Pigment, Approximate Age, Second half Twentieth Century, Dimensions, 12 inches H. Overall Condition, Poor to fair, Damage/Repair, worn patina. Shallow cracks, chips, and dents in places, Additional Information: A well used Songye male figure. This figure has a strongly defined body and the well-known Songye jutting chin and geometric nose with the eyes sculpturally higher on the forehead. The age of the object can be seen in the wear of the surface through long use and the accumulation of offerings. The surface on this piece shows it has been receiving offerings or sacrifices or ritual libations. Many groups in the greater Congo area. And elsewhere, use art to meet the contingencies of everyday life through the activities of the local priest or diviner known as the Nganga. These individuals of great spiritual strength and inductive abilities use the rituals, secret formulae and sculptures to heal and prevent the activities of malevolent forces. Sculpture like this are known as Nkishi and often serve to divine the future, control one s destiny, and forestall evil-doers or to work magic and most importantly to gain the attention of the spirit world. Among the Songye and other Bantu language speakers, sculpture such as this Nkishi serves as the contact point between the spirits and the Nganga, it is where the ritual activity of the diviner meets spiritual presence. Title, Ngbaka Ngbandi Standing Figure Nabo DR Congo African, Type of Object, Sculpture. Carving, Country of Origin, Democratic Republic of Congo, People, ... moreNgbaka or Ngbandi, Materials, Wood. Pigment. Approximate Age, Second half 20th Century, Dimensions, 17 inches H. x 3.5 inches W. Overall Condition, Good. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, several cracks in the back. Chips in places Additional Information: This figure comes from the culturally dynamic northwestern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo along the river systems feeding the great Congo River. Especially from the Ngbaka or Ngbandi. This is a well-carved figure with painted lines on the body, a serene face and frontal scarification typical of the Ngbaka-Ngbandi style. The Ngbaka moved into the area inhabited by the Ngbandi in an area bounded by the Ubangi and Lualaba River systems and as a result both groups share sculpture forms and the details of scarification that often leads to some confusion as to the attribution of their sculpture. Ngbaka use anthropomorphic figures. Generally in pairs, to represent mythological and distant family founders known as Seto a male and Nabo his wife that are kept on family shrines. Ngbaka figures take their red color from being washed in palm oil and red tukula powder made from tree bark. The facial features are divided by a vertical line of scarification that in other figures extends onto the lower body. The shaping of the details of the body are truly a study and sculptural inventiveness. Recommended Reading: Burssens. H. Les Peuplades de l'Entre Congo-Ubangi(Ngbandi,Ngbaka, Mbandj, Ngombe, et gens d eau) 1958.

Rare antique cast bronze figural relief. Made by the Dogon in Mali. Piece has a wonderful, very old encrusted patina on it and could date the piece to ... moreat least the 19th century and maybe even much older. 5” H x 4 1/4” W. A very unique image: It appears to be a head looking out of a decorative wall, with hands hanging from a bar, and a small, round base with holes at the sides to attach to something, not in the right place to hang to wear) It probably was some type of shrine piece(see below) Bronze casting has a long history in Africa. Going back to the 14th or 15th century, and culminating in the beautiful bronze wall plaques in Benin that record the images of the warriors that fought in the service of the Oba, King of Benin. I was told by an African friend that many of the wonderful Dogon bronze pieces in the collection I was recently able to buy, had various meanings for the individuals who owned them. They would have been taken into the“society house” similar to a meeting place, church, shrine) and used for various rituals including those ceremonies conducted by a“healer” or for funerary events. gsrx_vers_566(GS 6.7.1(566)

These rare and fasinating reliquary figures are always in male/female pairs. This is the female: I am selling the male concurrently on eBay- please check ... moremy other items. The Ambete are part of the same group asthe Kota and the Punu and share with them a cult surrounding ancestral bones. Their reliquary figuresnare particulary interesting. They are quite large. Columnar in shape and have a hatch at the back. It is sometime claimed that bones were kept in this compartment. In all the examples I have seen, the space available is much smaller than the reliquaries used by the Fang, Kota, etc. I am inclined to think that apart from from some fragments, the compartment was chiefly intended to receive bilongo- magical substances to keep the guardian powerful- rather than human remains. Interestingly. The hatches of these two examples contain a large clam shell, fastened in place with a nail and set in a bed of raffia, apparently a fetish object, leaving little room for anything else. The figures are quite large at 29" and wear necklaces of seeds. The eyes are made of cowrie shells. The faces are exremely distinctive. Lozenge-shaped with a central brow beneath which are smallish, fierce features designed to scare away potential thieves of the precious bones. Rows of teeth give the mouth bite. This is a rare and powerful figure. Seldom offered for sale.

