This type of copper or bronze bracelet and currency were first cast in the elongated form and then beaten into the bracelet shape. After being cast in ... morethe lost wax technique designs were worked onto the surface with a steel chisel. The main function of these bracelets was decorative however they retained value by the very nature of the material they were made of as copper alloy could be recast into other forms. They thus were valued as currency as well as decoration. This bracelet is thought to be well over 200 years. It measures 5" across and 9"tall and 16" around at largest point. The design work is truly beautiful and the slight oxidation adds to the charm and statement of age. Bracelets such as this have been found in various parts of Zaire. The weight is nine pounds. Rough on the interior from the initial pressing and smooth as silk on the exterior. Truly elegant. Makes a wonderful piece of sculpture and can be held by a stand or it stands by itself on end or on its side.

In addition to examples such as this serpent that probably served as an altar object, women will attach smaller sinuous, flat-modeled images of serpents to the sides of their legs just above the ankle reaching up the leg close to the knee. Generally placed on the outer side of the leg they may often be on the inside of the leg or both sides as well. The bodies will be displayed with a sinuous set of curves as though the snakes were moving through the grass. In many cases, the heads are simply defined as a triangular shape with the mouth possibly noted with a thin line beaten into the side of the face. The Kwadja of the northern sector of the Nkambe Division of West Cameroon are a blacksmith group of cardinal importance. They produce a wide array of iron products and in the past were responsible for the manufacture of these iron plates shared like stretched hides. Which were used through the western grasslands of Cameroon as a medium of exchange. Such Kwadja plates, were commonly found in the 1930s and 1940s among all Kaka peoples of the Upper Donga Valley and were also utilized by the Mambila, who resided on the plateau just north of the Donga River. The Mambila. Anxious to obtain this valuable currency, willingly traded salt, beads, and imported tobacco(the last coming from Nigeria via the Hausa routes originating along the Benue River) Despite the increasing popularity and availability of British currency in the Nkambe district in the 1950s, the Kwadja plates were still utilized and highly prized. Gebauer relates that during this period the headmaster of the Baptist Mission School at Mbem was able to purchase three times as much food for his students in the local markets by using the plates rather than the British currency. by adding my eBay Store to your Favorites Check out my! Antique African Hand-Forged Iron Snake Currency/Lobi, Burkina Faso/18"
Antique hand forged iron snake sculpture. Originally made by Burkina Faso by Lobi backsmiths, and used as currency in Africa. 18" L with a nice patina. Showing age and some rust. Item came from the very large estate of African art that belonged to a long time Santa Fe collector and dealer who bought many of his things in the 1960's and 1970's when he had a gallery in Santa Fe. Much of what I bought was very old and many things rare. Please watch my store as I list more metal things I bought. Including sculptures, sword, knives, weapons and currency items. I will also be listing older trade beads and pygmy bark cloth drawings I was able to buy as well. gsrx_vers_486(GS 6.5.1(486)

TEXTILE AFRICAN KUBA RAFFIA CLOTH KASSAI CURRENCY BUTALA DR CONGO ZAIRE ETHNIX
AFRICAN RAFFIA KUBA GRASS CLOTH KASSAI VELVET PREMIUM BUTALA Type of Object: KUBA CLOTH"Butala" Premium Quality. Ethnic Group: KUBA. Country of Origin: DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC of CONGO. Materials: RAFFIA. NATURAL DYE. Approximate Age: 30+ years. Dimensions: 20" x 16" Weight: 7 ounces. Overall Condition: Used. EXCELLENT. Additional Information: Kuba cloth is the embroidered and appliquéd fabric of the Kuba people from DR of Congo and is amongst the best-known textile of the ancient African tradition of raffia cloth weaving. Its geometric art forms have been the source of inspiration for artists such as Picasso. Klee and Matisse who respectively owned extensive collections. Kuba textile art is created from single panels of cloth embroidered with dyed raffia thread and is cut to create a plush pile cloth. These panels are ... morenot worn but displayed, and serve as currency and markers of prestige. This is one such prestige panel. Like almost all so-called Kasai"velvets" the overall composition is asymmetrical and irregular and no two panels are identical. We grade the panels in two qualitative categories: 1) A looser. Flatter“Chacho” Raffia cloth(panel flat-weave and cut-pile embroidery, natural dyes) and 2) the“Butala” Premium Quality Raffia cloth which is thicker and more plush(panel flat-weave and cut-pile embroidery, natural dyes) Composed of a series of interlocking knotted designs in tan and black. The visual complexity and geometrical structure make these fabrics a favorite. The variation of compositions are staggering! In Kuba culture, the cloth also forms an important part of funeral rites. High quality, specific patterned raffia dress is key to being recognized by clan ancestors. These designs are handed down from generation to generation and it is the strength of this tradition that has kept the skills of making Kuba cloth alive. Kuba cloth at times also play a role in wedding ceremonies offered as gifts or currency. Kuba cloth technique involves first weaving a plain square of ra

