Title, Igbo Female Figure Presenting Breasts Nigeria Africa, Type of Object, Sculpture. Alusi Shrine Figure Country of Origin, Nigeria, People, Igbo, ... moreMaterials, Wood. Pigment, cotton cloth, Approximate Age, Mid 20th Century, Dimensions, 25.5 inches x 7 inches, Overall Condition, Poor.  Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, cracks throughout the body. Some cracks with repairs(see feet, arms) chipped hairstyle, stains, Additional Information: This marvelously carved and old figure comes from the Igbo people. This sculpture has the body patterned with local traditions of scarification known as ‘Ichi marks’ cut into their foreheads signifying their status as an adult Igbo person. The white color of the face shows the figure to be a spirit and the red color placed on the legs adds an aesthetic quality. The Crest depicting traditional Igbo hairstyles surmounts the head. Scarification covers the face and the abdomen identifying the figure as a mature and senior woman of great beauty as do the bracelets. This sculpture shows some age as it has been repainted a number of times over the years. Though eroded by time and termites this sculpture reflects the skills of the Igbo artist in creating images capable of speaking to us over time and distance. Compromising one of the largest ethnic groupings in Nigeria the Igbo are well known for their sculptural tradition and vibrant masking performances. Living north of the Niger River their art has an extended history reaching back at least 14 hundred years to the wonderful bronzes found at Igbo Ukwu demonstrating a sculpture tradition that extends to the present. MAGNIFICENT AND VERY RARE ZIGUA Tribe. Anthropomorphic Figure(Tanzania) Such extraordinary figures were used during initiations as visual teaching aids ... moreand sometimes represent ancestors and spirits. Item Description Tribe: ZIGUA Country: Tanzania The ZIGUA people live in North-East Tanzania alongside Pare. Chaga, Shamba tribes. Until recently, very little research existed about the artistic output of this area which apparently shows a strong stylistic relationship with the Malagasy and Batak aesthetic coming from Indonesia. It is quite characteristic that clay and wood figures coming from this region are covered with a piece of cloth or leather impregnated with liquid substances giving them‘mummified’ look. They tend to be hollowed so that magic substances can be inserted. Such figures are used during initiation ceremonies into secret societies or by healers during curing rites. The ZIGUA produce more realistic artifacts than other tribes in their region. Their wooden statues are similar to SUKUMA who live in Central-Western Tanzania. This statue is made of hard wood and cloth impregnated with some sort of natural liquid resin. Surface shows that they were used in conjunction with various potions which clearly left behind marks and rich patina. Though it can’t stand on its own but has to be placed next to some supporting object or surface(wall) it still radiates energy and dynamism. Immensely aged, it has scratches, marks, cracks, combination of which are giving particular strength in appearance(even scary) making it an excellent decorator’s piece. If you are looking for a'tourist' or contemporary memorabilia work, this is not the right choice for you. Please note that the payment must be processed before shipping and that such shipping is at buyer's expense(actual cost) Shipping to mainland US is $42.00. Provenance: Chipata. As it is shown on this example. Most Ikenga are generally sculpted as a male anthropomorphic figure with rams horns rising vertically from the head and holding staff or knife in hands. Such small figures are used for ... morepersonal protection and are often carried hidden. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. Height: 25 cm. ed African mask from Igbo. Nigeria. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. With color pigments. Height: 64 cm. Living mainly in the forested areas of south-west Nigeria. On both sides of the Niger River the Igbo number some ten million individuals. Mainly farmers and merchants, they also hunt and fish. They are subdivided into thirty-three subgroups and are spread out among about two hundred villages scattered through the thick forest or semifertile marshland. Only on the northern and western edges of the area, under influence from Igala and Benin, are hereditary rulers found. The heads of families form the council of elders, which shares its power with numerous secret societies. These societies exercise great political and social influence. They are highly hierarchical, their members passing from one level to the next. There is strong social pressure toward individual distinction, and men can move upward through successive grades by demonstrating their achievements and their generosity. The lack of overall centralization among the Igbo-speaking peoples has been conducive to the development of a great variety of art styles and cultural practices. The earliest sculpture known from Igboland is from the village of Ibo Ukwu. Where the grave of a man of distinction and a ritual store, dating from the 9th century AD, contained both chased copper objects and elaborate castings of leaded bronze. Ibo sculpture is subject to rather strict rules: the figures are generally frontal, symmetrical, and upright, with legs slightly spread, arms held away from the body, and hands stretched forward, palms open. Proportions are true to

Figures such as this represent a beautiful young woman. A maiden. She is identified as being a"Jonyeleni" a member of the Jo society, a woman's and men's initiation society among the Bamana. Young women will carry sculptures such as this from village to village indicating that they are no longer children, but mature women ready and available for marriage. This takes place on a seven year cycle. These sculptures, carried by the young women, serve as paradigms of beauty and well being, reflecting the physical attributes of ideal beauty. This idealization of beauty is reflected in the firmness of the body, the pointed breasts, as well as the markings throughout the body. This figure also characterizes the essence of womanhood and of social cohesion that results from the order and structure of the Jo woman's society. Gabon: Extremly Rare Old Tribal used African Fang figure in bed.