Title, Dogon Standing Female Figure Nommo Mali African Type of Object, figure, Country of Origin, Mali, People, Dogon, Materials, wood. pigment, Approximate ... moreAge, second half 20th century, Dimensions, 15 inches H. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, general wear. Chips, Additional Information: A standing Female Figure lifting her breasts. The figure is wearing a carved labret under her chin. This well-used female figure comes from the Dogon of Mali. Known for their art as well as where they live along the heights of the Bandiagara escarpment Dogon art remains today some of the best known and collected African art. This female figure is a prime example of classic Dogon sculpture that represents a tradition of carving rarely surpassed for longevity or imagination for Dogon art extends to the past as early as the 12th century and continues to be created in the present. The figure stands with legs slightly bowed on a rounded base with her arms along her sides carved so that they hang free with her hands on her abdomen. The herniated naval is a commonly illness seen on both men and women in the region. Her exaggerated thighs and buttocks create a parallel to the shape of the breasts and shoulders extending out of the back. The figure may represent an ancestor or equally a Nummo. One of the eight primordial figures created by God. She may have been placed on a family altar or kept in the village priest s shrine where she would have offerings made upon her to infuse her with life force to assist humans on earth and to intercede with the deities. The offerings made over time have eroded and roughened the surface giving it an ageless presence. This is a classic Dogon sculpture and would be a prime piece in a collection as it reflects all the creativity and sculptural imagination of the Dogon sculptor who was the local blacksmith.Griaule, M. YORUBA IBEJI TWIN SET WITH BEADED COATS#2423 Tribe: Yoruba Country: Nigeria. Material: Wood. Pigment, cloth, beads, metal. Size: 12" 30.48 cm) Long. ... moreItem: 2423 Condition: Used. Good.see images) The Yoruba are known for their extraordinarily high rate of multiple births and one of the highest in the world as regards twin birth. At one point in the past twins known as Ibeji. Were thought by the Yoruba to be evil and were quickly killed as they were considered to be monsters and abnormal. However, a cult of twins developed in which the twins were now seen to be minor deities who blessed their families with good fortune. The death of either of the twins or both is thought to be calamitous for the family that must be remedied by appeasing the soul of the deceased child through the carving of a figure put in the care of the mother who will treat the small wooden figure as though it were the deceased twin and alive. Ere ibeji are also identified with the Yoruba Thunder God Shango who is known by red and blue beads as worn by this old figure around the waist. Wrists or neck and often by the application of blue indigo to the hair. Ere ibeji are carved as small children with adult attributes as to sex, breasts and hairstyles and as a result they are fixed in time as adults. by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! Among the Yoruba, twins have special powers, much like the orisha. and are to be treated with respect throughout their lives. There is a very shiny plant fiber woven ... morewrapping around his neck and his waist (you can see red fabric under the waist wrapping). He carries a mirrored compartment on his back. It looks like some kind of dripped or applied substance coming from the eyes, like tears. Approximately 6 1/4" tall and 2 1/4" wide at base from front. From Congo Normal ... more0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Aside from the beautiful cloth mentioned above. The Kuba also produce carved wooden masks and figures. They also carve headrests, divination oracles, and anthropomorphic cups. In the 16th century. The Kuba peoples migrated from the distant north to their current location along the Sankuru River. When they arrived, however, they found that the Twa already lived there. The Twa were eventually absorbed into the Kuba Kingdom, but retained some independent cultural characteristics. The height of the Kingdom was during the