One Piece Carved Wood Estate Collection~ 11" x 4"
Abstract Figure Carved Wood African Art Sculpture. This piece came from a large collection of African art that I purchased in an estate sale. Note- sculpture stands up fine on its own. I did want to point out that when viewed from the side. Sculpture has a lean to it. Can be seen in pictures 2, 3, and 4 above. Picture 1 is straight on. Also, there is a crack in the lower part of the sculpture. See pictures 10 and 11 above* This is a complex figure design carved from one piece of wood. Carving measures approx. 11" ... moretall x 4" wide x 3 3/4" deep*Natural variations in wood color and/or texture and small imperfections are common in these Hand-Carved art pieces. Remember. African WOOD carving statue - Folk Art - Old Bust with head-dress- wooden figure
I inherited this from my dad and know very little about it. A unique face and head-dress on a delicate neck and sturdy base! I can see that it is carved wood(don't know what kind) and is stained a dark color. It has an African style face and head-dress. I don't know if it was made in Africa. It looks old because it shows some wear and tear like rubbed areas and what seems to be 2 chips off back edge of the head-dress. I'm not sure if this could have been there when it was made. I think this would look real nice if it were refinished. Of course the wear it shows does add a special antique look. There does seem to be a hairline crack down the side of the nose to the chin and up the forehead.see photos) This could have been there too from the wood itself. This crack does not extend into the neck or up the head-dress. Stands almost ... more11 inches tall and weighs almost 2 pounds. Base is 3 inches across. I took lots of photos. Please look at them well for the condition. Quite a unique bust! Always a smoke-free/pet-free home. Please e-mail me with questions or picture requests. I combine shipping on multiple wins when possible. Sometimes size or shape is an issue. Just request an invoice when you are FINISHED buying. Thanks for looking! Sorry. I do not ship outside of the United States.

An association devoted ... moreto honoring ancestors in order to obtain their goodwill. These figurative sculptures were placed on top of bark boxes containing the bones of revered ancestors, such as male founders of villages and women with exceptional spiritual powers. These ancestors, the great personages of the local lineage, were called upon to assist the living in solving critical problems and in dealing with issues of importance to the village. Image: Male reliquary guardian figure(eyema bieri) Detail The appearance of Fang reliquary figures varies greatly from region to region. In general. The artists who created these figures apparently were interested in depicting the ancestors through individualized features, such as hairstyle and adornment. Details of the head, including carved crests and hair extensions, refer to the plant-fiber wigs or headdresses once worn by the Fang. Men and women wore these wigs, which were elaborately ornamented with cowrie shells, glass beads, buttons, and brass tacks. Many Fang reliquary statues feature adornments of brass or copper alloy. A material that signifies wealth and prestige because of its ties to long-distance trade. The shiny metal is also associated with

Numbering nearly 2 million people, the Ashanti, or Asante, of Ghana are a widespread people in the southern portion of the country, and belong to the Akan conglomerate of ethnic groups. Most famous for their elaborate stools, which are carved for each member of the Ashanti society, they are capable craftsman, producing both fine metalwork via the lost wax casting method, and highly detailed woodwork, from maternity figures, to stools, to household items, to their internationally renowned"acua'ba" fertility dolls. The honored deceased are also commemorated with fired ceramic head busts. Understood ... moreoriginally to be symbolic of power. And tied closely with the succession of chiefs and kings, the Ashanti stool is a central part of their cultural identity, steeped in tradition, and even represented upon their cultural flag. The stools are said to contain the souls of their owners, and are kept and used to consult that soul after their passing. This Ghanian Ashanti stool is beautifully carved, and appears to be in good overall condition. It is normal, indeed typical for Ashanti stools to demonstrate a lean in one direction, as this would be the side that was used to sit upon. As such, a lean is present in this piece, and distinguishable in the photos. In the center of the seat is affixed a decorative piece of metal, most likely intended as a representation of prosperity. It stands successfully on its own, and in a safe room should require no additional support. This piece does display possible signs of use, and exhibits minor age cracking, as well as normal marks like edge chipping, rubbing, etc. An absolutely fantastic piece that has come to us directly from Ghana, and will undoubtedly make a beautiful addition to any quality collection! African Art Figure Sculpture One Piece Carved Wood Estate Collection~ 12" x 4"
Carved Wood African Art Sculpture. This piece came from a large collection of African art that I purchased in an estate sale. Note- There is a crack in the lower part of the sculpture and a hole in the bottom. I think it may have been caused by a knot in the wood. There is an area along the crack that looks lighter and unfinished. Sculpture feels very sturdy. No movement from cracked area or functional issue from hole in bottom. See last 4 pictures above* This is a complex figure design carved from one piece of wood. ... moreColor is brown. Bronze Dimensions with Marble Base:Height 12" x Width 155" Marble Dimensions:Diameter 11" Height without base: 7" Weight:23 LBS Inventory: 64Y3187246 The male and female lion sit and lay on the open plains strewn with the gold light of the setting sun. In synchronicity. They stare out to something lost and then found in the mirage of the horizon. After curiosity leaves the cats, the female will resume cleaning her front paws as the male will go back to scenting the air in the dusk. Other than a symbol for strength, other symbolic attributes of the lion include courage, power, royalty, dignity, authority, dominion, justice, wisdom and ferocity. The handmade bronze sculpture was molded ... moreusing the age-old method of lost-wax casting and stained with a brown patina finish for conservation. It is mounted upon a black marble base with the artist Barye's signature. Antoine-Louis Barye(September 24. 1796– June 25, 1875) was a French sculptor most famous for his work as an animalier. A sculptor of animals. Born in Paris, Barye began his career as a goldsmith, like many sculptors of the Romantic Period. After studying under sculptor Francois-Joseph Bosio and painter Baron Antoine-Jean Gros he was in 1818 admitted to the école des Beaux Arts. But it was not until 1823, while working for Fauconnier, the goldsmith, that he discovered his true predilection from watching the animals in the Jardin des Plantes, making vigorous studies of them in pencil drawings comparable to those of Delacroix, then modelling them in sculpture on a large or small scale. The Art of Lost Wax Lost wax casting has been around for thousands of years. Yet few people understand how the process actually works. Although mechanization has facilitated the lost wax process of bronze casting. The procedure is basically the same as that used by the Chinese when they first developed the process

When Portuguese sailors first visited the coast of Central Africa. Founded between 1350 and 1400, the kingdom was a model of centralized government, with a divine king and a network of advisers, provincial governors, and village chiefs who ruled as many as three million people. Portuguese navigators brought with them Catholic missionaries, who converted the kings of Kongo during the sixteenth century. It has been suggested that the practice of piercing the nkisi with nails, ... morespikes, or other elements was adopted from Christian images of martyred saints introduced in the area during this time. Figurative wood sculptures such as these are sometimes called"fetishes, a misleading word derived from the term feitico, which was used by the early Portuguese explorers to describe anything artificial or manmade. This striking sculpture is an nkisi(pl. minkisi) from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Minkisi are the creation of a sculptor and an nganga(pl. banganga) A ritual specialist in Kongo society. An nkisi is essentially a container of spiritual forces that are directed to investigate the underlying cause of some chronic problem. As spiritual experts, banganga are approached by clients to address any of a multitude of crises that may emerge in the community, including illness, political instability, and social strife. Minkisi are essential to the nganga's profession, creating a focal point from which to draw upon the spirit realm and its powers. Just as minkisi are directed toward specific ends, the banganga that own and control them may be specialized to address specific issues. For instance, only experienced banganga assume the responsibil