Probably in Cross River region. The brass or copper-alloy works are in fact stylistically located to a shrine and town rather than to single ethnic group. Numbers of copper-alloy bracelets, manilas, torques, figures and animal skulls have been found and in the past have been generally attributed to the “Lower Niger Bronze Industry”, after this original appellation by W. Fagg(1963) Bracelet forms such as this preceded European contact. As noted by Peek and Nicklin(2002:54) Portuguese traders developed their copper-alloy manilla forms after bracelet prototypes found at Obolo, a shrine and burial place for the Obolo or Andoni people. Vintage Antique Cameroon Bamoun Tikar? Bronze Currency Bracelet Tribal African
The woman that I acquired this bracelet from said that she acquired it second hand and she did not know anything about. I did not know much about it either other than it looked like an old tribal piece. After doing some research. I am pretty sure that it is a bronze currency bracelet from Africa. To my eye, it looks most like the currency bracelets made by the Bamoun-Tikar people in Cameroon. It looks vintage or antique to me with a nice dark patina. I think that the green or verdigris might be applied. I leave it to the buyer to determine exactly how old it is and where it is from. The overall diameter is about 4 1/2 to 4 3/4 inches. At its widest. It is about 3 3/4 inches wide. It weighs close to 1 pound 8 ounces. The gap between the open ends measures slightly less than 1 1/8 inches. The inside diameter measured from one side to the other ... moreis slightly over 2 1/4 inches. So your wrist should be narrower than that for it to be comfortably worn. The condition is much like you see it in my photos. It is generally in excellent condition with patina or tarnish and what looks like verdigris. There are irregularities that are expected of hand made items. Otherwise. There is no damage. My photos should give you a good idea of its general condition. I guarantee this bracelet to be as described and represented by my photos. The photos are part of the description. Those paying with Paypal must have a confirmed address registered with Paypal. If you pay with Paypal. I will ship only to your confirmed address. I like to leave feedback after I know that the item has arrived and that the buyer is satisfied. I reserve the right to cancel any bids without explanation. Please email me with any questions or suggestions. I do not ship on weekends. I might not be available to answer email on weekends. Seven photos should load with this listing.

Approximately 8-14 inches each. The Kissi of Western Guinea and Sierra Leone used these strangely shaped metal pieces as currency for more than a hundred years. Kissi and Toma peoples; Guinea. Sierra Leone, and Liberia, West Africa) Apparently, the shape came about at least in part because it was virtually impossible to"shave" or alter the amount of metal in them without the tampering becoming immediately obvious. Larger"denominations" were made by twisting several ... morepieces together and securing with leather strips. If one of them became legitimately broken, its value could only be restored in a special ceremony conducted by a shaman. Therefore, it was said to have a"soul. In earlier times, marriages among the Gbande were confirmed with a kissi penny. Once part of the bride price had been paid, the groom placed a kissi penny on his bride's head and said"THIS IS MY WIFE. No question ask* PLEASE ADD ME TO YOUR FAVORITES LIST* Hi! My name is Elena. I’m collecting ancient beads from 1979. Most of my beads were found in Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. To be precise they were found between Mary city(Turkmenistan) and Samarkand(Uzbekistan) That area in past was called Bactria. Nowadays there are a lot of ruins older than 2000 years in this region. I like ancient beads very much and want that other collectors will be able to obtain them without paying a lot of money. That is why my prices are very modest. I lived in Asgabat city(the ... morecapital of Turkmenistan) over 30 years. About 15 km from Asgabat there is Nisa– former residence of Alexander the Great. And capital of Parthia. In most cases the ancient beads. Not only played the role of jewelry but also the status of the person wearing them. You were able to tell the social status of an individual based on the beads they were wearing, while other used these beads as talismans protecting themselves against bad luck and the evil eye. Certain beads that have zigzagging lines are supposed to confuse the evil eye which would get lost in these lines. Beads that have the image of an eye try to just absorb the evil energy, and thus protect the person who is wearing them. Periodically the beads would be washed in salt water, because it is believe the salt water kills the negative energy. The image of the eye was sometimes very abstract and was more like an image of a flower, however sometimes the beads would correctly reflect the wearers eyes, including the color. Parthia kingdom. African tribal currency Bamana iron oil lamp or candle holder ethnographic art
This is a multi-armed lamp with a cup to hold oil at the front. Oil known as tulu. Made from the Karite tree nut was burned in the cups to produce a dark, smoky light that was as much a light for ritual purposes as for illumination. Lamps such as this would serve in the house but also would provide light, real and ritual, for masks when they danced at night. The small forged bird at the top is praising God with either a Muslem position of prayer or a traditionalist animist's gesture of prayer. The arms of the lamp repeat this gesture. Small spoons hanging by chains were used to adjust the wick, made of twisted cotton burning in the Karite oil. This lamp with it's standardized forms is an example of the change of style in Bamana lamps as other forms of iron material became available and in this instance the arms and support of the ... morelamp is riveted together rather than fully forged. Yet it must be noted that the figure has been forged and hammered to an abstract figure in the profile. It measures 12" in height and 5" in width.

Damage/Repair, Rusty surface. Cracks, chips and dents, Additional Information: The wonderful variety of metal objects found in Africa is essentially a ... morefunction of the need to trade and store wealth not as one might assume. For weapons. These carefully-forged pieces were used for large, though infrequent, purchases of land or animals, and the transfer of wealth at major events such as births and initiations. The most commonplace use of iron and other metal objects was as"brideprice, the compensation of a family for the loss of a daughter to marriage. Most of these"currencies" were developed alongside traditional metal objects such as blades, tools, bracelets and anklets. While some pieces continued to be used for work or decorative purposes, most evolved into"pure" money, unusable except as objects recognized, prized and accepted widely as payment. This rare iron forged money is from the Mambila, an ethnic group from Cameroon, a very famous money used in local transactions. The Mambila had to trade this kind of iron currency from the Kwadja, a blacksmithing group according to Marc Ginzberg, 2000, p.192. Later on. Colonialism put new western currencies oon the market and ends the use of local currencies which resulted in the scattered nature of the iron currencies such as this. A similar currency is attr