mid-19th century. Europeans first reached the area in 1884, but the Kuba, being relatively isolated, were not as affected by the slave trade as many of the other peoples in the area. The Nsapo invaded during the late 19th century, and the Kingdom was broken up to a large extent. The Kuba oral history tells of the creation of the world by Bumba. Who decreed that the Bushoong would always be the ruling class. This creator god is not formally worshiped. At one time the Kuba had a religion based on ancestor worship, but this seems to have died out, although divination is still practiced in order to discover causes of evil. Success during hunting is recognized as a gift from the gods. It is not incidental that diviners often employ carved wooden hunting dogs as rubbing oracles in order to arrive at their knowledge. Dogs are seen throughout the region as responsible for delivering the will of the god, whether it be through hunting or through the diviner. FANG BIERI AFRICAN FIGURE - CAMEROON/GABON
Fang Bieri Figure– Cameroon/Gabon The bieri would be consulted when the village was to change location. When a new crop was planted, during a palaver, or before going hunting, fishing, or to war. But once separated from the reliquary chest, the sculpted object would lose its sacred value and could be destroyed. The ritual consisted of prayers, libations, and sacrifices offered to the ancestor, whose scull would be rubbed with powder and paint each time. With its large head, long body, and short extremities, the Fang bieri had the proportion of a newborn, thus emphasizing the group’s continuity with its ancestor and with the three classes of the society: the“not-yet-born, the living, and the dead. The relics were essentially skull fragments, or sometimes complete skulls, jawbones, teeth and small bones. The bieri also served for therapeutic ... morerituals and, above all, for the initiation of young males during the great so festival. This fine example measure 23“ tall and 5.5“ wide.

Dogon figures depicting horses and riders reflect the prestige and power surrounding an animal that has been associated with royalty since horses were introduced to West Africa more than a thousand years ago. Dogon equestrian figures are most often identified as images of the HOGON, since in Dogon society horses are a luxury generally reserved for rich an powerful people. Horses appear in Dogon mythology about the creation of the world, and the horse has been interpreted as a blacksmith who represents NOMMO, or other mythological beings. According to DOGON CLIFF DWELLERS, by Imperato(which I am selling on eBay) the horse was the first animal to leave the ark, in Dogon mythology, and symbolize chieftainship, power, and wealth. The figure has a cavity in the top of head. This cavity was use to be filled with magical substances that provide magic power to the figure. The Kusu sculpture is stylistically related to other groups in the Democratic Republic of Congo including the Luba and Hemba peoples. Figures such as this served a common purpose as objects of power. Among many of the different ... moregroups living in the greater Congo region the use of magical objects and materials is an everyday fact of life. The purpose of these objects is to control the destiny of their lives and to ensure that bad things do not occur and when one suffers misfortune to be able to explain why it occurred and who caused it to happen. Magical control devices can take many forms. For example the nail fetishes among the Kongo people are well known, or those among the Teke where figures are caked with organic materials and equally the Songye who attach magical plants, bits of cloth or different metals to the figure. Among the Songye power figures more commonly termed fetish figures have different magical substances the owner specialist considers important to give the figure power to act and the magical substances that load a figure with power are called bishimba. The specialist who uses the figure is known as an nganga, literally a specialist(doctor) who can cure, divine or direct magical power against others. The power of this figure is embedded in the bishimba that was to be pressed into the hole lined with small spikes at the top of the head or into the small navel hole in the abdomen.