Gabon: Extremly Rare Old Tribal used African Fang figure in bed. Hand carved from a single piece of wood. Height: 66 cm. The people that are called“Fang” in the geographic or ethnographic literature number 800.000 and constitute a vast mosaic of village communities, established in a large zone of Atlantic equatorial Africa comprising Cameroon, continental equatorial Guinea and nearly the whole north of Gabon, on the right bank of the Ogowe River. Historically the Fang were itinerant, and it is relatively recently that they have settled into this broad area. The migratory existence of the Fang prohibited the creation of ancestral shrines at gravesites. Instead, the remains of the important dead, in the form of the skull and other bones, were carried from place to place in a cylindrical bark box. The great rain forest region where the Fang ... moresettled is a plateau of middle altitude, cut by innumerable waters with falls and rapids rendering navigation for the most part impossible, and with a climate typically equatorial. Fang are principally hunters but also agriculturists. Their social structure is based on a clan, a group of individuals with a common ancestor, and on the family.

Small Folk Art Slave or African Farmer Figure Very Old Welded Iron
This is a small folk art figurine of either a slave or an African farmer- it is difficult to say for sure, but I think it is a figure of a slave because of the clothing painted on him. Of welded iron with a dark patina and handpainted clothing. Great little historical figurine with a definite African art style. Even if it is of an American slave. About 2 inches tall by 2.25 inches wide. Great for the art collector of period type art/ folk art. I do not know how old. But I would say very old. lot of SIX African Kenyan ebony carved statues: 5 are full-figure, one is a bust
Six African ebony carved statues. Three are labeled“made in Kenya. Two others are stylistically very similar to two that are labeled as made in Kenya. The last is ebony and African in style. Though I cannot guarantee it– or any of the non-labeled ones– were definitely made in Kenya. See the 92 pictures below. Due to photobucket being annoying. They're most logically browsed through with the left arrow. They were acquired in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Not as one lot. Since then they have been very infrequently dusted. Nothing else has been done to clean, maintain, or restore them. As you see in the pictures above. I’ve numbered them to make it easy for you to tell them apart in the pictures below. As well as to match descriptions with the pictures. So… 1: 14” tall. The body shows no indication of being a female form. Holding a spear on its ... moreleft side. Cross-hatched clothing over most of body. With smooth upper right torso and arms. Some wear on the head, upper part of the spear, and scroll( in its right hand. Labeled on the back of the base GENUINE EBONY MADE IN KENYA. Base is essentially triangular. And roughly 1.5” 2: 13.25” tall. Stylistically very similar to#1. With many features in reverse. Quite likely part of a pair. Cross-hatched clothing over most of body, with smooth upper left torso and arms. And holding a spear on its right side. Left hand flat against body. The body shows no indication of being a female form. Minor wear on the top of the spear. Labeled on the bottom $4 00. Base is essentially triangular. And roughly 1.25” 3: 13.75” tall. Female form with naked breasts. Headpiece cross-hatched on back. Carved with lines in one direction on front. Cross-hatched clothing from below breasts to knees. Base has a large X pattern and is not any particular shape. Wear on nose, left breast, and small discolored spot on left shin. Base is about 1” tall, and has two labels: one is HAND CARVED Made in Kenya. And over that is one from a store Wooden Onion 83 LOYD STREET UNDERGROUND ATLANTA. 4: Sli
ARTIST CREATED HAND CARVED SOLID WOOD AFRICAN GIRAFFE FIGURE
ARTIST CREATED HAND CARVED SOLID WOOD AFRICAN GIRAFFE FIGURE- 10" HIGH. 3" WIDE, AND 2" DEEP.THIS IS A TRUE WORK OF ART- ALTHOUGH I AM NOT POSITIVELY SURE, IT APPEARS UPON CLOSE UP VISUAL EXAMINATION THAT THIS PIECE IS ONE SOLID HAND CARVED ITEM, IN OTHER WORDS- IT APPEARS AS THOUGH THE ENTIRE PIECE OF ART WAS ORIGINALLY FROM ONE SOLID PIECE OR BLOCK OF WOOD, IT DOES NOT APPEAR ANYWHERE ON THE PIECE THAT IT HAS BEEN GLUED/ OR ATTACHED. I AM NOT AN EXPERT ON WOOD- FOR SURE I KNOW IT IS NOT OAK OR PINE, BUT IT COULD BE MAPLE OR BIRCH OR MAHOGANY- FOR SURE I AM NOT SURE WHAT TYPE OF WOOD IT IS! THE GIRAFFE MARKINGS THROUGHOUT THE LARGE AND SMALL GIRAFFE FIGURES APPEAR TO BE BURNT INTO THE WOOD TO CREATE THE REALISTIC MARKINGS.

