These are memorial grave figure carved to commemorate a deceased family member. Bongo small figures are not common in collections and this particular example is probably one of the rare we've seen in years. this offered figure would be a major addition to a collection. The well-known Bongo figures are the very large Gravepost minimally carved and and placed on the tomb of their deceased leaders. In the recent past the Bongo lived in the southern part of the province of Bahr-el-Ghazal in the grasslands south of Sudan. Usually they shows traits that are evidence of a mixture of sources and cultures as figures play a prominent role among other Liberian and Sierra Leone an people including the Dan and Mende. This example is a pure Bassa sculpture with all details found on typical Bassa Figures. The head and face of this figure are carved in a similar manner as the better known Bassa masks called Geh-naw that dances in graceful and feminine movements to accompany the boys when they return to their village after having been initiated into the menâs society. The facial features are expressive. The elaborate braided hairstyle and distinctive scarification on the forehead. Additional Information: This standing male figure playing a piano thumb comes from the Chokwe. This is a strong and stylized figure with interesting details such as the impressive coiffure with projections. The body with muscles and the exaggerate feet. A musician figure is a well-known theme in Chokwe sculpture for it represents an ancestor in one of the most important role in the society: a musician wearing the headdress of an early Chokwe culture hero. Musicians play a prominent role in Chokwe society and are often represented in their art in various ways and in very dynamic poses including playing a drum or a thumb piano. And grinding tobacco. The large headdress is that of a senior Chokwe chief. This is a superb carving with a typical Chokwe treatment of the figure stance and face features. The instrument has seven keys which are made out of wood(bamboo) Sanza and Mbira are the terms used by many African cultures to identify such instruments. This thumb piano comes from the Zande(Azande) peoples of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Such objects can be found in various culture in sub-Saharan African. They come in varieties of types and have in common a soundboard with keys: Thumb piano is a traditional instrument which consists of metal keys. Which number varies from one instrument to another. Usually these keys mount a sound board made from wood. The soundboard is usually nicely decorated with metal stubs, decorative motifs, or carved sculpture like on this example. In some cases a calabash was attached to the thumb piano to stabilize the instrument and get better sounds. The thumb piano is played with the two thumbs stroking down and the right forefinger stroking up. Sanza music dates back to the mythical period and are transmitted from one generation to another. The figure has an elongated and angular body slightly flat. The Djimini are known as a sub-group of the Senufo. It is a group of about 100.000 people. The Djimini live in the northeastern region of the Cote d'Ivoire. They are close neighbors of the Baule. The village is considered to be the most important residential unit. The Djimini are farmers. The agriculture is an important part of their economy activities. Their art is somehow difficult to distinguish from that of the Senufo and Baule. Also, Djimini artistic productions are sometimes confused with that of the Senufo and Baule. However this figure is typical of the Djimini with its form and facial details. Such figures serve religion purposes not fully documented. Tradition believes are still in force among the Djimini in spite the strong influences of Islam and Christian religions. A ... morebark container known as a byeri was normally associated to Fang figures. The container would hold the bones of an ancestor that were venerated during annual ceremonies at which the ancestors were present in the form of the sculptures. This figure has not been attached to a bark reliquary but most probably was used during Byeri rituals. However the figure can still be appreciated for it s unique form as an example of hybrid Fang carving with strong Cameroon influences. This an unusual miniature example. But still fits firmly within the Fang tradition. Unusual elements include its very small size. The Fang live in three countries including Equatorial Guinea. Gabon and Cameroon. The atypical features of this piece appear to be stylistic elements commonly found in Cameroon, and point to this area for its origin. The sculptures of the Fang have obtained an almost legendary status among collectors. They attained this lofty position based almost entirely upon their"byeri" reliquary heads and figures. Protective figures representing ancestors are kept close by shrines. Often hanging on the shrine in large, loosely woven bags. These figures, carved by local specialists, are made of raffia bamboo tree pith, or local wood. In addition to its sculptural inventiveness Mambila sculpture is also known for the painting of the raffia bamboo pith figures in bright colors, however this wood figure has not been painted. The Mambila of Northern Nigeria are a relatively small group numbering about 25.000 living in a highland area stretching across the borders of Northern Nigeria and Cameroon. We have a large amount of items from a family estate. All the wooden figures listed were purchased somewhere between the 1950's and 1970's. They were my brother in law's collection. I will describe them the best that I can. They were on a shelf in his living room for many