Nigeria: Rare Tribal used african Habit for twins figure from the Ibeji
Rare Tribal used african Habit for twins figure from the Ibeji. Height: 22 x18 cm. The Yoruba of central Nigeria have an extremely a high number of twin births(4.5% compared to other populations. Especially those of western Europe and the United States. There are a few theories, including the hypothesis that the yam has something to do with it, but I don´t believe that this has much evidence to support it. In many African tribal societies, twins were seen as a signs of impending bad fortune and were killed after birth. The Yoruba people, on the other hand, believe that twins are the bearer of magic power and might, and need a special kind of attention from the family and the society of the village.
Baule Seated Maternity Figure African Art
Type of Object, Statue. Carving, Country of Origin, Cote d'Ivoire, People, Baule, Materials, Wood. Beads, pigment, Approximate Age, Mid 20 th century, Dimensions, 26.5 inches, Overall Condition, Fair, Damage/Repair, Age cracks to the head. Face, torso, legs, and base; broken baby's foot, Additional Information: This seated figure of a woman breast-feeding the child she olds on her knees comes from a shrine some where among the Baule of Ivory Coast. The figure seats on an elaborate carved stool decorated with two animal masks and two bent legs.Remains of dust and obvious wear indicates long use and substantial age for this wooden figure. Classically carved figures such as this mother and child among the Baule are known generally as waka sran. Meaning a'person of wood' Some maternity sculptures were owned by diviners known as ... moreKomien, who could tell the future, cure illnesses as well as solving local community problems. The figure embodies a number of symbolic elements as shrine figure; she is a ’mother’ and for the diviner she is a place of residence for the spirit of the bush to reside ready to be called upon by the diviner. Advised by the bush spirit(asye usu) the diviner will determine the reason that a woman is barren and direct her as to what she must do bear children. It is the energy and power of the bush spirits that create and give life that are contacted by the diviner and directed to the woman. This well carved figure exhibits typical Baule concern with the aesthetics of the presentation of the beauty of the women and child. Her hair is carefully combed and modeled and scarification on her chest, abdomen, neck and face show her as a mature and prominent woman of her village. Despite crack damages. This is still a superb sculpture and will stand out in a collection. Recommended Reading: P. L. Ravenhill: Baule Statuary Art: Meaning and Modernization. The figure is identified with the Yombe people who live in Democratic Republic of the Congo. Yombe figures are some of the most familiar of Congo/Zaire art. Male figures are rare. Many of them are used to bridge the gap between the known and the unknown, and to ease everyday tensions. The historical roots of the Kongo group. And their great king"Ne Kongo, can be traced back to the 13th century. Without much competition, they expanded steadily until they controlled a vast part of West Central Africa, including most of present day Angola, Gabon, Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo. The arrival of the Portuguese and their missionaries in the 16th century ended their expansion, especially southward. The Kongo were also one of the major sources of slaves to the New World. Iv. Coast: Old & very nice Tribal used African Baoule figure.
Old and very nice Tribal used African Baoule figure. Iv. Coast. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. Height: 21 cm and collected in 1960 till 1974 The Baoule. Estimated to number I million at the beginning of the a century, form part of the Akan group of the Iv. Coast. They occupy a part of the eastern Iv. Coast that is both forest and savanna land. The Akan created a series of kingdoms and city-states that progressively occupied the entire forest region all the way to the Gulf of Guinea. During the eighteenth century, the queen, Abla Poku, had to lead her people west to the shores of the Cornoe, the land of the Senufo. In order to cross the river. She sacrificed her own son. This sacrifice was the origin of the name Baoule, for baouli-ineans"the child has died. I. N. Loucou, 1984) Since the regime was rnatrilinear, at the queen's ... moredeath her niece succeeded her and ruled over the kingdom of Sakassou, which brought together the tribes that had followed the queen in her exodus. Yet. As the political system was a decentralized one, the relations of Sakassou were limited to the payment of tributes, to appealjudgments, and to matters of religion. The effective authority of the queen did not reach beyond the village in which she resided and her role was nothing more than one of prestige. The regional powers were entrusted to members of the royal Wareho clan.
