Tuscon, AZ; field ... morecollected in the Republic of Benin, 1978. Ex-Kirincich Collection. Tuscon, AZ, 2008 Catalog No. 1978.002.006 or 1978.008.006 found on base(7th numeral illegible) Detailed provenance documentation on file and can accompany the artifact for historical conservation purposes. The arts of the Yoruba are as numerous as their deities. And many objects are placed on shrines to honor the gods and the ancestors. The present example is an exceptional mid 20th century work that was field collected in Benin(the Yoruba live in both South West Nigeria, Benin, Togo and other coast areas) Some of the most elaborate court art in Africa comes from the country of Benin(once called Dahomey) home of the Fon kingdom, and from western Nigeria, home of the Yoruba and Edo kingdoms. Benin City, in Nigeria, is the capital of the Edo-speaking people. The art of the Fon kingdom incorporates animal imagery, symbolically associated with royalty and with proverbs that reinforce moral laws and the power of rulers. Since the seventeenth century, Yoruba-speaking peoples have been organized in a series of kingdoms. Much Yoruba art is made in association with deities known as orisha, each associated with particular iconography. The subject sculpture displays native repairs to the base, back, and sides of face. Good condition with natural wear, age cracks(all stable) erosion on the crest, and significant wood compaction on the underside of the base. Scarifications along the face and body. Appropriate of age, origin and medium. Please note this remarkable Yoruba figure was acquired by Robert Kirincich from Dr. Neil Justin. Ph.D. in 2008. Dr. Justin is a retired anthropologist and film maker whom has led over 23 safaris throughout Africa. Kirincich met Dr. Justin through the anthropology department at the University of Arizona and noted his collection included superior objects and early w

Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, Worn patina, Additional Information: The helmet and skirt suggest that this is a colonial era piece. Among the Yoruba. Who have the highest rate of twins in the world, the arrival of twins is seen as both a blessing and an omen because of the high mortality rate. If a twin dies, an image dedicated to Ibeji, the deity of twins, is carved to serve as the earthly abode for the spirit of the deceased. AFRICAN DOLLS FOR PLAY AND MAGIC, by Dagan. Among the Yoruba, twins have special powers, much like the orisha. and are to be treated with respect throughout their lives. If a twin dies, the mother seeks a diviner's advice about which carver should make the ere ibeji to stand in for the dead child. Once the figure is carved, the artist activates it by soaking it in a special solution and rubbing it with specific oils. The mother treats the ere ibeji as if it were alive, feeding, dressing, and bathing the image. Its face is washed with soap or sugarcane fiber, then rubbed with a cloth and indigo or laundry bluing. After a period of time, the facial features may be rubbed away. Going back to the 14th or 15th century, and culminating in the beautiful bronze wall plaques in Benin that record the images of the warriors that fought in the service of the Oba, King of Benin. Additional Information: This standing male figure playing a piano thumb comes from the Chokwe. This is a strong and stylized figure with interesting details such as the impressive coiffure with projections. The body with muscles and the exaggerate feet. A musician figure is a well-known theme in Chokwe sculpture for it represents an ancestor in one of the most important role in the society: a musician wearing the headdress of an early Chokwe culture hero. Musicians play a prominent role in Chokwe society and are often represented in their art in various ways and in very dynamic poses including playing a drum or a thumb piano. And grinding tobacco. The large headdress is that of a senior Chokwe chief. This is a superb carving with a typical Chokwe treatment of the figure stance and face features. This figure was obviously cared for and well used as the brown patina and the softening of edges indicate. This carving has it's own character and presence and would well be a good addition to include in a collection. Recommended Reading: Jordan. M. SUPERB LEGA INGINGA BWAMI FIGURE #2140 ~ For African Art Gallery