Attye Lagoon Female Figure with Barrel on Head African
Title, Attye Lagoon Female Figure With gunpowder Barrel on Head, Type of Object, Carving, Country of Origin, Lagoon area. Ivory Coast, People, Attye, Materials, Wood. Pigment, fabric belt, Approximate Age, Mid 20 Century, Dimensions, Height is 28.5" Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, stain. Chips, old bug damage, Additional Information: This is a MAGNIFICENT carving! She has all eight of her pegs intact. Old insect damage on one side has received indigenous repair. Serene face with Mona Lisa smile. The statues of the Attye are some of the most ravishing in all of Africa. Combining the best features of Baule sculpture with a unique"Lagoon" appearance. The bulbous arms and legs, serene face and body shape common to the Attye show definite Baule influence, but there is stronger and bolder execution, daring use of abstraction, ... moreand greater volumes. The effect can be downright extraordinary. Having an area about the size of Germany. Côte d'Ivoire is bordered on the south by the Atlantic Ocean, on the west by Liberia and Guinea, to the north by Mali and Burkina Faso, and on the east by Ghana. The Attye are one of the so-called Lagoon people of Cote d’Ivoire. This area is a mixed association of 12 different language groups. Little is known about their art. It is recorded that Christian religion had destroyed most of their sculpture in the nineteenth century. Arts from the Lagoon area are rare and difficult to attribute. They are all related but, if studied closely, one may find elements that facilitate identification. Attye style is recognized by the elaborate coiffure elegantly raised, muscular legs and arms and the elongation of their body, and elaborate keloid scarification. The female carvings have tiny protruding plugs, which can be twisted out. Patina varies from darker to lighter with traces of white pigment. The uses of the Attye figures are not clearly known. It seems like these figures had multi-purposes. Their role in the Poro and Lo society is unclear. For some sources

Hollow Wood Cells Because of the misunderstanding regarding hollow wood cells. A brief explanation is needed. Any person dating carvings has many criteria to determine age. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. The study of providence shows it takes 250 to 300 years for a dry climate stored Dogon piec

Divided in two parts by the Niger River, constitutes the greater part of the western and southern Mali of today. The dry savanna permits no more than a subsistence economy, and the soil produces, with some difficulty, corn, millet, sorghum, rice, and beans. Their traditions include six male societies, each with its own type of mask. Initiation for men lasts for seven years and ends with their symbolic death and their rebirth. Nearly every Bamana man had to pass through these societies in succession, until, upon reaching the highest rank, he had acquired a comprehensive knowledge of ancestral traditions. The Jo society has become a sort of framework for other initiation society. Until a few decades ago, initiation was obligatory for every young man. Jo initiations take place every seven years, after candidates receive six years of special training. During this time, the young men go through a ritual death and live one week in the bush before returning to the village. There they publicly perfo

Authentic Tribal African colonial figure statue
Colonial Figures from the Baule Tribe of the Ivory Coast. West Africa. The size is about 40" Colonial" figures are carved European-like spirit mates. When a person(a woman in most instances) described their other-world mates to the carver to embody them. They revealed their ideal mates as manifesting these European(mostly French Colonial) characteristics. For example, if a woman wanted an atheletic husband, she might have a soccer player carved; or if she wished for a bus driver, businessman or pilot, she might have one of these carved. These figures illustrate how the Ivory Coast Baule interpret and reinterpret the colonial presence in art. Originally these figures were intended as icons. Symbols of social status, evident through the use of brightly colored