Chest, and belly body painted in white The Punu. Like their relatives the Shira and the Lumbo, fled the Fang and settled in the equatorial forests of southern Gabon. Little is known about their history or way of life. They do appear to have connections to the Fang and Kota in their religious and ancestral rituals. The Punu are known for their maiden spirit masks with white face used in the context of the Mukuji society. Most of the known Punu statues are small works with face painted in white as on their masks, thought to be used as guardian figures. The Bamum are also one of the first peoples in Africa to develop a writing system under the auspices of King Njoya at the end of the 19th century. Njoya was able to maintain his status as a ruler under German indirect colonial rule but was forced into exile when the French took over in 1916. The kingship has since been restored. The peoples of the Grasslands reserve the highest allegiance for their lineage ancestors. Ancestral spirits are embodied in the skulls of the deceased ancestors. The skulls are in the possession of the eldest living male in each lineage, and all members of an extended family recognize the skulls as common heritage

Ndengese are said to be from the Mongo group and claim to have been in the area before the Kuba arrived in the center of Democratic Republic of Congo(former Zaire) The Ndengese are related to Nkutshu who are also mongo descent. They share cultural and artistic similarities with the Mongo and the Kuba. According to some traditions. The Ndengese are descended from the Etotoshi, oldest son of Woot, who is said to be the founder of the Kuba kingdom. Upon the investiture of a Kuba king, the Kuba must go to the Ndengese to get the sacred earth, even in this century. The Ndengese are patrilineal. The king Etoshi is aided by a council of elders and reigns over local chiefs His power is counterbalanced by that of the blacksmith, hunting, and secret societies. The Ndengese are farmers, hunters and fishermen. Religion is tied to the various status societies. The chief and notables in power play a major role in village rituals. Additional Information: This standing male figure playing a piano thumb comes from the Chokwe. This is a strong and stylized figure with interesting details such as the impressive coiffure with projections. The body with muscles and the exaggerate feet. A musician figure is a well-known theme in Chokwe sculpture for it represents an ancestor in one of the most important role in the society: a musician wearing the headdress of an early Chokwe culture hero. Musicians play a prominent role in Chokwe society and are often represented in their art in various ways and in very dynamic poses including playing a drum or a thumb piano. And grinding tobacco. The large headdress is that of a senior Chokwe chief. This is a superb carving with a typical Chokwe treatment of the figure stance and face features. This figure was obviously cared for and well used as the brown patina and the softening of edges indicate. Gabon African 33 Inches Additional ... moreInformation: This finely proportioned male figure is carved in a northern Fang sculptural style with a noticeable influence of Cameroon carving. Transitional cultural contact in the heavily forested border region between present day Gabon and Cameroon often produced sculptural forms that are a hybrid as well as locally defined and difficult to categorize to any one single group such as the Bamileke in Cameroon or the Fang or Kota of Gabon. Though similar in their forms Fang Ancestor figures fall into a number of subtly differentiated sub-styles that stretch from their core area in Gabon to southern Cameroon. A bark container known as a byeri was normally associated to Fang figures and would hold the bones of an ancestor that were venerated during annual ceremonies at which the ancestors were present in the form of the sculptures. Each lineage's ancestors were located in family shrines where memorials or reliquary boxes known as byeri. Containing their bones were under the care of an elder known as the Esa. The present standing figure was not attached to a a byeri reliquary container. But it most probably was used as an ancestor figure during Byeri rituals.When not in

Up for bids is a statue. Figurine, of a well dressed black man, in a sitting position, in good to very good used. Pre-owned condition. It says on the small label under his rear.Albert, Price Products, has a 3 inside of a diamond shape. Is from Bellmawr, NJ, is made in Taiwan, is dated 1990 by A.E.P. Inc. There is a hole on the bottom of the figurine. See pics( is near his knees underneath) and I am not sure what was there originally. It appears to be made of ceramic( clay/pottery) and does not appear to have any flaws.no cracks.Chips.etc. Displays nicely! A great African American piece of Americana. african Item: Ijo Figure Man Smoking a Calabash Pipe Size: 34 x 9 x 8 cm Medium: Timber Carving Origin: Nigeria(see ethnographical notes below) Numbering 200.000 to 350,000, the Ijo people live mainly in the creeks and mangrove swamps of the Niger Delta area. Being fishermen and traders they depend upon the water for food and communication. The Ijo are divided into two groups: the Kalabari-Ijo. East of the Nun River, and the western or central Ijo, who live to the west and northwest of this river. The art of both groups is characterized by a schematized approach, whereby most works of the central Ijo evince a higher degree of stylization and abstraction than those done in the Kalabari regional style. Yet also found in the western area are more realistic masks in the form of fish or animals. Which are worn on the forehead. However, the best ... moreknown forehead masks of the central Ijo, which embody water spirits(owuamapu) contain depictions of human heads built up of geometric shapes and combined with zoomorphic or abstract elements. Besides ancestors and deceased local heroes. Water spirits play an important role in the religious ideas of the Ijo.