LEGA INGINGA FIGURE#2140 Tribe: Lega. Country: Democratic Republic of Congo. Material: Wood. Pigment. Size: 13.25" 33.66 cm) Tall Item: 2140 Condition: Very Good. The arts of the Lega(Warega) are well-known by collectors. And highly regarded for their naive, abstract appeal. The bulk of Lega artistic output is reserved for use by and for members of the"Bwami" Society. Figures like this Inginga sculpture representing humans, complete with short arms and hands, are rare. These small figures, used in the higher levels of Bwami, are normally much more abstract. Bwami is a complex organization consisting of multiple levels, and is open to both men and women. It forms the essential component of political, social, and religious life. Within Bwami, artworks are used in conjunction with proverbs, anecdotes, and performances to form ... morecomplex, layered metaphors which teach moral values. Wood and other figures have a wide range of style and quality in the carving. The member of the Bwami society who needed a sculpture carved would give the artist the requirements for the statue and the artist would have a great deal of artistic freedom in determining the final appearance of the object. Many figures have a varied degree of form and style. And unless the original context of the object was known it is impossible to determine it’s specific use or function. SUPERB LUBA DIVINERS CUP BEARER FIGURE #2183 ~ For African Art Gallery
LUBA DIVINERS CUP BEARER FIGURE#2183 Tribe: Luba. Country: Democratic Republic of Congo. Material: Wood. Size: 8.25" 21 cm) Tall. Item: 2183. Condition: Superb. Luba sculptural arts of divination range from female figures holding bowls and gourds filled with found objects and amuletic figures. To potent nkishi figures with medicinal and magical charges for protetion, healing and, sometimes, aggression. The efficacy of such objects allows Bilumbu to create"organising images" leading to the hypotheses of divination. Luba bowl figures are among the best known Luba objects. With their finely formed female figures and complex compositions. When a male Bilumbu medium(diviner) is entranced, a bowl figure is often placed beside him as the wife of his possessing spirit, for he must have his Kampamba assisting him to his right, and his ... morespirit wife(the bowl figure) to his left. The interiors on the figures' bowls often retain traces of the white chalk(mpemba) that is sacred to the Luba and related groups as a vehicle for the benevolence and blessing spirit world. It is used to attract a spirit's attention, attest innocence, and validate acquittals in divination conducted during litigation. by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! vintage carved wood african figure woman bowl on head
We have a large amount of items from a family estate. All the wooden figures listed were purchased somewhere between the 1950's and 1970's. They were my brother in law's collection. I will describe them the best that I can. They were on a shelf in his living room for many years. This lovely lady is 13" high. 7" around her belly. Very heavy wood. So heavy it feels almost like some kind of iron.but it is wood. It is heavy most likely due to being a solid piece of wood that was hand carved. I am starting them all at $4.99. Have fun bidding! If anyone knows anything about these carvings I am listing please let me know.

Fang Female Reliquary Figure Gabon African
Title, Fang Female Reliquary Figure Gabon African Type of Object, Carving. Statue, Country of Origin, Gabon. Cameroon, People, Fang, Materials, Wood. Studs, pigment, Approximate Age, Second half 20th century, Dimensions, 23.75 inches H. x 6 inches W. Overall Condition, Poor, Damage/Repair, broken feet and hands. Chipped breasts and navel, old insect damage arrested, cracks and chips in other places, scrapes and scratches, A Fang Female Reliquary Figure – ‘Eyema-o-Byeri’. Additional Information: This female reliquary figure seats on its own base. Her rounded head with crest hairstyle. Her long arms and her facial features are common sculptural characteristics found among the Ntumu sub-group of Fang who live in the Northern part of Gabon. Though similar in their forms the reliquary figures fall into a number of subtly differentiated ... moresub-styles that stretch from their core area in Gabon to southern Cameroon. The bark container normally associated to the figure that would have held the bones of the ancestor and onto which the sculpture would have been placed is missing. However the figure can still be appreciated for it’s unique form as an example of Fang carving. As one of the most powerful and best-known sculptural forms known in Sub-Saharan Africa. Fang figures hold a prominent place in the history of African art. As reliquary guardians, Fang figures often appear as though they are slightly crouched with legs slightly bent or shown in a seated position. Known as'byeri' these sculpted reliquaries held the bones of ancestors and were venerated through annual ceremonies at which they were present in the