These rare and facinating reliquary figures are always in male/female pairs. This is the male; I am selling the female of the pair concurrently on eBay- ... moreplease check my other items. The Ambete are part of the same group as the Kota and Punu and share with them a cult surrounding ancestral bones. The reliquary figures are particularly interesting. They are usually quite large. Columnar in shape and have a hatch at the back. It is sometimes claimed that bones are kept in this compartment. In all the examples I have seen, the space available is much smaller than the reiquaries used by the Fank, Kota, etc. I am inclined to think, that apart from some fragments, this compartment was chiefly intended to receive Bilongo- magical substances to keep the guardian powerful- rather than human remains. The latter would have been stored in a more secure basket beside the guardian. Interestingly. The hatches of these two contain a large clam shell, fastened in place with a nail and set in a bed of raffia, apparently a fetish object, leaving little room for anything else. The figures are quite large at 29" tall and wear necklaces. The faces are extremely distictive. Lozenge-shaped, with a central brow beneath which are smallish features designed to scare away potential thieves of the precious bones. Rows of teeth give the mouth bite. This is a rare and powerful figure. Seldom offered for sale on eBay.

Additional Information: This well carved figure of a woman is beautify carved with a ... moresubtle expression and composed stance with short straight legs. This is a typical Tabwa figure and would stand dramatically in a collection. Tabwa figures represent ancestors who were to assist in daily activities and during the hunt. Tabwa art is both a symbol and an aesthetic statement as the figures are often elaborately scarified in a fashion known among them until the middle of the twentieth century. The distinctive facial scarification consisting of a number of lines along the sides of the face and along the forehead and abdomen were the means whereby Tabwa identified themselves to localities and social status. They are also a high form of body art or ornamentation. Elaborate and attractive patterns and designs were worked into the skin according to the Tabwa concept of kulemba that reflect aesthetics. Additional Information: A Janus Reliquary Figure(Byeri Figures) from the Fang people(Ntumu Sub-group Northern Fang) Equatorial Guinea. This Janus guardian figure is not often noted among the Fang, although early reports mention male-female reliquary figures on shrines. This is a Very strong sculpture with a lot of presence! As sculpture. These Byeri figures stand out as a fine example of good carving in a later Fang style, and the sculptural detail ... moreis testament to the Fang artist who shaped them. Fang memorial sculpture has a long history of use and was in fact photographed as early as 1907(Tessmann 1913/1972, vol. II) However the cult of Byeri began to lose its prominence after 1910 due to colonial government pressure. During migrations which took place in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the Fang people moved to their present area becoming part of a complex overlay of population of approximately 200,000 which stretches from southern Cameroon into Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Living in small forest communities, the Fang focused upon tightly knit kinship and lineage systems. Stressing continuity and relationships, the kinship system was employed to emphasize the veneration of ancestors through the use of figurative sculptures. Each lineage's ancestors were located in family shrines, housing memorials or reliquary boxes known as byeri, containing their bones, under the care of an elder known as the Esa. The ancestors were consulted before any serious event such as hunting, traveling, marriage, war, or planting was undertaken. The Esa, the shrine keeper, was the oldest living member of the clan

The standing or seated statues of the Attye are some of the most ravishing of all African statuary. Combining the best features of Baule artistry with a uniquely"Lagoon" appearance. The bulbous arms and legs, serene face and stunning body proportions common to the Attye show definite Baule influence, but they are more daring in their execution, with exaggerated volumes, and the resulting effect can be downright extraordinary. This magnificent seated female is a sublime piece, with a dynamic blend of detail and expressiveness, and the carving when viewed from the side reveals an extraordinary profile. Unique to the Attye, the prominent, elevated scarification marks are often achieved by the insertion of small wooden plugs. Representing the forces of female fecundity, these statues are used in rituals to make these forces work. They are also employed by healers to cure sickness and to convey messages to the spirit world. The worn, ageless patina of our figure is glorious, and a testament to its age and importance to the village. The Greater Kudu. One