Figures such as this represent a beautiful young woman. A maiden. She is identified as being a"Jonyeleni" a member of the Jo society, a woman's and men's initiation society among the Bamana. Young women will carry sculptures such as this from village to village indicating that they are no longer children, but mature women ready and available for marriage. This takes place on a seven year cycle. These sculptures, carried by the young women, serve as paradigms of beauty and well being, reflecting the physical attributes of ideal beauty. This idealization of beauty is reflected in the firmness of the body, the pointed breasts, as well as the markings throughout the body. This figure also characterizes the essence of womanhood and of social cohesion that results from the order and structure of the Jo woman's society. Damage/Repair, General wear. Chips, Additional Information: A well carved figure with a large stylized head and flat face. A ovoid trunk with a prominent navel and heavy feet without legs. Among the Azande(Zande) figures like this are known as Yanda, served to represent ancestral or protective spirits who looked over the members of an Azande cult known as Mani(This cult was also shared by close neighbors the Mangbetu) Figures either carved of wood or shaped out of clay were used by senior male members of Mani, known as Bandakpa, to cure illnesses, forestall spells or to cast spells or attach a witch to an enemy. The Mani cult enrolled women and men and worked to assure health and to secure wealth and prosperity for the cult member. These charming figures takes their color from the magical application of roots. Plants, bark and seeds called Libele by the Azande. Local scarification patterns worn by the people are also carved onto the face and thighs and genitals of the figure. Zande sculpture was also thought to be related to that of their neighbors the Mangbetu. Ngbaka, and the Ngbandi. These highly abstracted figures are today not common as most were thought to be made during the first third of the 20th Century. Recommended Reading: E.E. Evans-Pritchard. Gabon: Extremly Old and Very RareTribal used African Fang figure.
Gabon: Extremly Old and Very RareTribal used African Fang figure. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. Height: 34 cm and more then 80 years old. The people that are called“Fang” in the geographic or ethnographic literature number 800.000 and constitute a vast mosaic of village communities, established in a large zone of Atlantic equatorial Africa comprising Cameroon, continental equatorial Guinea and nearly the whole north of Gabon, on the right bank of the Ogowe River. Historically the Fang were itinerant, and it is relatively recently that they have settled into this broad area. The migratory existence of the Fang prohibited the creation of ancestral shrines at gravesites. Instead, the remains of the important dead, in the form of the skull and other bones, were carried from place to place in a cylindrical bark box. The great rain forest ... moreregion where the Fang settled is a plateau of middle altitude, cut by innumerable waters with falls and rapids rendering navigation for the most part impossible, and with a climate typically equatorial. Fang are principally hunters but also agriculturists. Their social structure is based on a clan, a group of individuals with a common ancestor, and on the family.

Or Bakota, people are spread primarily across a sizable region of eastern Gabon, but also to a smaller extent in the People's Republic of Congo. A cultural hodge-podge, the Kota are primarily agrarian, farming a few primary crops, and are known for using the slash-and-burn farming technique, as well as crop rotations. Its forward surface has been covered with sheet metal, and it's'facial features' are made up of this metal, as well as various metal fasteners. The bottom of the figure terminates in an actual base, whereas some terminate only in a rounded end, making this piece somewhat easier to display. It is in quite good condition, though it does features typical rubs, dings, and scratches associated with advanced age and element