Anzengruber Vintage Austrian Figure of an African lady 1940s/50s?
A vintage figurine of a nude African maiden. It is incised on the base made in Austria Anzengruber and measures 11 inches high and the curved base is 5.5 inches wide. Damage/Repair, large cracksin face. Abdomen, and base, child legs with splits in knees, holes, scrubbed patina, Provenance: from an old Oregon Collection. Additional Information: ... moreDogon sculpture has long held a prominent place in collections of African Art as examples of the best that the African sculptor has created. This well used figure with her arms wrapped around the child projects maternal assurance and protection. Figures such as this of the standing mother holding a child are commonly called maternity figures. However this term is slightly misleading as the figure held within the female s arms is more than a child and is most probably an adult with attributes of an adult. Sometimes a beard, or shown wearing jewelry or adult dress. What appears to occur, as in this figure, is reference to the mother representing one of the original founding primordial beings who gave us birth(Nummo among the Dogon) or she could represent a lineage mother or simply represent the concept of life and fertility. Maternity figures serve a number of important symbolic roles but all must meet certain aesthetic requirements of representation and symbolic meaning. Classically carved figures such as this mother and child among some of the finest art produced in West Africa and the obvious quality of this carving is impressive. I have examined this piece and agree with the
Awesome Huge Carved West African Tribal Ethnic Dance Wooden Mask Statue Figure
This is a huge almost two feet tall awesomely carved African wooden mask. It's in a man's(or woman) face wearing a horned beast head mask. The eyes. Mouth, and the nostril of the face are highlighted with black pigment. The area around the face and throughout the beast head is decorated with small zigzag shark-tooth like marks. The wood is strong and heavy, and has very fine grains, patterns and natural warm color, probably teak wood. The back is hollowed out. Definitely a very impressive piece of tribal art and would make a great hanging decor, given its large size and warm natural wood tone. By attaching a piece of cord, you may even be able to wear it. On special holiday processions, such as The Day of Dead, Mardi Grass, or Halloween, imagine wearing such huge gorgeous mask. It would invite admiration from everyone. At the cost ... moreof a few pizzas, it's a real steal, considering how much labor it takes to design, carve and polish, and it has crossed oceans and continents, and survived decades of the test of time. A great home or office decor! Dimension: approx. 24inches(2ft) in height; 8 inches in width. And 3inches in depth. Weight: heavy teak. About 4lbs. Age: vintage. Origin: Western Africa. It has handwritten words"made in Senegal" on the back side. Condition: Overall very good. Some minor wear. And a small chip in the lower left(see the back picture) which can be seen from the back but is barely noticeable from the front, and a hairline crack along the spot. The mask must have dropped at certain point of time due to improper hanging and it hit the ground at that spot. For such large and heavy mask, I would recommend use of secure harness for hanging. NO RESERVE FOR THIS LOT BEYOND THE STARTING PRICE. Please feel free to ask questions. Welcome to check out my other listings. I take offers. Happy holidays! Happy collecting!