paints. Today, these colonial representations symbolize far more than the ... morematerial exchange between the West and Africa; they represent the linkages between and perceptions of the colonizer and the colonized. They are kept in small shrines, lovingly cared for. They are often used as fetishes to attract a member of the opposite sex with qualities that one desires. They may also be used a guides or oracles- as the Baule believe that they can communicate with their other world or dream mates while they sleep- seeking advice and guidance. No two are alike and they are carved by master carvers specifically for one individual. Froo www.froo.com | Froo Cross Sell. Fon Figure Abstract Benin African Art SALE Was $90
Title, Fon Figure. Abstract, Dark Patina, Benin,African, Type of Object, Carving statue. Figure, Country of Origin, Republic of Benin(former Dahomey) People, Fon, Materials, Wood. Pigment, Approximate Age, 20th century, Dimensions, height is 17.5 inches, Overall Condition, Fair, Damage/Repair, minor cracks and chips. Old insect damage, Additional Information: This highly abstracted standing male figure without facial details and coverd with black patina poises a problem of identity and location. It shares with a number of different ethnic groupings strong similarities such as the Fon and the Akan. The figure has a number of traits that are found among the Fon. The oval head. Short neck, arms close to the body and the shape of the legs, and the dark surface all have counterparts in sculpture from the Fon. The absence of facial features is ... morealso common in Fon sculpture especially in Power figure called Bochio. It is challenging to determine the use and functions of the present carving. This figure could have been a figure in a shrine where. But it is missing all the additional magic elements particular to the Bochio sculpture. It is interesting that a figure by itself has little or no meaning. And in fact these are usually purchased in the market. They assume their magical attributes only after being empowered by a diviner, who will usually attach materials which have been gathered by the"patient. Such figures are known as power figures or"fetishes" Called Bochio by the Fon and used in the context of Vodun ritual practices. The use of fetishes, large and small, among the Vodun practitioners of Benin is widespread, and in fact they are a vital part of daily life in many villages. A fetish Bochio is, in its simplest terms, a prayer: a remote object, ritually empowered by a priest, used as an intermediary vehicle for change. Once a fetish has entered the market, there is no way to know exactly what it was used for. The most frequent use of a Bochio is to drive away the meddling forces of witchcraft, whic

Several cracks in head and other places in the body, large chip in rear of left leg, Zande Standing Female Figure Oregon Collection Provenance: From ... morean old Oregon collection. Certificate of provenance available! Additional Information: The Azande(Zande) figures the most famous are known as Yanda. Served to represent ancestral or protective spirits who looked over the members of an Azande cult known as Mani(This cult was also shared by close neighbors the Mangbetu) But the present figure does not belong to the category of Yanda. Its size and its form seem different for the ordinary Yanda figures. Our figure is large and made of a light-colored wood. It could be an ancestor figure. Zande ancestors figures are rare and usually carved in pair. They are shrine piece and used to honor the ancestors, to ask for their blessings and assistance during the ancestor cult, and in various rituals intended to protect families, to bring well being, health, and wealth to people. This unusual figure shows some use and age. The surface color comes from the magical application of roots. Plants, bark and seeds applied during the ritual. Recommended Reading: E.E. Evans-Pritchard. Although common stylistic characteristics– such as a tendency towards stylization– are apparent on the statues. As a general characterization of Dogon statues, one could say that they render the human body in a simplified way, reducing it to its essentials. Some are extremely elongated with emphasis on geometric forms. The subjective impression is one of immobility with a mysterious sense ... moreof a solemn gravity and serene majesty, although conveying at the same time a latent movement. Dogon sculpture recreates the