Nigeria. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. With color pigments. Height: 64 cm. Living mainly in the forested areas of south-west Nigeria. On both sides of the Niger River the Igbo number some ten million individuals. Mainly farmers and merchants, they also hunt and fish. They are subdivided into thirty-three subgroups and are spread out among about two hundred villages scattered through the thick forest or semifertile marshland. Only on the northern and western edges of the area, under influence from Igala and Benin, are hereditary rulers found. The heads of families form the council of elders, which shares its power with numerous secret ... moresocieties. These societies exercise great political and social influence. They are highly hierarchical, their members passing from one level to the next. There is strong social pressure toward individual distinction, and men can move upward through successive grades by demonstrating their achievements and their generosity. The lack of overall centralization among the Igbo-speaking peoples has been conducive to the development of a great variety of art styles and cultural practices. The earliest sculpture known from Igboland is from the village of Ibo Ukwu. Where the grave of a man of distinction and a ritual store, dating from the 9th century AD, contained both chased copper objects and elaborate castings of leaded bronze. Ibo sculpture is subject to rather strict rules: the figures are generally frontal, symmetrical, and upright, with legs slightly spread, arms held away from the body, and hands stretched forward, palms open. African YORUBA carved mother figure
YORUBA. NIGERIA ESHU CARVED MOTHER FIGURE(Very rare) Weight: 2.6kg Height: 22" Width: 9" The Yoruba are an important ethnic group mainly occupying Southwestern Nigeria. Mainly for genetic reasons. This very large tribe happens to present the highest dizygotic twinning rate in the world(4.4% of all maternities) The high perinatal mortality rate associated with such pregnancies has contributed to the integration of a special twin belief system within the African traditional religion of this tribe. The latter is based on the concept of a supreme deity called Olodumare or Olorun. Assisted by a series of secondary gods( Orisha) while Yoruba religion also involves immortality and reincarnation of the soul based on the animistic cult of ancestors. Twins are therefore given special names and believed to detain special preternatural powers. ... moreIn keeping with their refined artistic tradition. The Yoruba have produced numerous wooden statuettes called Ibejis that represent the souls of deceased newborn twins and are involved in elaborate rituals. Among Yoruba traditional beliefs and lore some twin-related themes are represented which are also found in other parts of the world. Eshu. A trickster, is one of the Yoruba orisha(gods) Eshu is also a contradictory personality responsible for the good and bad changes that occur in life. The Yoruba honor and make sacrifices to Eshu to placate him and they place Eshu imagery on carved doors. And shrines to the god at crossroads, marketplaces, town gates, and compound entrances, places where Eshu can cause unexpected things to happen. The mother figure with long ponytail-like hairstyles or headdresses may represent worshippers of Eshu. According to a fellow ebay member: It is Yoruba from Nigeria and is a maternity shrine piece to the Divine Messenger Esu(Eshu) and right now I wish I could win the lottery because it is magificent: Every single element SCREAMS Yoruba and the queue(pig-tail) with the face is an unmistakable mark of an Eshu figure. As are the stings of cowri

Or Wanyamwezi, are the second-largest of over 120 ethnic groups in Tanzania. They live in the northwest central area of the country, between Lake Victoria and Lake Rukwa. The term Nyamwezi is of Swahili origin, and translates as"people of the moon" Historically. There have been five tribal groups, all referring to themselves as Wanyamwezi to outsiders: Kimbu, Konongo, Nyamwezi, Sukuma, and Sumbwa, who were never united. All groups normally merged have broadly similar cultures, although it is an oversimplification to view them as a single group. The Nyamwezi have close cultural ties with the Sukuma people. Their homeland is called Unyamwezi, and they speak the language Kinyamwezi, although many also speak Swahili or English. It was only in the 19th century that the name could be found in literature; the term might include almost anyone from the western plateau. Travel taught them that others called them Nyamwezi. And almost all men accepted the name given to them by the coastal people indicating that the Nyamwezi came from the west. A century later, their land is still

Upbeat rhythmic drum playing found all over the continent, though some styles, such as the Township music of South Africa do not make much use of the drum and nomadic groups such as the Maasai do not traditionally use drums. Elsewhere the drum is the sign of life: its beat is the heartbeat of the community. Drums are classed as membranophones and consist of a skin or"drumhead" stretched over the open end of a frame or"shell" Well known African drums include the Djembe and the Talking drum. Many aspects of African drumming. Most notably time-keeping, stem from instruments such as shakers made of woven baskets or gourds or the double bell, made of iron and creating two different tones. Each region of Africa has developed a different style of double bell but the basic technology of bell-making is the same all over the continent, as is often the bell's role as time keeper. The South American agogo is probably a descendent from these African bells. Other idiophones include the U