Luba Kneeling Female Figure DR Congo African
Type of Object, Carving. Statue, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Luba, Materials, Wood, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, 12.25 inches, Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, General wear. Shallow cracks, Luba Kneeling Female Figure. DR Congo, African Additional Information: This kneeling female figure with Luba typical hairstyle and scarification on the abdomen demonstrates the respect and importance that Luba artists lavish on women. Though the vital role of women in any society is obvious. The sculptural and ritual emphasis placed upon them by the Luba is not completely understood. According to Neyt's superb book. LUBA, The representation of women is omnipresent in Luba art. It is through woman that the ancestor reveals himself anew in the child. The kneeling female figure has her hands on the breasts as symbol ... moreof pride. Shes's proud to be the"giver of life" nourishing her descents, and as guarantor of fecundity. Such figures were kept in personal and family shrine. It is thought. However, that the artisitic dominance of the female form originated somewhere in Luba mythology. The world's greatest museums and private collections are filled with Luba sculpture, as the beauty of some of their finest pieces transcends those of almost any other African culture. For such a small group, their impact on the art world has been extraordinary. Recommended Reading: Francois Neyt. LUBA. 69458* All content. Dan or Mano Male Figure Cowrie Shells Liberia African
Title, Dan or Mano Male Figure Liberia African Art, Type of Object, African carving, Country of Origin, Liberia/Ivory Coast, People, Mano or Dan, Materials, Wood. Cowrie shells, vegetal materials, beads, Approximate Age, 20th century, Dimensions, Height is 18 inches, Overall Condition, poor. Damage/Repair, large cracks in the head and base, Additional Information: Male figure holding a scepter in the right hand. A basketry ... moreshield-like in the back. The head is crowned with a cowrie shell headgear. He wears a beaded ornament around the neck and the waist. This figure appears slightly crouched with legs bent in a seated position, the two feet turned in sides and rested on a conical base. The figure is tentatively attributed to the Mano or Dan of Liberia. The Dan share many cultural and masking traditions with their Mano neighbors in Liberia. Figures are quite rare among the Mano and show strong influence from the Dan. This may be the case for this figure. It does not show the finished touch of the Dan sculpture. Yet the facial features are very similar to those observed on the Dan sculpture. Usually, Dan figures have elaborate hairstyle and markings or scarifications. The lack of scarification and hairdo place this figure as more likely from the Mano people. Although distinguishing between these closely related peoples can be challenging. Very few is known about the uses and functions of Mano figures. Mano figures do not portray real individual as notice in Dan culture. They most likely represent nature spirits or ancestors and may be used as shrine figures kept in special place and publicly shown on

Baule figure sculptures fall into two categories. The first represents the wild spirits(asie usu) that live in the bush beyond village boundaries and the second category are the male and female figures that represent ‘spirit world’ spouses for their owners. Though representing bush spirits the asie usu are shown as wild spirits in beautiful bodies. These figures were used by trance diviners known as komien and were kept in a shrine in the diviner’s house where the spirit of the bush could inhabit or ‘sit’ on the figure. In addition to the idealized beauty of this figure other shrine objects are not carved and may be roughly carved figures, simple daubs of clay or pans filled with magical substances or roughly shaped figures. Diviners will perform in public where the spirit will possess them or will advise clients in private close by their shrine. Diviners will wear hats. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, Dust. Damage tin face, cracks in head, body, and base, head has been repaired, chips. Additional Information: The Yoruba of Nigeria ... moreand of the Benin Republic are known for having an extraordinarily high rate of multiple births. There is also a high mortality rate; half of the twins die shortly after birth. In earlier times. New-born twins, or ibeji, as they are called, were believed to be evil, monstrous abnormalities and infanticide was a common practice. However, such beliefs and practices were later superseded and reversed, and by the middle of the 18th century twins came to be seen as a blessing; they were awarded the status of minor deities, called Orishas, and their arrival was viewed as an omen of good fortune for the family. By the 19th century the cult of the Ere Ibeji was firmly established and continues to this day. The death of one or both twins is regarded as a great calamity for the family, one which requires immediate appeasement of the soul of the deceased child. Though the cause of the high rate of twin births among Yoruba women has not been established. The cultural grieving process is well documented and may be observed in the carving of a figure known as Ere Ibeji, which both represents the lost child and serves as a ritual point of contact with the soul of the deceased. YAKA 'M'BWOOLO' FETISH PROTECTION FIGURE #1280 ~ For African Art Gallery
