Often called ‘fetishes’ in the West these powerful figures have different titles according to their purpose and who owns them. For example figures known as Matomba prevent and cure illnesses and other figures identified as nkira ntswo, represent ancestors and were used during a ritual to propitiate nature spirits. Figures are not considered complete or powerful until given energy through the application of the magical substances into the stomach cavity, or placed as a ball around the figure. Teke figures are magically'switched on’ by the ngaa, the local ritual specialist after which they will be addressed and given offerings that through time add to the power that the figure contains. The facial scarification of vertical lines known as mabina are used by a number of the smaller subgroups such as the Mfinu or the Yanzi who share similar sculptural styles with the Teke. This figure male figure does not have magical materials attached to it’s body, but it has been covered with the red powder which has also magical attributes. During the eighteenth century, the queen, Abla Poku, had to lead her people west to the shores of the Comoe, the land of Senufo. In order to cross the river. She sacrificed her own son. This sacrifice was the origin of the name Baule, for baouli means“the child has died. Now about one million Baule occupy a part of the eastern Côte d'Iv. between the Komoé and Bandama rivers that is both forest and savanna land. Baule society was characterized by extreme individualism. Great tolerance, a deep aversion toward rigid political structures, and a lack of age classes, initiation, circumcision, priests, secret societies, or associations with hierarchical levels. Each village was independent from the others and made its own decisions under the presiding presence of a council of elders. Everyone participated in discussions, including slaves. Chest, and belly body painted in white The Punu. Like their relatives the Shira and the Lumbo, fled the Fang and settled in the equatorial forests of southern Gabon. Little is known about their history or way of life. They do appear to have connections to the Fang and Kota in their religious and ancestral rituals. The Punu are known for their maiden spirit masks with white face used in the context of the Mukuji society. Most of the known Punu statues are small works with face painted in white as on their masks, thought to be used as guardian figures. Sculpted figures among the Punu have been identified as prestige and magical figures during special ceremonies. They were placed in close proximity to funerary bundles of revered ancestors. On this figure. The white pigment as well as the closed eyes reflect the spirituality and the face of the figure with its high eyebrow and forehead markings are based upon the marvelously carved Mukudj masks active among the Punu. Mukudj masks were worn by male dancers at funerals of honored elder males in which the white face portrays an idealized female with a well defined helmet-like hair style that crowns her head and surrounds her face. Though the face has a calm expression the figure is shown in a dance that is of great vigor and movement and she maintains her sense of composure and calm. The elegant coiffure and body and the face marking portray the figure as a mature woman of great composure and beauty, balancing action to an extraordinary sense of reserve. This auction is for an authentic antique figural African Art bronze statue from the Dogon Tribe in Mali. The bronze is of a tribesman carrying what I ... morebelieve is a snake in his right hand. The man appears to be an elder. As he has a long beard. The bronze has absolutely amazing patina and has started to green in places. This piece was found in an estate auction in which the man had hundreds of pieces of African art, all museum quality! This bronze also includes a specially made stand which fits around the man's abdomen and his feet rest on a 1 inch black painted wood block for 360 degree viewing! The bronze(without the stand) is approximately 8 inches tall and 2 inches wide. The stand adds about 1 inch to the total height. The Dogon Tribe: The Dogon are an ethnic group living in the central plateau region of the country of Mali. In the West of the Continent of Africa, south of the Niger bend. The population numbers between 400.000 and 800,000. The Dogon are best known for their religious traditions. Their mask dances, wooden sculpture(making the bronze more rare! and their architecture. Dogon art is primarily sculpture. Dogon art revolves around religious values. Ideals, and freedoms. Dogon sculptures are not made to be seen publicly, and are commonly hidden from the public eye within the houses of families, sanctuaries, or kept with the Hogon. The importance of secrecy is due to the symbolic meaning behind the pieces and the process by which they are made. Themes found throughout Dogon sculpture consist of figures with raised arms. Superimposed bearded figures. Horsemen, stools with caryatids, women with children, figures covering their faces, women grinding pearl millet, women bearing vessels on their heads, donkeys bearing cups, musicians, dogs, quadruped-shaped troughs or benches, figures bending from the waist, mirror-images, aproned figures. And standing figures. Signs of other contacts and origins are evident in Dogon art. The Dogon people were not the first inhabitants of the cliffs of Bandiaga

All members of this group originally came from an area to the north and migrated in various complex patterns throughout the last several centuries. Fulani traders moving steadily southwards into Cameroon forced the Bamum into their current location during the 17th century. The Bamum are also one of the first peoples in Africa to develop a writing system under the auspices of King Njoya at the end of the 19th century. Njoya was able to maintain his status as a ruler under German indirect colonial rule but was forced into exile when the French took over in 1916. The kingship has since been restored. The peoples of the Grasslands reserve the highest allegiance for their lineage ancestors. Ancestral spirits are embodied in the skulls of the deceased ancestors. The skulls are in the possession of the eldest living male in each lineage, and all members of an extended family recognize the skulls as common heritage