form of the sculptures. Photographed as early as 1907(Tessmann 1913/1972. Vol. II) the cult of Byeri began to lose its prominence after 1910 due to colonial government pressure. Further reading: Perrois. Louis, 1986. In dogon society. Horses were generally considered a luxury reserved for rich or powerful people. Horses occur in dogon beliefs about the creation of the world and the horse and rider figures are seen as a symbol of a mythological personage: the seventh Nommo. BACKGROUND The Lobi migrated into ... moreBurkina Faso from present day Ghana around 1770. And many of them crossed the border into contemporary Côte d'Ivoire over the next hundred years or so in search of uncultivated lands. Although Lobi villages are often very independent and so politically disorganized, they managed to put up a strong resistance to French colonialization. They revere spirits known as Thil. Shrines are built to these spirits under the instruction of a sorcerer and placed either on the roof or inside the home and are filed with objects such as vessels, abstract iron figures, stone and wood figures known as Bateba, which are believe to embody the Thil spirits. Lobi Bateba figures may be small or very large in size. They typically have slightly bent legs with roughly carved feet and an enlarged head with a high smooth or grooved coiffure. Some type of Bateba may be carved with different postures corresponding to various Thil. Statues with single raised arm symbolize a dangerous Thil, while copulating couples or maternity figures are believed to enhance the fertility of women living in the house. Most famous for their elaborate stools, which are carved for each member of the Ashanti society, they are capable craftsman, producing both fine metalwork via the lost wax casting method, and highly detailed woodwork, from maternity figures, to stools, to household items, to their internationally renowned"acua'ba" fertility dolls. The honored deceased are also commemorated with fired ceramic head busts. Once one of the larger pre-colonial empires of West Africa, the Ashanti make up ... morea very large percentage of the population of their region still today. The maternity figure itself is an extremely important form of art produced throughout much of the African continent. And a form of this figure can be found in the majority of art producing ethnic groups. Some are rendered as part animal, some strictly human. Some are produced as clear representations, some are highly abstract. They are carved from wood and cast in metal. To the African woman, motherhood is the single most important role in life. An absolutely outstanding maternity figure. The woman depicted in this piece was incredibly fortunate by African standards, being covered at every angle by children! Bearing the famous circular disc-shaped head of the Acua'ba doll which is characteristically associated with Ashanti fertility motifs, this mother displays the good fortune of having five healthy children, one seated on each knee, one clinging to each leg, and one clutching her back. On the face is depicted a traditionally graceful and serene expression, and she exhibits rings around her neck; indications of fat rolls, a common sign of prosperity among many African nations. Around perimeter of her head

The primary output of the Idoma consists of white-faced masks which serve a variety of functions. Statues, when found, tend to be quite large, like our example. While statues often have the white faces associated with masks, the use of polychrome pigments is not unusual. The artworks of the Idoma primarily consist of masks with white. Kaolin-covered faces, and large statues with faces which resemble the masks. Pieces from central Nigeria are often very difficult to identify, since among the Igbo, Ibibio and Idoma there is an enormous overlapping of styles, and even on occasion artists from one group will craft masks for others. White-faced masks are used by the Idoma primarily for funerals, as the color represents death. Statues, when found, tend to be quite large, like our example. While statues often have the white faces associated with masks, the use of polychrome pigments is not unusual. The veneration and protective importance of ancestors is perhaps the most prominent aspect of Idoma cultur

Horses appear in Dogon mythology about the creation of the world, and the horse has been interpreted as a blacksmith who represents NOMMO, or other mythological beings. Art and mythology are often the same, sharing visual images whether carved or spoken of during their rituals. The god Ammo mated with the earth, and gave birth to a pair of Nommo, bisexual beings, some predominantly male, some female.