years. This lovely lady is 13" high. 7" around her belly. Very heavy wood. So heavy it feels almost like some kind of iron.but it is wood. It is heavy most likely due to being a solid piece of wood that was hand carved. I am starting them all at $4.99. Have fun bidding! And many of them crossed the border into contemporary Côte d'Ivoire over the next hundred years or so in search of uncultivated lands. Although Lobi villages are often very independent and so politically disorganized, they managed to put up a strong resistance to French colonialization. They revere spirits known as Thil. Shrines are built to these spirits under the instruction of a sorcerer and placed either on the roof or inside the home and are filed with objects such as vessels, abstract iron figures, stone and wood figures known as Bateba, which are believe to embody the Thil spirits. Lobi Bateba figures may be small or very large in size. They typically have slightly bent legs with roughly carved feet and an enlarged head with a high smooth or grooved coiffure. Some type of Bateba may be carved with different postures corresponding to various Thil. Statues with single raised arm symbolize a dangerous Thil, while copulating couples or maternity figures are believed to enhance the fertility of women living in the house. The present figure embodies the spirit of the ancestor and was probably used as the spirit of the ancestor evoked for multiple purposes. It is usually identified as the representation of the chief(Mwanangana) The Chokwe are made up of four sub-tribes. And live in Angola and the DR Congo, formerly Zaire. Chokwe art is well-known because of their face masks with deep lobes with coffee bean eyes, cruciform on forehead, scarification on cheeks, and pointed teeth use in the ceremonies of initiation and circumcision of young boys(Mukanda) Beside the masks, the Chokwe are also known because of their court art which includes carving figures such as this depicting Chibinda Ilunga, staffs, scepters, chairs or thrones, and other insignia of authority and office, and also for their variety of objects associated to the divination. The facial features and her hands holding her breasts, the figure has some attributes that are found among some of the Akan groups of Ghana,especially among the Fante. The form of the figure does fit into an Akan cannon of figural carving. The details of the face are well carved with finely braided hairstyle are suggestive of some Fante sculpture in the Costal region of Ghana where fertility figures are common. This seated female figure may be identified as a queen-mother or priestess figure. The gesture of the female figure holding her breasts suggests a specific purpose possibly for use in a shrine context as a fertility figure. Most famous for their elaborate stools, which are carved for each member of the Ashanti society, they are capable craftsman, producing both fine metalwork via the lost wax casting method, and highly detailed woodwork, from maternity figures, to stools, to household items, to their internationally renowned"acua'ba" fertility dolls. The honored deceased are also commemorated with fired ceramic head busts. Once one of the larger pre-colonial empires of West Africa, the Ashanti make up ... morea very large percentage of the population of their region still today. The maternity figure itself is an extremely important form of art produced throughout much of the African continent. And a form of this figure can be found in the majority of art producing ethnic groups. Some are rendered as part animal, some strictly human. Some are produced as clear representations, some are highly abstract. They are carved from wood and cast in metal. To the African woman, motherhood is the single most important role in life. An absolutely outstanding maternity figure. The woman depicted in this piece was incredibly fortunate by African standards, being covered at every angle by children! Bearing the famous circular disc-shaped head of the Acua'ba doll which is characteristically associated with Ashanti fertility motifs, this mother displays the good fortune of having five healthy children, one seated on each knee, one clinging to each leg, and one clutching her back. Her slender features replete with power, elegance, even pathos. Carefully mounted on a custom stand, she is an impressive and moving example of a fairly rare form. The primary output of the Idoma consists of white-faced masks which serve a variety of functions. Statues, when found, tend to be quite large, like our example. While statues often have the white faces associated with masks, the use of polychrome pigments is not unusual. The artworks of the Idoma primarily consist of masks with white. Kaolin-covered faces, and large statues with faces which resemble the masks. Pieces from central Nigeria are often very difficult to identify, since among the Igbo, Ibibio and Idoma there is an enormous overlapping of styles, and even on occasion artists from one group will craft masks for others. White-faced masks are used by the Idoma primarily for funerals, as the color represents death. Statues, when found, tend to be quite large, like our example. The figure has traditional cross hairstyle, beard going up to ears, fine patina and bent knee stance, Hemba number around 80.000 and live on the right bank of the Lualaba River west of Lake Tanganyika. They have been heavily influenced by their neighbors to the south, the Luba. Elements from the Luba are still present in the socio-political organization of the Hemba. The Hemba are divided into large clans headed by a hereditary ... moreleader known as the"Fumu Mwalo, who administers justice and watches over the ancestor figures.