silhouettes of the Tellem, featuring raised arms and a thick patina made of blood and millet beer. The Dogon style has evolved into a kind of cubism: ovoid head. Squared shoulders, tapered extremities, pointed breasts, forearms, and thighs on a parallel plane, hairdos stylized by three or four incised lines. Dogon sculptures serve as a physical medium in initiations and as an explanation of the world. They serve to transmit an understanding to the initiated, who will decipher the statue according to the level of their knowledge. zyama.com) Mali The 400.000 Dogon live 180 miles south of Timbuktu on the cliffs of Bandiagara, which dominate the plains for over 150 miles. Its raised knee and a full abdomen is naturalistically rendered in a stylized replica wearing a skirt with a squared design patterns. The decorative pattern on the skirt as well as the bow at the side are similarly found on the seated figure from Tada. The pesent figure holds a carved horn in his left hand and the snake in his right hand. The facial features are classic Yoruba and similar to figures found in the wonderfully cast bronze memorial portraits found at Ife. It also is cast with the same care and detail as those early figures from early Ife. The large hole in the back of head was an opening necessary during the casting process. This figure is a replica after early Ife and reflects the skill of the contemporary Yoruba bronze caster. Additional Reading: Willett. F. Ife in the History of We

The Mangbetu sculptures symbolize the ideal of male or female beauty. This beauty is translated by the elongated. Wrapped head with an elaborate hairstyle(chignon) and by the geometric patterns and the body painting that are observed on the real individual in their personal appearance. Most of them portrayed existing people. Usually female figures would have a hand in front of the sexual organ and in the back. This is probably a gesture of decency from women. In some cases the sex of the female figure was covered with"cache-sexe" or a piece of barkcloth. The statue presented here is a rare example of an art seldom seen on the market. The 40.000 Mangbetu are of Sudanese origin. They moved across the border into North East Democratic Republic of Congo(DRC) several hundred years ago and live just south of the Zande and west of the Boa-two groups that also moved into the DRC from the Sudan. Damage/Repair, wear. Chips, scratches, shallow cracks, Additional Information: This well used arved Janus figure with bowl in the top comes from the Hemba people who today live on ... morethe savannah in the southeast region of the Democratic of Congo along the Lualaba River. This male and female pair known as Kabeja is owned by the clan head. Fumu Mwela. Kabeja figures were not strictly considered to be portraits as they depicted rank, social status and ethnic identity through stance, hair-style and dress. The warm colored patination and encrustation in small plces come as a result of extended use through offerings and touching and indicate some age and long use. The Hemba are broken into a number of chiefdoms with local styles of carving that share similarities but differ in details of sculpting and in the use of body marking. Among the Hemba there are secret societies called Bukazanzi for men and Bukibilo for the women that serve to balance the power of the clan chief. Therefore this joined sculpture of male and female joined together reflects the balance of power between the clan head and the men and women in Hemba society. These figures are present at clan meetings led by the chief(Fumu Mwela) where the figures received offerings and served as intercessors between the living and the dead and to recognize lineage heads and document title to land. At the end of the treatment, the patient or client will keep the figurine in his/her house to ensure good long-term relationship with the spirit and get permanent blessings from him. The history of the Luba can be traced back at least 500 years. And they have dominated much of southern part of the Congo during most of this timespan. While there are dozens of art-producing peoples of Congolese origin who have contributed significantly to the recognition of West African art, the Luba, along with their closely related neighbors the Hemba, are debatably the most important of them all, with many masterpieces scattered throughout the world. In fact, much of the art from the southern half of the Congo will contain Luba elements, showing that indeed imitation is the highest form of flattery. They sometimes create statues of considerable proportions. Though these normally are used by diviners and fall in the"fetish" category,M'bwoolo, they also carve large ancestor figures like the one offered here. It is possible that this figure had a divination purpose, because of the mirror presence in the abdomen and the added substances. African Igbo / Ibo "Edjo" Warrior Shrine Figure 5' 7" Tall
