THESE GOLD WEIGHTS AND SCALE PAN ARE PIECES OF ETHNOGRAPHIC ART. CRAFTED IN THE LOST WAX PROCESS AND COLLECTED MID-CENTURY BY A PEACE CORPS EMPLOYEE. ... moreTHE LARGE DISC IS THE PAN FOR THE BALANCE SCALE USED TO WEIGH GOLD DUST. DOMESTIC SHIPPING IS INCLUDED IN THE SALE PRICE. I WILL COMBINE ITEMS AND REFUND ANY EXCESS SHIPPING FEES FOR INTERNATIONAL BUYERS. Akan goldweights were used as a measuring system by the Akan people of West Africa. Particularly for weighing gold dust which was currency until replaced by paper money and coins. They are referred to locally as mrammou and the weights are made of brass and not gold. Used to weigh gold and merchandise. At first glance the goldweights look like miniature models of everyday objects. Based on the Islamic ounce. Each weight had a known measurement. This provided merchants with secure and fair-trade arrangements with one another. The status of a man increased significantly if he owned a complete set of weights. Complete small sets of weights were gifts to newly wedded men. This insured that he would be able to enter the merchant trade respectably and successfully. Beyond their practical application, the weights are miniature representations of West African culture items such as adinkra symbols. Plants, animals and people. Meanings behind the weights Scholars use the weights. And the oral traditions behind the weights, to understand aspects of Akan culture that otherwise may have been lost. The weights represent stories. Riddles, and code of conducts that helped guide Akan peoples in the ways they live their lives. Central to Akan culture is the concern for equality and justice; it is rich in oral histories on this subject. Many weights symbolize significant and well-known stories. The weights were part of the Akan’s cultural reinforcement, expressing personal behavior codes, beliefs, and values in a medium that was assembled by many people. From Wikipedia. KWADJA/MFUNTE/MAMBILA CURRENCY HIDE#974 Tribe: Kwadja/Mfunte/Mambila. Country: Nigeria/Cameroon. Material: Iron. Size: 27.5" 69.9 cm) Tall. Item: ... more974 Condition: Good. The Kwadja of the northern sector of the Nkambe Division of West Cameroon are a blacksmith group of cardinal importance. They produce a wide array of iron products and in the past were responsible for the manufacture of these iron plates shared like stretched hides. Which were used through the western grasslands of Cameroon as a medium of exchange. Such Kwadja plates, were commonly found in the 1930s and 1940s among all Kaka peoples of the Upper Donga Valley and were also utilized by the Mambila, who resided on the plateau just north of the Donga River. The Mambila. Anxious to obtain this valuable currency, willingly traded salt, beads, and imported tobacco(the last coming from Nigeria via the Hausa routes originating along the Benue River) Despite the increasing popularity and availability of British currency in the Nkambe district in the 1950s, the Kwadja plates were still utilized and highly prized. Gebauer relates that during this period the headmaster of the Baptist Mission School at Mbem was able to purchase three times as much food for his students in the local markets by using the plates rather than the British currency. by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! Also, the Lobi encounter numerous serpents, including the Bites viper and the Boa Constrictor. To protect them from the dangers that the snakes represent forged iron snakes were either worn on their person or placed on personal altars. In addition to examples such as this serpent that probably served as an altar object, women will attach smaller sinuous, flat-modeled images of serpents to the sides of their legs just above the ankle reaching up the leg close to the knee. Generally placed on the outer side of the leg they may often be on the inside of the leg or both sides as well. The bodies will be displayed with a sinuous set of curves as though the snakes were moving through the grass. In many cases, the heads are simply defined as a triangular shape with the mouth possibly noted with a thin line beaten into the side of the face. The tails are depicted by a tapering form and the body has the usual undulated snake form

QUEEN MANILLA INGOT CURRENCY NIGERIA #2349 ~ For African Art Gallery
QUEEN MANILLA INGOT CURRENCY NIGERIA#2349 Tribe: Various. Country: Nigeria. Material: Metal. Size:10" 25.4 cm) wide x 8.25" 21cm) high. Item: 2349. Condition: Good. Provenance: Ex James E Adkins Estate Collection(Florida. USA) The most common form of metal currency in West Africa was the manilla. A rod with flared ends and bent into a"bracelet" form. The name manilla is said to derive from the Spanish for bracelet'manilla' or the Portuguese for'hand-ring' Most manillas used as currency in Nigeria and Ghana were in the form of copper or brass anklets and bracelets. Usually made from a copper alloy. Forms like these were recognized and used as currency for transactions from the end of the 15th to the mid-20th century. The smaller ones were manufactured in England or France and, like trade beads, were used ... morefor trade, including the slave trade, with Africa and ended up there. Larger queen and king(like this one) manillas were more likely to have been forged in Africa and were believed to have been used by the nobility as a store of wealth and to settle transactions for significant purchases such as land. Slaves and brides. The metal content varies from copper to brass. But many were mixed with lead and even iron. There are in addition variations in size, form and quality. The Africans valued them by their ring when struck. The use of manilla currency in West Africa lasted until the second world war by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! The smaller ones were manufactured in England or France and, like trade beads, were ... moreused for trade, including the slave trade, with Africa and ended up there. Mumuye Forged Iron Currency Nigeria African SALE Was $90
Title, Iron Currency, Type of Object, Weapon/Currency, Country of Origin, Northern Nigeria, People, Mumuye, Materials, Iron, Approximate Age, 20th century, Dimensions, 15.25 inches H. x 1.75 inches, Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, Rusted surface/some oxidation, Additional Information: A forged iron currency from the Mumuye people who live in Nigeria and along the border with Cameroon. This currency has a diamond-like design in the middle and narrow bars in both ends. These curious currency pieces are thought to originate in a remote part of Northern Nigeria. A confluence of obscure. Small cultures have lived in this area since the Fulani expansions of the 17th and 18th centuries. Among them are the Mumuye, Chamba, Jukun, Montol, Fulani, and Goemai. Though these metal currencies can be traced to the area, it is not known for sure who ... moreproduced them. Despite the fact that they were used by the Mumuye as currency on special occasions, most likely in bridal negotiations. The arts of Nigeria are among the strangest and most fascinating in all of Africa. The high degree of abstraction used on most metal objects has made them popular with collectors. Though most texts mention the peoples living in the area, there is little firm scholarship about them. 71638* All content. Old Bobo African Bronze Anklet Currency Chevillière Burkina Faso
Old Bobo Bronze Anklet Chevillière Currency Amulet An old tribally used Bobo bronze amulet anklet or chevillière. Traditional chevillières are worn by women but it is also thought by some scholars that men may also wear them. Especially the larger and heavier anklets. Created using the lost wax method that involves creating a model in beeswax. Once completed. Wax rods are attached to it and the entire model is encased in layers of fine clay. The structure is heated and the melted wax runs out through the channels of wax rods; molten metal is poured into the mold- the mold is broken and the piece has been created, resulting in a unique and original piece. This elegantly shaped chevillière is adorned on either side by applied motifs. Please see similar examples in André Blandin’s: Bronzes et autres Alliages(2000) p. ... more47.
