Hollow Wood Cells Because of the misunderstanding regarding hollow wood cells. A brief explanation is needed. Any person dating carvings has many criteria to determine age. The breakdown of the wood cells is an important aspect of age determination. The strength of the wood is the outer edge of cells. The cell center(like bone marrow) is the passageway that feeds the wood. This center lacks strength as it is softer then the cell walls, thus it disintegrates more quickly. Laboratories determine the progress of the cell center decay to determine the wood age. This varies some by the tree variety also the location of the carving must be considered. It is difficult if not impossible to find a 300 year old carving in the tropics as humidity speeds destruction. Also wood eating insects are a big problem. Many of the Dogon areas are in the dessert above the insect line. Pieces can and are stored above the insect line for many centuries in this very dry climate. Crack in one side of head and face, Additional Information: This well used sculpture is out of the ordinary when measured to the mainstream of Dogon art. There is no doubt as to its origin among the Dogon however is not illustrated in the literature and due to its unique seated angular shape and its bisexual character. It is unusual and exceptional. Among the Dogon of the Bandiagara escarpment near the Niger River in Mali, art and mythology are often the same, sharing visual images whether carved or spoken of during their rituals. A carving such as this old example of a seated figure representing either an ancestor or primordial being is kept in the lineage elderâs house and is used during annual rites that took place during the winter solstice known as âgoruâ. The figure has a manâs beard and a womanâs breasts depicting a being that is in keeping with Dogon creation myths in which tell that beings were both male and female at one time. The head and headdress are particularly interesting. The sharply carved arms and legs and the shaping of the head and the mass of the upper chest makes this the work of a master carver of some skill. From the modern day Republic of the Congo down through northern Angola. Known for their many art forms, as well as filed, sharpened teeth among Kongo women, the Kongo are a large and diverse ethnic group, consisting of a number of smaller subgroups. Art and sculpture is made for a wide variety of reasons among these people. Unique to the Kongo's region are the'nkisi, carvings considered extremely powerful by the people, and even by British colonialists who ordered them destroyed when found, fearing that they could be an effective resistance to the colonization of Africa. These"fetishes" are adorned with nails, or blades of metal, and are the only figures in African art embellished in this way. Nkisis aside, however, the Kongo produce many different styles of art, each of which have gained substantial attention and notoriety from collectors. The maternity figure itself is an extremely important form of art produced throughout much of the African continent. And a form of this figure can be found in the majority of art producing ethnic groups. Some are rendered as part animal, some strictly human. Some are produced as clear representations, some are highly abstract. They are carved from wood and cast in metal. To the African woman, motherhood is the single most important role in life. This beautiful feminine maternity figure displays traditional Kongo styling. Especially in the facial features. The woman is seated cross-legged, cradling her infant gently above her lap. Striking, Hand-Carved African Ebony Figure from Kenya , Emerging from Rough Bark
Hand-carved in Kenya in 1970. This striking, primitive Ebony Figure measures 15 3/4" high. 1 1/2" wide, and 2" front-to-back at it's deepest point. Noteworthy is that the figure"emerges" from the rough bark of the tree, which remains on the back, contrasting handsomely with the smooth sheen of the figure itself. African ebony is an extremely dense wood. So this piece is quite substantial- weighing approximately 1.5 lbs. Stunningly handsome and in excellent condition. A unique and one of a kind piece of art. There will not be another exactly the same. The doll does lean a good bit to one side. The beaded hem around the bottom edge of the clothing has pulled away a bit in spots all around. There are a few small holes in the material on the bottom of the feet. The for k and spoon are not quite 14" in leng th. The knif e is just over 10" The fi gures are dee ply carved a nd are quite distinctive. The knife appe ars to be a wom an while the other t wo are ma le. A ll three have a silve r like twist form ing neck r ings. These are vintage and have a wonderful mellowed look. According to my research, extended families among the Fon people of Benin would own numerous alters which would be kept in a small building in the courtyard of the family house and be tended to by the eldest woman in the family. In the past there would be an Asen for each ancestor serving as a link between the living and the dead. Offerings and recognition would be offered throughout the year.The figures on the top of the staff represent different people and reflect their status, and what each achieved during their life in the family and community.