YAKA M'BWOOLO/ POWER FIGURE#1280 Tribe: Yaka. Country: DRC. Material: Wood. Rope, Cloth, Fetish material. Size: 12.25" 31.1 cm) tall. Condition: Excellent. Item# 1280 This fetish figure(as called in older literature) or powere figure. Is attributed to the Yaka people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is figure that would generally be used by diviners in the healing and protection rituals they held. They were however used by individuals, families and entire villages too in the fight against evil, to destroy or weaken and evil spirits that were present, to help prevent and even cure sickness, to solidify contracts or agrrements between tribes people, and to repel bad deeds. The Yaka are and other African tribes are bound to a strange relationship with power figures. As they can be an ally or an enemy. The negatives are, they ... morecan be used to invoke illness, to harm or to take revenge by those who have been wronged. They are normally used in this fashion against'witches' or'sorcerers' On a positive note, they are generally used as a form of protection from misfortune, to heal and to bring success. How these figures differ from ancestral figures is that they derive their power from ritual use and the addition of'power or fetish materials' The application and'charging' of the fetish material to the figure is carried out by a specialist, usually the diviner who will then initiate the figure for its intended use. by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! Lega Standing Figure With One Raised Arm DR Congo African
Title, Lega Wooden Figure, Type of Object, Carving, Country of Origin, DR Congo, People, Lega, Materials, Wood. Pigment, Approximate Age, Second half 20th century, Dimensions, 10 inches x 4 inches W. Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, cracks and chips in head and torso Additional Information: Lega Standing Figure with one raised arm known as Iginga Katanda among the Lega of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The heart-shaped face with long T-shaped nose tubular eyes and incised mouth is painted in white pigment. This is a stylized and well-carved figure that well represents the art of the Lega people. This Lega carved figure represents a being called Katanda or otherwise known as “sleeping mat”. In most of the cases figures of this type have a janus head and the two arms raised and holes go through the body. This one ... morehas one raised arm and a few holes in the chest. The term Katanda carries with it the identity of someone who is lazy and sexually promiscuous as can be seen by the holes in the body or the ‘mat’ torso. The figure represents the social disorder that a person with these qualities can inflect upon a people and the village and therefore is a reminder of good behavior and proper morals. This person is compared to the red ants. Called Katanda ke ibazi, that destroyed everything on their ways. Among the Lega people of the Democratic Republic of Congo carved wooden figures are used during ceremonies of the Bwami Society, an initiation, and instructional society that governs and advises on moral and ethical conduct. The complex system of instruction, initiation, and advancement for both men and women in the Bwami society uses masks and figures to document the various levels of Bwami and to serve as badges validating the initiate knowledge of the secrets of Bwami and of their rank. Lega sculptures are usually carved in a highly distinctive style, with a heart-shaped concave face with a slightly bulging forehead, slit ‘coffee-bean’ eyes and an open narrow mouth.

Nigeria: Large Tribal used Rare African figure from Eket.
Large Tribal used Rare African figure from Eket. Nigeria. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. With color pigments. Height: 60 cm. The Eket. Numbering one million, are an Ibibio subgroup of farmers who do not fish unlike their Cross River neighbors. The main economic staple in the region is the palm oil. Which is extracted and sold to external markets. Every village is ruled by a group elders and the heads of extended families. Their decisions are enforced by members of the ekpo society who act as messengers of the ancestors. The Ekpo society requires that its initiates sponsor feasts for the town. Which foster the appearance of the redistribution of wealth by providing the poor with food and drink. In effect, this allows the disparity in wealth to be perpetuated in Ibibio society. Ekpo members are always masked when performing their ... morepolicing duties. And although their identities are almost always known, fear of retribution from the ancestors prevents most people from accusing those members who overstep their limits, effectively committing police brutality.