Kongo maternity figure, African Tribal Creations, Congo, art, DRC, mother, wood
An African Tribal Creations gallery NO RESERVE AUCTION Normal.dotm 0 0 1 252 1441 Full Sail 12 2 1769 12.0 0 false 18 pt 18 pt 0 0 false false false The Kongo people are distributed throughout the Zaire River Basin. From the modern day Republic of the Congo down through northern Angola. Known for their many art forms, as well as filed, sharpened teeth among Kongo women, the Kongo are a large and diverse ethnic group, consisting of a number of smaller subgroups. Art and sculpture is made for a wide variety of reasons among these people. Unique to the Kongo's region are the'nkisi, carvings considered extremely powerful by the people, and even by British colonialists who ordered them destroyed when found, fearing that they could be an effective resistance to the colonization of Africa. These"fetishes" are adorned with nails, ... moreor blades of metal, and are the only figures in African art embellished in this way. Nkisis aside, however, the Kongo produce many different styles of art, each of which have gained substantial attention and notoriety from collectors. The maternity figure itself is an extremely important form of art produced throughout much of the African continent. And a form of this figure can be found in the majority of art producing ethnic groups. Some are rendered as part animal, some strictly human. Some are produced as clear representations, some are highly abstract. They are carved from wood and cast in metal. To the African woman, motherhood is the single most important role in life. This beautiful feminine maternity figure displays traditional Kongo styling. Especially in the facial features. The woman is seated cross-legged, cradling her infant gently above her lap. Her breasts are heavily marked with scarification marks, and her coiffure is tall and rounded, a common style in Kongo sculpture. The body of the figure is lithe and thin, with graceful curves, and rests on a base that allows the piece to stand on its own without support. The patina is a light chocolatey brown, and pigmen

Chokwe Ancestor Figure With Thumb Piano DR Congo Angola African

Pigment, copper alloy, cotton cloth, Approximate Age, second half 20th century, Dimensions, Height: 30 inches H. x 8 inches W. Overall Condition, Poor. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, cracks in base repaired with glue. Shallow cracks in places, some oxidation on metal, chips, scratches, ... morewear. Slightly bent. But stands well. Additional Information: This standing male figure playing a piano thumb comes from the Chokwe. This is a strong and stylized figure with interesting details such as the impressive coiffure with projections. The body with muscles and the exaggerate feet. A musician figure is a well-known theme in Chokwe sculpture for it represents an ancestor in one of the most important role in the society: a musician wearing the headdress of an early Chokwe culture hero. Musicians play a prominent role in Chokwe society and are often represented in their art in various ways and in very dynamic poses including playing a drum or a thumb piano. And grinding tobacco. The large headdress is that of a senior Chokwe chief. This is a superb carving with a typical Chokwe treatment of the figure stance and face features. This figure was obviously cared for and well used as the brown patina and the softening of edges indicate. This carving has it's own character and presence and would well be a good addition to include in a collection. Recommended Reading: Jordan. M. Each lineage's ancestors were located in family shrines where memorials or reliquary boxes known as byeri. Containing their bones were under the care of an elder known as the Esa. Ijo/Jukan Figure, South Western Nigeria, African Tribal Arts, Figures
african Item: Ijo Figure Man Smoking a Calabash Pipe Size: 34 x 9 x 8 cm Medium: Timber Carving Origin: Nigeria(see ethnographical notes below) Numbering 200.000 to 350,000, the Ijo people live mainly in the creeks and mangrove swamps of the Niger Delta area. Being fishermen and traders they depend upon the water for food and communication. The Ijo are divided into two groups: the Kalabari-Ijo. East of the Nun River, and the western or central Ijo, who live to the west and northwest of this river. The art of both groups is characterized by a schematized approach, whereby most works of the central Ijo evince a higher degree of stylization and abstraction than those done in the Kalabari regional style. Yet also found in the western area are more realistic masks in the form of fish or animals. Which are worn on the forehead. However, the best ... moreknown forehead masks of the central Ijo, which embody water spirits(owuamapu) contain depictions of human heads built up of geometric shapes and combined with zoomorphic or abstract elements. Besides ancestors and deceased local heroes. Water spirits play an important role in the religious ideas of the Ijo. They believe that these spirits are like humans in terms of their strengths and weaknesses and that before their birth, human beings live among them. Once born. The Ijo maintain contact with them through prayers in order to gain their favors. Celebrations in honor of the water spirits lasting several days are held annually, either at the beginning of the year or the time of high water, in order to gain the spirits’ goodwill and insure the group’s welfare. In the course of festivities various masqueraders embodying the water spirits perform, and the presence of the spirits, by whom they feel possessed, is manifested in the intensity of their dancing. The Ijo masks for the cults of the water spirits are made in the form of aquatic animals. Especially hippopotamus and crocodiles. The western Ijo use the figures, in which the head of the household is represented upon a highl