of the most graceful of the tragelaphine antelopes, is a woodland antelope found throughout eastern and southern Africa. The Greater Kudus move in a bachelor herd, which can consist of 4 to 8 young males, through the thickets of the plains of Africa in search of food or a herd of females. The males can be distinguished from their female counterparts due to their larger size, horns that make 2.5- 3 graceful twists and the large manes running ... morealong their throats. They move in silence and heightened awareness on the plains, in the dawn, of Africa's Eden. They rarely leave the security of the thick bush-veld, rocky hillsides and dry riverbeds unless for the search of food, to avoid becoming prey to their predators. Predators of the greater kudu generally consist of lions, leopards, hunting dogs and unfortunately, humans. These beautifully shaped horns have long been prized in Africa for use as musical instruments, honey containers and symbolic ritual objects. In many cultures, the horns are thought to be the dwelling places of powerful spirits and in others are a symbol for male potency. This is an exquisite piece bringing to life the African kingdom. The magnificent creatures were cast using the archaic methods of lost-wax casting and stained with a brown patina tarnish to ensure longevity. They walk mounted upon a black marble base with the artist Milo's signature. The process of bringing a bronze sculpture to life using the lost-wax method is something you'll appreciate after taking this tour- Enjoy. The artistic diversity of the Bamana is without doubt one of the most astounding. And confounding, of all West African groups. It is interesting that perhaps their closest rivals in complexity are their neighbors to the north and east, the Dogon, with whom they share certain stylistic similarities. RARE 1930s? Horned Hemba African woman figure, no reserve
H orned figures(male or female) are very rare in Hemba art and the exact meaning is unclear. This is a wonderful example with serene eyes and a protruding tongue and belly. The figure is quite sturdy despite the loss on the back of the base. The artistic style of the Hemba is very similar to that of the Luba. As many of their forms are borrowed. Art often results from the elaboration of otherwise simple utilitarian objects. Extensive wooden sculptures, which often represent the ancestors, predominate. Near the end of the 16th century. The Hemba began their migration from an area to the northeast, probably modern day Tanzania. The Luba unsuccessfully tried to incorporate the Southern Hemba into their growing ... morekingdom. The Holo are a smaller grouping of people numbering between 6-10.000 living in close proximity to the Yaka, Suku, Chokwe and Pende people. Coming from Angola sometime during the 16-17th centuries they are now settled along the banks of the Kwango River. What we know of their art often dates itself to a mid-1950's messianic cult rising during which much of their ritual sculpture was destroyed. Therefore objects either pre-date this event or were hidden during the destruction that took place. The are known for their Nzambi sculptures which held a figure sitting within a square frame and with arms outstretched to either side of the frame in a gesture similar to a Christian crucifixion scene upon which the spread armed image is said to be based. There were other objects such as slit drums, masks and ironwork that were related to royal elite. However little is known of Holo sculpture at present. 42565* All content. Buyu Male Ancestor Figure DR Congo African SALE Was $750
Type of Object, Statue, Country of Origin, Democratic Republic of Congo, People, Buyu(Boyo. Buye) Materials, Wood. Aluminium, Approximate Age, Second Half 20th Century, Dimensions, Height: 18.5 inches, Overall Condition, Fair, Damage/Repair, one foot broken and repaired with glue. Large chip on one foot, Male Ancestor Figure. Additional Information: Male Ancestor Figure. This elaborately carved figure comes from the region between the Luluaba River and lake Tanganyika an area of great historical. Religious and artistic complexity. Reflecting this cultural complexity the Boyo are compromised of six distinct but related clans that share similar shapes but retain individual styles of art. This figure is attributed to the greater Buyu(or Basumba) style but can have an origin within a clan as yet undefined, perhaps from either the Hanga or Sumba(Basumba) ... moreThis strong carving shows an ancestor in a standing position with round and heavy head, a prominent abdomen, squared shoulders, heavy and angular limbs.Representing an honored chief this finely carved figure was kept on an altar in a shrine where it would be covered with a cloth around the shoulders and the lower abdomen. These figures were honored and receiving offerings and sacrifices. As an ancestor the figure served as a point of contact with the heroic chiefs of the past to comfort and direct a supplicant's life. The scarification patterns on the face and abdomen are those of an ancestor that the figure represented. The figure is well carved and fits in the Boyo stylistic canon and would add a strong sculpture to a collection. Recommended Reading: De Kun. N. L Art Boyo, Africa-Tervuren, 26, 1979.Biebuyck, D. Hollow Wood Cells Because of the misunderstanding regarding hollow wood cells. A brief explanation is needed. Any person dating carvings has many criteria to determine age. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. The study of providence shows it takes 250 to 300 years for a dry climate stored Dogon piec