Unique Carved Wood African Art Sculpture. This piece came from a large collection of African art that I purchased in an estate sale. Roughly counting- 1 in base area(pic. 10) 7 +- in arms, etc in body(a few shown in pics 9& 11) saw cut mark at bottom of base(pic 12) Cracks do not effect sculpture's stability.it feels very sturdy. Also, sculpture does rock a little ... morebit as bottom isn't perfectly flat. Would be best to prop it up on one side to steady it. This is a complex figure design carved from one piece of wood. Damage/Repair, damage to mouth area on large figure. Scrapes and chips in places, Additional Information: This unusual and highly stylized ... moremask of a female figure standing on double masks is placed among the Yaure people of the Ivory Coast who are close neighbors of the Guro. Both groups share social practices and some stylistic elements in their masks and carvings. In fact the mask could come from the northern Guro where heavily abstracted masks representing females are danced or be simply an amalgamation of style elements from both Guro and Yaure and the better-known Baule. It is interesting that the mask has been repainted numerous times indicating its age and long use and by doing so further blurs traditional stylistic identifiers associated with these two peoples of Cote d’ivoire. But among the Yaure the darkly painted mask is used primarily for the Lo ceremony and at times may dance in the Je ritual celebration that cleanses the village after the death of an individual. Yaure masks can also represent ‘Yu’ a spiritual power. The standing female figure is finely carved and shown wearing double ivory bracelets on each wrist and at one time was covered in a white pigment or white clay the residue of which is still seen in crevices of the figure. Though the mask has two faces carved on it

Found among the Dogon from the Southern Cliff. This figure, representation of ... morea nommo, was used as a shrine piece. Dogon art is not a single fixed style as has been often characterized in discussions of their sculpture, for the age of Dogon art extends to the past as early as the 12th century and continues to be created in the present with a number of sub-styles measured against the core of an identifiable Dogon art and style. The Dogon interchange stylistic elements with neighboring groups producing an interesting hybridism in some of their interesting sub-styles. This sculpture reflects an influence that neighboring groups can have on the well defined core of Dogon sculpture. West of the Dogon heartland the Dogon interact with the other major art producing people of Mali, the Bamana(Bambara) A Bamana blacksmith could easily have carved the figure. such Dogon figures represent ancestors identified to an individual, family, village or region. As an ancestor the figure represents either a familial ancestor or one of the original eight Nommo who descended to earth to create us, the world and continue to be interested in the affairs of man. BAKONGO AFRICAN ART FIGURE #2008 ~ For African Art Gallery
BAKONGO FIGURE#2008 Tribe: BaKongo. Country: DRC. Material: Wood. Size: 12" 29.2 cm) Tall. Condition: Good. Item# 2008 Provenance: Ex. James E Adkins Estate Collection(Florida. USA) The Kongo may number about three million people. Present in three countries– the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Angola and the Congo Republic– the Kongo occupy the region at the mouth of the Congo River. Numerous subgroups go to form the vast Kongo cultural complex, among which are the Vili, the Woyo and the Yombe. These tribes produce a diversity of artistic styles, with Kongo art being one of the best known. The Kongo demonstrate the extreme complexity of their traditions on major occasions. Such as the investiture of a chief or at funerals. The Kongo pantheon was small: one all-powerful god who gave healing powers to the king, to the nganga, and to ... morethe heads of cults. Besides their textiles of great renown, the Kongo had a funerary art of decorated steles and funerary statues in stone, very often depicting the chief seated cross-legged in a posture of reflection. Some of these statues were placed on tombs to aid the spirits of the dead to join the world of the deceased. Wood sculptures represent royal wives, hunters, musicians, and healers. Their postures vary: sometimes they kneel in a position of respect, the head bent slightly backwards; women might be depicted seated with the child they hold by the neck or whom they are nursing. The cheeks are round, the face, carefully rendered, is realistic. The patina is smooth, the bust scarified. Elaborate geometrical patterns occur on the pedestal or the body, where they may be mingled with fine scarification marks. The figures were used to ward off danger to mothers during delivery and to protect the health of the child. The commemorative statues known as phemba were designed for women who had lost a child and wanted another. These carvings, generally sophisticated and very graceful, were thought to favor such a happy event. by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out