African Igbo/ Ibo"Edjo" Warrior Shrine Figure 5' 7" Tall African Igbo/Ibo Warrior Shrine Figure Igbo(Ibo) Shrine Figure Nigeria Carved wood. 20th century 66.5 inches tall and 10 inches wide The IBO are one of the largest ethnic groups in southeastern Nigeria. Shrine figures like this are called alusi or edjo and represent tutelary deities and ancestors. The triple line/box design down the chest of this figure tells us the ancestor being worshipped was a high-ranking military male or warrior. Death and afterlife play a large role in the customs& traditions of the Ibo. They believe all living things have two souls(the eternal ego or“maw” and the life force that dies with the body( Nkpuruk-obi) Both entities are karma. Both souls leave with the last breath, the“maw” takes on the form of a ghost, shadow or reflection, therefore ... moreno one wants to walk on a shadow. Some Ibo carry mirrors so that evil spirits will strike it and not their bodies. After death, a ferryman ghost( Asasabu) brings good souls across the river of death to be reincarnated into trees, animals and other living things. Because they believe in and respect the worship of spirits. Funeral ceremonies can take years with feasts, music, plays and pilgrimages. The Ibo believe their ancestors always watch them, and in order to pray to them and have them respond well, they throw food on the ground to feed and appease them. The“Fene Bene” or chief sets out drink and food for ancestors every eight days. It is against tribal law to speak ill of ancestors( Nduen Forbara) The Ibo were receptive to Christianity and education under British colonization and missionary influence. They played a major role in securing Nigerian independence from Britain in 1960. But many Ibo fled to the east, seceded from Nigeria in 1967 and called their government the Republic of Biafra. In 1970, civil war defeated Biafra. See: Herbert M.Cole. Igbo Art: Community and Cosmos, UCLA, 1984 Due to the size of this piece anyone outside the UK could you please contact us
Dogon Mask with Carved Figure on Top Mali African SALE Was $99

Paint, Approximate Age, 20th Century Dimensions, Height is 25 inches. Overall Condition, Fair to good, Damage/Repair, broken arm of figure. Chips, shallow cracks, Additional Information: A mask from Dogon with its stylized human face surmounted by a standing female figure. This figure has its arms upraised in Tellem style(one arm is missing here) It represents an important ancestor. The oral tradition of the Dogon tells us that they originated on the west bank of the Niger River about 1000 years ago. They moved west at some point. Into parts of what is now Mossi territory in Burkina Faso, but chose to return east due to pressure to assimilate into the Mossi Kingdom. This time, around 1500, they found a place ... morealmost unreachable by invaders on horseback-the arid but imposing Bandiagara Cliffs. Here most of the Dogon have remained to this day, as one of Africa's most spiritual people. Dogon family dwellings, as well as their shrines and granaries, are constructed in a uniquely haunting way, leaving even the most jaded observer spellbound, in what can only be described as a"magic kingdom. The Dogon have taken the time-honored worship of ancestors to new heights, and their huge pantheon of astounding and colorful carvings reflect this. It is possible today for tourists and scholars to arrange masked dances for public view, but these dances are for entertainment only, and only a few of the art-forms are actually revealed. Ritually meaningful ceremonies are not shared with the public. The Dogon have even made their funerals a unique spectacle. Accompanied by the chanting of Binu priests, the body is reportedly lowered over the jagged cliffs into its final resting place, as dancers venerate the life of the deceased. Quite a way to enter the heavens! The important PBS series"Africa" did a beautiful segment on the Dogon and Fulani. Recommended Reading: Laude's AFRIC
