Additional Information: This well carved figure of a woman is beautify carved with a subtle expression and composed stance with short straight legs. This is a typical Tabwa figure and would stand dramatically in a collection. Tabwa figures represent ancestors who were to assist in daily activities and during the hunt. Tabwa art is both a symbol and an aesthetic statement as the figures are often elaborately scarified in a fashion known among them until the middle of the twentieth century. The distinctive facial scarification consisting of a number of lines along the sides of the face and along the forehead and abdomen were the means whereby Tabwa identified themselves to localities and social status. They are also a high form of body art or ornamentation. Elaborate and attractive patterns and designs were worked into the skin according to the Tabwa concept of kulemba that reflect aesthetics. Loosely connected agrarian group with shared cultural traits but diverse origins who live in north-central Tanzania. It was on the cost that they were given the name Nyamwezi, meaning people of the west(sometimes translated as people of the moon, because the new moon is visible only as it sets in the west) Ancestors and chiefs have been of considerable importance in the belief system and socio-political structure of the Nyamwezi, and consequently most of their art relates to these themes. Chokwe figurative art includes a considerable series of ancestor figures. For sale is a wooden grave figure collected from the village of Konso in 1967. The Konso carve simple. Elongated figures as part of sculptural groupings honoring the memory of prominent men. The groupings may include representations of the deceased, his wife, his defeated enemies, and even animals that he killed. This figure is extremely rare given that East Africa produced far less art than West Africa. This figure is carved from wood and measures 10.5 inches tall and 3.5 inches wide. This is a interesting Ashanti Akuaba fertility doll or figure from Ghana, Africa. It has brass and bead inlays and was made in the mid-20th century. What is interesting is the wasp inlay in beads to the forehead. Which I don't know its meaning.Blue. White, black and green bead inlays are around the eyes. The figure is sitting on a chair in the African style. Women would wear these hoping it would help them have a baby. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents. And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Chips, and insect damage, hole, cracks and chip in the back, too, Additional Information: Wooden ... morefigures from the Guro of Ivory Coast are known generically as mi iri ne or"small wooden people" They are not used for ancestor worship but they are part of ensembles dedicated to protective spirits known as zuzu. However not every shrine has one of these figures. Figures are made and placed in close proximity to a shrine only after a diviner determines that it is needed. Shrines are composed of different objects and materials that might include pots filled with various'magical' materials. Remains of offerings, eggs and cola nuts. The figures are said to be the messengers of the protective spirits residing in the shrine. This standing female mi ir ne is a good example of a late style of carving based upon earlier traditional examples. The figure is dramatically carved with an expressionistically exaggerated body with her elongated neck, pendulous breasts and navel. She misses the complex body markings- scarification patterns usually found on abdomen, back, forehead, neck and legs of such figures. To complete this projection of a mature Guro woman her complex coiffure is prominently carved. Though a mid 20th century example of earlier Guro style carving this

RARE AFRICAN ATIE, ATTIE, ATTYE, EBRIE FEMALE FIGURE IVORY COAST, COTE D'IVOIRE
This fine Atie( Attye) figure contains many of the physical ideals admired and sought after in African womanhood. I.e. a tall elongated torso, a serene“unreadable” face with downcast eyes, muscular arms and legs denoting strength and pointed breasts signaling fertility. The carving’s elegant neck is exaggeratedly long and is decorated with raised scarification. A permanent body adornment which is also present in other parts of the statue’s body such as its back. The imposing hairstyle. Carefully coiffed in raised masses and the protruding navel are additional noteworthy elements which add to this statue’s uniqueness. The Atie people live in the Lagoon Area of the Ivory Coast. Producing carvings which are stylistically influenced by the neighboring Baule and Akan tribes. This carving has an overall weathered greyish-brown patina with some ... moreencrustation especially in the recessed areas of the hair and scarification. Both feet have worn off at the ankles from being set on the exposed ground over the years. This carving is very stable. H = 12” excluding base. Wooden base is included in this auction.