Other markings on the body of the drum on either side of the drum opening. Drums such as this would be struck with a small stick to produce a sharp sound. Vegetal fibres adornment on the body. This figure appears slightly crouched with legs bent in a seated position. The two feet turned in sides and rested on a conical base. This figure is tentatively attributed to the Mano or Dan of Liberia. The Dan share many cultural and masking traditions with their Mano neighbors in Liberia. Figures are quite rare among the Mano and show strong influence from the Dan. This may be the case for this figure. It does not have the finished touch of the Dan sculpture. The facial features are similar to those of the Dan. More often, Dan figures have elaborate hairstyle, markings or scarification patterns. The lack of scarification and hairdo place this figure as more likely from the Mano people. Although distinguishing between these closely related peoples can be challenging. Very few is known about the uses and functions of Mano figures. It is probable that Mano figures do not portray real individual as notice in Dan culture. They most likely represent nature spirits or ancestors and may be used as shrine figures kept in special place and publicly shown on special occasions. Recommended Reading: E. Ashanti Akuaba Figure African Tribal Creation Art Maternity FERTILITY Ghana Doll
You are bidding on the Ashanti Akuaba Figure African Tribal Creation Art Maternity FERTILITY Ghana Doll Dimensions of the maternity figure are 13 1/2" x 5 1/2" x 2" It weighs 6 oz. The following description copies from the web page: The Ashanti or Asante tribe of Ghana is well known in the world of African art for their intricate and very fine craftsmanship. Experts at creating beautiful functional objects. Such as their famous stools, the Ashanti are also incredible at figure carving, as evidenced here. Unique to the Asante(Akan) of Ghana. Is the Akua'ba doll, an artform for which they have garnered much recognition and acclaim. In fact, the American Museum of Natural History has a large collection of these objects. The Akua'ba doll is a small to medium sized figure, carved from a solid piece of wood which demonstrates ... morean abstracted interpretation of Asante beauty ideals, namely the flat, rounded, disk-shaped head that is an immediately identifying characteristic of these dolls. They mostly commonly display a very large head, small body, small, terminated arms, and generally end in a base, rather than legs, though this is not always the case. Scarifications on the doll's'face' are said to be a'medicine' to guard against convulsions. The purpose of these dolls is rooted in a legend of a woman named Akua who allegedly was unable to bear a child. She visited a diviner and commissioned a small wooden doll which she then carried and treated as though it were her own living baby. The people of her villiage began referring to the doll as Akua'ba. Which translates to"Akua's child. After a time, she produced a healthy baby girl, who then grew up with this doll. This legend produced a still extant tradition of similar wooden objects being commissioned in the event of apparent infertility. The woman would then carry this small doll, often on her back in a cloth wrap, and treat it as though it were her own child until she is able to bear her own. ATTENTION! This piece

This well carved piece shows evidence of use and some age. It would stand well in any collection. The statues of the Attye are some of the most ravishing in all of Africa. Combining the best features of Baule sculpture with a unique"Lagoon" appearance. The bulbous arms and legs, serene face and body shape common to the Attye show definite Baule influence, but there is stronger and bolder execution, daring use of abstraction, and greater volumes. The effect can be downright extraordinary. Having an area about the size of Germany, Côte d'Ivoire is bordered on the south by the Atlantic Ocean, on the west by Liberia and Guinea, to the north by Mali and Burkina Faso, and on the east by Ghana. The Attye are one of the so-called Lagoon people of Cote d’Ivoire. This area is a mixed association of 12 different language groups. Little is known about their art. It is recorded that Christian religion had destroyed most of their sculpture in the nineteenth century. Arts from the Lagoon area are rare. And difficult to attribute. They are all related but, if studied closely, one may find elements that facilitate identification.
